I have a plan. It involves shopping. I'm off work early today. I've planned my route: First the gaming store, then the knitting store, and then - maybe - home. Theoretically, anyway. I might throw in a Goodwill stop or two in there. Or time to sit somewhere and work on space vampires fic. I'm doing what I hope are final edits on my prequel short story. Or I might be responsible and do some class reading. My co-worker laughed at me for complaining that the multiple choice weekly quizzes in my Criminal Justice class are too easy. But she also doesn't know who Hermione Granger is. I'm vaguely appalled, but then I called Mr. Havoc to explain that I was stopping at the gaming store that sold Reaper minis, and he reminded me that I'm such a nerd I have a favorite brand of miniature figurines. So there you go. Though I would like to point out that Reaper has some more realistic female figs in with the babetastic ones. So it's feminist gaming. Sort of. But at least I can have a mini that looks like an actual fighter when I'm gaming. This entry has been cross-posted to Dreamwidth ( comments). Comments are welcome on either post. |

Oh, Amazon. Kindle Worlds = FanLib, right? I've seen it come up several times on Dreamwidth (haven't checked LJ yet), and I'm sure it's all over Twitter and Tumblr. But. John Scalzi's breakdown of the Kindle Worlds licensed fanfic thing, and why it's not a good deal for fanfic writers. You can check out Amazon's info on the subject. I notice that they say that there are "content guidelines" for each fandom, but they don't link to the guidelines for the three fandoms that they've licensed. I wonder if they plan on forbidding f/f and m/m in the extremly heterocentric Vampire Diaries universe, for example. I mean, the majority of the show is built around that annoying love triangle. (You may love it! Feel free to! I don't actually hate it, but I am frustrated by how it's taken over so much of the plot.) Also, I notice that there are no editing requirements, which. I am not going to pay for unedited drivel, okay? At least with free fanfic, I can back-button hard and fast if I uncover bad writing (or spelling and grammar). Maybe that's contained under the "we don't accept books that provide a poor customer experience" clause? They reserve the right to decide what constitutes that, after all. Honestly, if you want to pay to read Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, or Pretty Little Liars fanfic, I'm sure you can find plenty of fans who would take your money. (I mean, hell, I would.) Oh, Amazon. I do hope this gets shut down hard. I just don't see this working out well for the writers you sucker into it. I wonder if SFWA is going to get involved? ETA: fandom_lounge has also gotten in on the commentary about this. This entry has been cross-posted to Dreamwidth ( comments). Comments are welcome on either post. |

Iron Man 3: The start of my Pepper Potts thoughts. First off, I wish that people on the ao3 would stop tagging their Marvel comicsverse stories with Avengers (2012), Iron Man - Movies, or Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because I do not want to ( spoilers for Extremis storyline in comics ) I would much rather read about ( spoilers for Extremis storyline in Iron Man 3 )More Pepper feels later. But after hunting down Pepper fics set post Iron Man 3, I'm cranky about fandom. (I know, this is a shock.) Thanks to any author out there who writes Pepper and Natasha friendship (or shipping, yes please), though. This entry has been cross-posted to Dreamwidth ( comments). Still alive over here... One of the most depressing things I've encountered recently was a review for ABP that described it as "abandoned". Its not, although i understand why people would think so. Bug and I talk about it often, and try writing in fits and spurts. Those that have followed us closest might remember we've been dealing with things like both of us having pain issues (joint disease for me, while Bug was diagnosed with MS a couple yrs ago). So there's the stress and anxiety and depression with that. About 2.5 yrs ago we moved to our first house we bought. I know there is lot sof stuff between then and now, but to be honest, I can't remember. Heck, if you asked me to list our stressors just inthe past month, I'd not remember half of them, let alone put them in chronological order. Its just like before we have finished with stressor A, stressor B hits us. We finally take care of A, only to have C hit us, before we are finished with B, and so on. I'll have to write about the current shit we'll dealing with for anyone who is interested, but not now as i have to get to bed very soon and that needs to be flocked anyway. Anyway, back to ABP... For a while, I had been resolving to get the current book finished... and since is was so long since an update, i figured that since people would likely need to re-read to remember WTF was going on, I might aw well just make it one big update - like "update: book finished!" yeah, that worked well, didn't it? I mean, just give myself an impossibly big task, with no positive feedback as I went along, while life continues to throw shit at me... why i thought that was a good idea, again, i don't know. So, new idea! i'm going to go back to posting updates- even if just a few pages at a time. I can't promise they will be regular, but I should actually make some progress instead of just falling into despair at my ongoing failure, and hopefully prevent any further encounters of "warning: abandoned fic". Chicago Gamer Types (Or Potential Gamers!) If you're interested in playing Changeling: The Lost, our game is starting up in about three weeks, and you could get in on the ground floor of what's shaping up to be a fascinating story. My character, Miriam Graves, is part of the Spring Court, and lives in Chicago as an escapee from the Thousand Petty Fiefdoms, an area of Arcadia that's linked to Chicago's ethnic communities. You can learn more about Changeling as a game, and the setting of this specific game, by going to Chicago Changeling: The Fifth Star. If you're new to gaming, you won't be alone. We have a playwright who hasn't roleplayed ever in her life, but she has a brilliant idea for a character and I'm excited to see what she comes up with. In addition, if you're new to gaming, you won't have to build your character. The Storytellers (the people running the game) have offered to build characters for the people who are new to either CtL or to gaming. The focus is more on roleplay (in other words, interactive worldbuilding and character development in an improv theater sort of format) and less on the mechanics of the rules. If you check out the webpage I linked and you're interested in playing, I would love to have a character with connections to yours. You could email me (address is in the profile), or you could email the Storytellers at chicagochangelingST(@)googlegroups.com and let them know what you're interested in. You don't have to be Spring Court, but we do have all the best parties. This entry has been cross-posted to Dreamwidth ( comments). Comments are welcome on either post. |
