Who: OPEN THREAD
What: Beginner's Night @ Wizarding Chess Championships
Where: The Roost, Finnigan's
When: Thursday evening
Rating: SFW

Instead of the usual large chessboard taking up the floor of The Roost, Seamus had had Dominic set up several smaller ones - with room around the outside for the more usual kind of tabletop boards and chairs. It was a spur of the moment to do something different for the evening and Seamus honestly didn't know what kind of a crowd to expect.

After setting up his own personal chessboard in a corner table - and heavily warding it against theft or deliberate damage, because that thing was one of Seamus's few treasured possessions - Seamus moved to stand by one of the small standing chess sets. He bent to nudge a pawn, about level with his knee, back into place and then walked around to stand behind the black pieces. These were not wizarding chess pieces, really. Dominic had said that much transfiguration was impossible on such short notice, so they were merely chess pieces which could be levitated into position, they would not respond to commands.

He watched as people began to filter in, waving at his chess regulars and hoping at least a few beginners would show up for them to teach. If not, they could always have their own little tournament.

Pandora slipped in with the familiar feeling of nerves somewhere deep inside. She hated it, honestly; she'd never been like this when she was younger. But so much had happened since then. She put a smile on her face, tugged her robe sleeve down and did a mild sticking charm to it, and went on in.

She glanced around and realized she'd missed playing. She wandered around for a moment before stopping at a complete chess board. She tilted her head at Seamus and smiled, wondering if he'd recognize her and hoping not. "Up for a game?" she asked.

Seamus looked up to find a customer approaching him and smiling. He was pretty sure he'd seen her at the pub before, but couldn't recall her name. The one small downside of his business thriving was that he simply couldn't remember and recognise every single customer anymore like he'd been able to in the early days. She looked about his age, though, so they might well have been at school together too. Well, it would come to him, or she'd tell him. Either way.

"Always," he answered easily. "Are you a beginner, or should I be preparing to get thrashed?" Seamus was pretty good on the chess board, but by no means a real master. He won a little more often than he got beaten, but he wasn't at the top of the leaderboard.

"Not a beginner but sorely out of practice," she told him, one side of her mouth rising a little higher than the other in a smile. "I used to be decent, but I've not played in over six months, and haven't played seriously in longer than that." It was true, and though she remembered how it went, it'd be a bit before she got into a good groove. She came in expecting to lose a bit, but that was okay... so long as she learned from it.

"Well, then," Seamus said. "You've come to the right place." He gestured at the white pieces, then considered. "Would you prefer to take this to a smaller board?" If she really was out of practice she might not want to take him on quite so publicly. Though the chess pieces were smaller than normal, there was still a crowd gather that would likely split their attention between matches.

"Let's do a smaller board," she agreed with a slight smile. "I don't want to be utterly humiliated in public if at all possible. I'll someone else have the pleasure of the large set." She followed him to another set and sat down. "Which color do you want?" she asked.

"I'll take black," Seamus answered, turning the board so the white pieces were in front of her. This wasn't his own personal set, just one of the generic ones they'd bought for the club, which meant its temperament could be anything from genially obedient to downright crotchety. "And I think you're vastly overestimating the level of my skill. The only person I've ever utterly humiliated on the chess board is Dean, and he's rubbish." He grinned and gestured for her to start.

Pandora contemplated the board for a moment, though it was hard to gauge unknown pieces. She missed her old set, which had been destroyed in a fit of temper by Bellatrix Lestrange during the war. "Yes, well, you never know," she said before ordering one of her center pawns forward two spaces to open. "And you could be having me on, after all."

Seamus watched her move, pleased to hear that she knew how to order the pieces around. Real beginners often tended to request - which rarely worked. He ordered his own pawn forward immediately afterwards. "I don't think that would be very good for business," he pointed out. "Lull people into a false sense of security and then wallop them at chess? They might not come back." He grinned, then realised she might not know who he was. Not everyone did, after all. "I'm Seamus, by the way, and I know I've seen you around but I don't know your name. Sorry." He smiled his most charming smile, hoping she wouldn't be offended.

"Ah but you'd have won a game of chess,"she said, eyes glinting with amusement. If course hers was very much a Slytherin thought, our perhaps simply someone who knew a strategy when she heard it. "I thought it was you, Seamus. I'm Dora." Not that people at Hogwarts hadn't known her nickname, but it tended to be the safer choice. She took a moment to order her next piece forward. "Your pub is quite nice, I know I've never taken the time to say it, though I do hope the new cook is better than the last."

"Dora," Seamus repeated, trying to commit the name to memory along with her face. Just because he couldn't remember everyone anymore didn't mean he was going to stop trying. "As in Pandora Montgomery? I was talking to you on the journals." He beamed, glad to have made the connection. "Nice to meet you properly."

A few words moved his own piece forward in response, sliding smoothly across the board. He could only hope this was one of the more obedient sets but only time would tell. "Thank you, I quite like it." Which was a huge understatement, Seamus loved his pub, but to say so to people who weren't close friends sounded too arrogant. He shrugged. "I wouldn't have hired him if he was no good, but we'll see if he can keep up."

"Yes, that's me," she said, glancing at him from under her lashes to see if there was a continued reaction attached to her name. Some people knew it right off the bat; some only heard a few things; some were clueless, and that was the nicest though not what happened the most often.

Her next piece slid out, her mind already three moves ahead even as they talked. It was like dueling or a lot of other things she enjoyed. "True, but the previous fellow was a little... unreliable at times." Well, one of them, there were shifts, she knew, but she most often came in later at night or occasionally for lunch.

Countering her move, Seamus was able to take the first piece of the game, watching as one of her pawns was sent flying from the board by his knight. He caught the piece and returned it to the table with a grin equal parts triumphant and sheepish. "Apparently this is one of the overenthusiastic sets," he said by way of apology. "Do you have a set of your own?" He generally encouraged people to bring their own sets with them, if they could, as they made playing much easier.

Seamus vaguely remembered that Pandora had been in Slytherin, but he tried not to let that colour his judgement nowadays. He'd seen too many Slytherin students at the battle who looked every bit as scared as he had felt. "He started out well," Seamus said, defending himself as best as he was able. "He was here for two years and it's only really been the last few months he gave us trouble." Admittedly, it had been quite a lot of trouble all at once... Seamus shook his head, focusing on the fact that he'd fixed the problem - for now. "I'm still looking for a second chef, just to make sure this never happens again. If you know anyone..."

Pandora barked a small, surprised laugh as the pawn went flying off the table. "You don't say," she said, highly amused. She had her bishop slip up into play. "I used to, but I haven't in several years, unfortunately. It's on a list to get at some point, or make, depending. I could probably charm a set myself if I put my mind to it."

She dipped her head in assent. "I can understand that, yeah. Sometimes things just go downhill, unfortunately. A second one would be good, though, that way no one gets burned out and people can have days off without you having to cover them, right?" she said, raising an eyebrow. "I'll ask around, though, see if I hear of anyone looking for work."

"Really?" Seamus asked, immediately interested. He'd been decent enough at Charms in school, but wouldn't have the least idea how to set about making a chess set of his own. "Was it you who posted in the journals about making customised ones?" He vaguely remembered the entry, though he was pretty sure he'd forgotten to comment on it. "I thought about asking for more details, but I'm honestly not sure I'd want to see chessmen with the faces of people I know treated like that." He gestured to the poor sacrificed pawn, wincing as he imagined... No. He decided not to even go there.

He nodded. "Thanks. And yeah, we've always had kitchen assistants and enough employees who can cook that days off has never been a problem - but I still think having two proper chefs would be better."

"No, it wasn't me, but we usually have a set or two on our shelves. I've my Mastery in Charms, so I have the right skill set, but I haven't done chess pieces since my apprenticeship with Master Flitwick, so I'd have to just look up the spells again." Though she wasn't sure she wanted a set charmed by herself. They made decent gifts though.

She ordered another piece forward, her grin sharp as it took one of his pieces, if rather over enthusiastically. "I would agree. Two chefs are better than one, especially long term. That way if something happens you have a built-in back-up."

"Ah." Seamus scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. "Sorry. I didn't expect the journals to take off the way they have, sometimes its hard to keep track of who says what." He was pleased that so many people had gotten on board with his idea, though. It could only mean good things for Finnigan's.

For the next few moves, he was quiet, trying to focus on the game. She wasn't bad - but Seamus had more recent experience and he took several more of her pieces but couldn't quite get her in checkmate. "Exactly," he said, picking up where he'd left off. "Plus, different cooking styles means I can put more things on the menu. Our new chef is from Mexico so I'm hoping we'll be able to change things up a bit."

Pandora smiled at him quickly. "No worries," she assured him. "I'm not the best with names a lot of times, so I understand. But the journals are rather great."

She followed his example, focusing and planning, though she'd been right to say she was rusty. It wasn't quite on point, not like her dueling still generally was. But it was fun, and she could improve again. "Hm, never had much Mexican," she admitted. She'd be on the fence about it until she ate some of it, she supposed.

Seamus grinned. "Thank you. I'm really pleased with how they've worked out, actually." Even if it was mostly Dominic's work, it had been Seamus' idea and he didn't feel bad for taking credit.

"I've had some, mostly since moving here." London was significantly more varied in the kinds of food available than his home town of Greencastle, which had a pub and a fish and chip shop and that was really about it. "It's good. Onions and peppers and a little bit of spice but not too much, usually." Though Seamus supposed years of Dean and his family had lifted Seamus' tolerance for spice above what might be common.

Part of why she liked to use the journals was no one could necessarily see her, and so she could be comfortable and not hide parts of herself.

"I suppose I'll have to give it a try then," she said. "I've eaten quite a few things over the years, so I'm willing to give new things a go." Traveling gave her that opportunity, and she was lucky with that if with not much else.

"And if you don't like it, Romeo still makes all the usual English things," Seamus confirmed. He'd been quite specific about that when he hired Romeo. He was happy to have some Mexican things on the menu, but this was still a pub and not a restaurant, which meant it should have the food people expected from a pub. Plus, Seamus wasn't giving up his Sunday roasts for anything.

With a quiet noise of triumph, Seamus spotted a way he could win - and in three moves had done just that. "Checkmate." He grinned. "You played well, though. A little bit of practice and you'll be back on form."

"Got to have fish and chips," she joked and grinned a bit. "Good to know the pub fare isn't going anywhere. I'd be a sad girl." She faux sniffled.

Pandora looked at the board for a long moment and then sighed. "You're right. Good game," she pronounced, holding out her hand to him over the board. "Thanks for the game, and thanks, I'm hoping to get there. I'm more up on my dueling than my chess lately."

Seamus nodded. "Exactly. Though I know pub fish and chips are no match for real chip-shop fish and chips." No matter what chef he employed, that seemed to be a constant. He presumed it was something to do with the electric deep-fat fryer, or something. Maybe now that Dominic and Zacharias had got the projector working, it was something to look into.

He shook her hand willingly. "Well, I'm not that much help at duelling on a personal level but you know about the duelling club right?"

"They're still great to have." Especially on a day when you really didn't want to attempt anything resembling cooking, and Dora wasn't a great cook. At all. She tended to eat a lot of noodles and eggs and toast when left to her own devices.

"I look in on it sometimes but I've not particpated. I dueled competitively for several years and I can't help but worry that I'd hurt someone on accident." And then get accused of nefarious purposes and yeah she tended to keep to the fringes there.

"Better than nothing, anyway." Seamus looked up as the small crowd around one of the larger chess boards applauded. "I wonder who won." He couldn't make out, among the gathered people, who'd been actually playing.

He stood up. "I think I'll go have a look, if you don't mind. Would you like me to find you someone else to play with?" He thought he could probably find someone nearer her skill level, provide her with more of a challenge.

Cho wasn't much of a wizard chess player, but she liked watching games, so when things had started in The Roost she'd made her way and took a table not far from the ones cleared for playing. She took out a book and settled in with her glass of wine, crossing her legs demurely to wait for the matches to begin.

Being the youngest or Ailfrid’s brood, Killian had always had a special place in Finbar’s heart. Only just out of Hogwarts this summer, he was easily the youngest in the weekly chess club, but that didn’t deter him from showing up every Thursday. With a match tomorrow, Finbar figured that watching Killian play was just the way to go easy tonight.

He looked up just as she walked in, and he could have sworn he had seen her before, though as she walked across the room and took a seat as if it was the most natural thing in the world, he found himself leaning back in his seat, simply for the purpose of watching her. She had just flipped a page, when it hit him where it was he had seen her before, and with a small smirk, he picked up his water and went to her table.

“This seat taken?” he asked as he pulled out a chair and took a seat not too close to her, but still close enough so he could keep an eye on the chess tables. “I have to admit that I hadn’t pecked you for a chess aficionado.”

Cho looked up from her book with barely a nod that he was welcome to the seat. When he spoke again she looked up with an arched eyebrow. She didn't recognize him, though she had a feeling that she should.

"I'm sorry? What might you have pegged me for?" Cho wasn't your average Ravenclaw sterotype - surely she didn't spend all her time in school in the library and never had any inclination to go into Ministry work, but he was old enough seeming that she doubted he'd known her at Hogwarts anyway. "I happen to enjoy watching games of strategy," she said, her voice cool. Her gaze went back to his book after a sip of her Pinot Noir.

Finbar considered that for a moment, his eyes still on the woman and his lips slightly pursed in thought. “I’m not sure,” he finally admitted, though there was an ease to that admission, because finding out what he had been thinking, albeit wrongfully, about her, was a puzzle he was looking forward to solving. “But I know that it’s a pleasant surprise to see you look even more gorgeous here than at…” he paused for a moment, still piecing the puzzle together. “You were working at the McGinty wedding, weren’t you? That would explain the subtlety to the beige suit you were wearing.”

When he said she was looking gorgeous, her eyebrows shot up even further, in surprise to be sure. When he recalled the wedding, seeing her there, and even her outfit, her surprise heightened.

"I was, I planned the affair," she said with a small, proud smile. "You were a guest, I assume? The Bride or Groom's side?" She set her book down now, interested in what he might have thought about her work. If she remembered well enough, which she usually did, the wedding had been a very large Irish event - family as far as the eye could see on both sides.

"What did you think?" She couldn't help but asking. The fact that she still didn't know this man hadn't crossed her mind since he'd mentioned the wedding.

There. That pride in the woman’s smile, not at all unlike the pride Finbar felt after a good match – not necessarily a won match, but a good match where the team had clicked and played flawlessly – had him nodding slowly. “The bride,” he chuckled, amused and relieved that she at least didn’t assume him the groom. “Maura’s my niece.” He pointed out his nephew – a late teen with a resemblance to Finbar, though of a rather slighter build and height – who was setting up his chess pieces. “That’s her youngest brother, Killian.”

His smile widened with amused acceptance when she asked for his opinion. Briefly his mind flashed back, first to his own wedding, which had been an extravaganza of white and ruby tulle, and then to the more recent and far more personal wedding of his niece. “I think you did a great job of making it both Maura and James’ wedding and make it a celebration them rather than a two-in-one family reunion.” Which in his estimation was no small feat.

She looked over to the young man, "I've watched him play, he's potential," she assessed.

His thoughts on the wedding made her laugh a light laugh, "I find weddings tend to be a celebration of the families these days, rather than the two people stepping into marriage." She shook her head, "My planning company strives to reign that in. You'll find a lot of society brides these days don't want to the old style parties of formality and family tradition, I think it's all going the way of arranged marriages and business deals," she thought out loud. Then, remembering her surroundings, she hoped no potential clients had heard. She was proud of her work, but if the right pureblood came along who thought otherwise, she'd do what the client wanted.

Lifting her glass of wine again she asked before taking a drink, "I'm sorry but, who are you? I know your niece and her husband, and apparently one of their children, but not you. You've interrupted my reading." She indicated the book with her eyes before finally taking the drink of her red. There was something... cocky about him, she thought, but Cho had rarely ever stepped back from a challenge in conversation. So what was this - was he just trying to bother her? Did he just happen to recognize her from the wedding and decide to say hello? That would be odd, she was just 'the help' at her events, after all.

No, none of this made any sense at all to Cho, and so she watched him, waiting for an explanation with an air of near-impatience but a small smile playing on her lips despite herself (he was an extremely good looking man paying attention to her, after all).

“He does,” Finbar agreed, not quite able to keep the pride in his nephew from showing in his slight smile. Killian just needed to rid himself of that authoritarianism that kept him thinking of players older than him as better by default.

Finbar drank from his water, doing his best to keep a straight face as the woman talked. Her planning company? He had somewhat sussed out that she had been working during his niece’s wedding, but that it had been her own company she had been there for, that he hadn’t seen.

Her question had him chuckling. It wasn’t often that people didn’t recognise him, and while that was sometimes mildly annoying, in this case… he found it refreshing. The witch was stunning, obviously smart too and she had her own business, which in Finbar’s estimation set her apart from other women he had met. “Killian’s Maura’s brother,” he corrected her gently as he set his water down and made sure that the condensation that had gathered on the glass had made his fingers wet as he extended his hand to her. “Finbar Quigley,” he introduced himself. “My apologies for interrupting your reading, I just didn’t want to miss the chance to actually meet you now that it was here, Miss..?”

Cho looked him up and down briefly before taking his hand, "Cho Chang. Owner and operator of Charming Parties." She smiled at him now, more genuinely, a little less cynically.

And then she cocked her head, dropping his hand, "Wait a minute, you're the quidditch pro Quigley." She didn't recognize him by face but the name certainly caught her attention. "I apologize, I don't tend to know players by their faces. A Chess fan in your off time, yeah?"

She settled back in her seat, taking up her wine, feeling more comfortable now that she knew his motives - or she figured she did - and knew who he was.

“Pleasure to meet you, Miss Chang,” Finbar smiled back, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. “And again, splendid job on keeping the mastodon of a wedding personal and the bride from going completely spare.” Cho had been gorgeous before, but as the distrust and distance in her smile faded, she was striking.

The cock of her head had his attention shift slightly, ready for whichever salvo she could think of to fire at him. But it wasn’t anything like he had feared, because of course she recognised his name, and fortunately didn’t immediately connect it to Ruby. “Yeah,” he chuckled, not minding her recognition at all. “That would be me, though I think I prefer Finbar, Beater for the Ballycastle Bats,” before he held up a hand and shook his head in response to her apology. “No need for apologies.” For a moment, he considered her question then made a small waving gesture with his hand. “More of a Killian fan, if I’m being completely honest. You play?” Looking up he caught sight of Krum, and sent him a small nod in greeting. He would talk to him later. “Or do you just come here for the peace and quiet?”

When he complimented her work again she felt a small blush warm her cheeks and her smiled grew just a bit. He certainly was a complimentary good looking bloke, that was sure, but she couldn't help but wonder at his interest in the wedding - perhaps he was gay? Maybe he was straight but a metrosexual (was that the muggle word...)?

Laughing lightly - a tinkling sound, she liked to think - she answered, "In my book you'd probably be better known just as a Pro. I'm a Tornados fan from birth.

She thought on her response for a moment, lightly chewing her bottom lip before answering, "If I want piece and quiet, I tend to stay away from the bar, but I do find here in the Roost you can get some good reading in with a nice background noise of the horrible dismemberment of chess pieces," she joked. Lifting her glass she shrugged, "I like Chess, though I'm not very good at it, strategy has always been something I've admired."

She still couldn't quite figure him out, and he didn't seem to be paying much attention to his... Nephew? Cousin? She hadn't been able to keep track as to how they were related, but Killian, either way, despite his saying that was his reason for attending.

Viktor ordered a pint of German ancestry, for English beer wasn't his thing usually, and moved over to the chess area. He'd been playing since he was small, and he was rather good, but he was more than happy to play tutor for an evening to help others. He'd already put Misha to bed (once, he didn't doubt oto much he'd have to do it again), and he was relatively certain he'd be back in time to fold Tsveta under the covers.

He walked around slowly, looking around to see if anyone looked in need of help just yet.

Adrian made his way into the Roost hoping to get someone to bring him up to snuff on Chess; he was pants at it if he was honest and it'd been ages since he and his father had sat down to play. His father, of course, was quite good, but he knew he'd have to visit his parents soon (with Sera due in December of course) and his father would make him sit down for a match.

Seeing a familiar face in the crowd, Adrian brought his stout pint over to Viktor and nodded in hello, "Do you play?" He hadn't known that, though he'd seen Viktor around the Slytherin common room quite a bit during his Sixth year and the Tournament.

Viktor smiled over at the familiar face. He had spent a fair amount of time with the Slytherins of Hogwarts during the Tournament, in part because of the reputation of Durmstrang, which really was exaggerated. Well, and the English really considered so many things Dark that weren't necessarily Dark, but that was beside the point.

"I do," Viktor said easily. "Are you here to learn more?" It never did to assume such things, and Viktor was a polite sort of fellow generally.

Adrian nodded with a self-deprecating smile, "I've got a visit to my parents coming up and I know Father is going to ask me to play with him a while." He shook his head now, "I'm terrible, and have never taken to it, even the basics still allude me."

Looking around he asked, "Did you ever play at Hogwarts? I don't recall seeing you among the Club." Not that Adrian had paid much mind to the Chess Club in school, but he had watched people closely as always, and Viktor was one watch that year.

"Ah yes, I can see vhy you might want more practice," Viktor said. "I can help vith that, I think." Though not as heavy as during his school year's, Viktor's accent was still pronounced when speaking English.

"I did, some, though not vith a club. Karkaroff discouraged getting too involved with too many things, or my focus would not be on the Tournament properly. So I mostly played vith my schoolmates when I had a moment, though I shared a few games," he told him.

Adrian nodded, "Thank you," his eyebrows were raised a bit. Neither he nor Viktor had (at least to his recall) ever been the most social sorts, so the offer to help was a surprise but a welcome one.

"I honestly can't imagine what being in the Tournament must have been like - a single goal for an entire year, and more really if you think of the training," he shook his head but then opted for a lighter topic. "Shall we choose a set, then? I will warn you though I am not being modest when I say I've really nearly no grasp of the game despite my father's trying over the years."

Viktor saw Finbar not too far away and smiled, giving him a small wave. He'd make sure to go talk to him later, after he was done helping out. "I haf been playing for a long time, I told them I would help with Beginner night," he said to the eyebrow raise. "But I like teaching anyvay."

Viktor smiled slightly. "It vas different, but not too far away from Quidditch training," he said. "Just some different things to train toward." He nodded and gestured toward a chess set. "Vat color you prefer? And no worries. Ve start with the very basics, and go from there, no problem."

Lisa had left the book club to the very efficient Mrs. Kettlering, and all but dragged Christopher down the block to Finnigans. She'd heard about the chess night last minute, and while she wasn't a fan Christopher had been something of a fanatic back in San Francisco. He and his grandfather had spent hours at the board, and even joined on-line tournaments. She thought that Wizarding chess might be just the thing to keep him occupied of an evening, but he needed someone with more skill than her to compete against.

She was not, however, expecting the almost life-sized chess boards and pieces. Christopher looked around the room with wide eyes, and then all but shouted, "Wow, this is so cool Mom! Look, it's as big as me!" He ran to one of the boards, and yes he was just about level with the tallest piece.

Remembering just how Wizard chess worked, she pulled him back. Outloud she wondered to no one in particular, "Is there a Healer on duty?" She kept one hand on Christopher's shoulder, and felt him vibrating with excitement. Maybe she should have thought this through a little more.
