Chapter 3: Explanations
Elijah didn’t want to wake up. He knew what was going to be waiting for him if he did. Kevin, standing somewhere nearby, growing more angry the longer Elijah’s eyes remained closed. As soon as his eyes opened, there would be more pain, more pain than Elijah could handle…but just as long as his eyes remained shut, he was safe. That was the thing about Kevin. He wanted Elijah wide awake when he dealt out his beatings. That way there was no way Elijah would escape the pain…as long as Elijah’s eyes stayed closed…he was safe.
Soft voices filtered through the comfortable darkness and a cool hand gently pressed against his head. Strange. Kevin would never be so gentle with him and he most certainly wouldn’t touch his head. Kevin could care less if Elijah was running a fever or not. As long as Elijah was awake enough to beat and fuck, he was happy. Fucking weird. What is he playing at?
“I think he’s waking up,” a woman’s voice spoke out, soft and warm with concern. Elijah wondered who she was. Was she a friend of Kevin’s? What was she doing here? Why was she here? Was she here to help torture him when he had no choice but to open his eyes? Well she was going to have a long time to wait, because there was no fucking way he was going to make his awakening known…not anytime soon. He didn’t care how the muscles in control of his eye lids were straining to open. He was not going to give Kevin what he wanted…not this early.
It was the soft British voice that changed his mind. A voice that he heard only on TV and in dreams. A voice that belonged to the one person he was certain that he’d never meet again. Reluctantly, he relaxed his muscles and his eyes opened to fall on a sight he’d thought never to see again…unless it was on a television or movie screen. Dom. Dom was here and Kevin was nowhere in sight…how? How did this happen? Where was Kevin? Where was he? Looking around at his surroundings, he could see just by the richness of it all that he was in a hotel room, warmly tucked into bed. His injuries seemed to have been tended to, bandages guarding cuts and his injured arm held secure in a blue sling. How did he get here? How did Dom know to do all of this for him?
Elijah shivered as his memory trickled back to him. He had just received the worst beating yet for burning dinner. Kevin had stormed out, with the promise to return. Oh, god, he had hurt him bad. So bad that Elijah knew that he was going to have to flee, but he had no idea where he was going to go until he had seen Dominic on that talk show. He had painfully treked his way to the fancy hotel that said talk show housed it’s guests and argued with the mean attendant to let him see Dominic. Oh god, he had been so frightened. The attendant was trying to throw him back out onto the streets, back to Kevin and if he couldn’t get to Dom, he knew that was where he was going to end up again and then there would be no escape. Then he had seen Dom, looking at him in pure shock. He was like a angel from heaven, infusing Elijah with a sense of safety…then everything had gone dark and he woke up here, safe and tended to.
“Elijah,” Dom went to him, his blue/gray eyes shining with a mixture of concern and trepidation.
Elijah attempted a wry smile as his good hand was engulfed in Dom’s. His breath caught as he looked into those eyes that had always entranced him. When they were together, he could never tell exactly what color Dom’s eyes were. It was good to know that fact hadn’t changed.
“Dom…I made it. I’m here…with you,” He tightened his hold on Dom’s hand, afraid that if he didn’t hold on, everything would fade out and he’d wake up again in his old room with Kevin. His hand felt so good, safe and secure in Dom’s. He never wanted this moment to end…this reunion.
“I can see that…Elijah…what happened? Who did this to you?”
“Should I go?” The blonde girl that was nervously standing by the door, her hand on the knob. Elijah recognized her as Emilie De Ravin. Dom’s co-star. He was surprised to see her in Dom’s room. What was she doing here? Was she something more to Dom than a co-star? Were they together? Not that he should care, of course. He and Dom had been over for two years now and Elijah had moved on to…Kevin. Yeah, Elijah. What a fine fucking move that was. Idiot. You had it all with Dom. A loving boyfriend, a bright career. Then you gave it all away, just so you could beaten within a inch of your life. Wise move indeed.
“Yeah. You need your sleep. I can handle it from here,” Dom nodded, not taking his eyes off Elijah for a second.
“Ok. Call me tomorrow,” Emilie nodded, leaving Dom and Elijah alone in the now silent room.
Setting on the bed, Dom looked at Elijah, his eyes curious and warm. It was obvious that he had no intention of moving until Elijah answered his question, the only problem was, how much did Elijah want to share? He felt so embarrassed…after all that talk he had done about doing what was right for their careers, he ended up with Kevin, and lost everything in the process…how could he ever explain that away?
“I don’t understand you, mate,” Dom got to his feet, now pacing the room. His eyes sparked with frustration and what could be taken as anger. “You told me that you wanted to break things off because our careers were too important to risk, which I understood. It had hurt like hell, but I understood. Next thing I know, you drop off the fucking planet. You’ve cut everyone out of your life and we never hear from you again. Where is it Elijah? Where is the career you dumped me for? Why did you cut the fellowship out of your life? Why was there no bloody word out of you for two years? Explain it to me, because I sure in the hell don’t understand.”
Elijah stared at his hands and cursed himself and his rash decisions over and over again. Fuck! How could he possibly explain how his own life had gotten so much out of his control? How could he make Dom understand? Heck, he couldn’t even understand. “Heh, I don’t either, Dommie.”
Dom just shook his head and sat back down, this time at the edge of the bed. His eyes searched Elijah for an answer…an answer that Elijah wasn’t sure he had at the moment. The younger man wished there was someone…some higher power that could explain why he had let Kevin take control like he had….that could explain why Elijah had given Dom up to a career that didn’t exist and now never would.
“…I had met someone else…I had…or at least I thought I did…I became infatuated with someone a few months after we broke up. I thought it was love…he didn‘t want me to act anymore and he didn‘t want me to talk to you guys either…so I didn‘t,” Elijah’s heart broke as he witnessed the hurt pour into Dom’s handsome features. He knew what Dom must be thinking. He had dumped Dom, claiming that a Homosexual relationship was bad for their careers just to end up with a man just a few months later and giving up the career that seemed to be more important than Dom. Tears fell as self-hatred settled down on him. He had hurt Dom. He had let him go for something that never came to be and ran into the arms of a psychopath. What made him think that Dom would do anything for him? Especially now that he knew the truth? What gave him the right?
“You dumped me…for a career that you gave up…to go to a man that does this to you? I…damn it Lijah! I don’t understand! I mean…I loved you! I would have done anything for you! Why? If it wasn’t for your career, why did you end it? Did you even love me at all?” Dom stood there, tears wetting his cheeks, hurt darkening his eyes.
Elijah looked away, unable to face what he had caused. Dom’s broken heart was evident in his gaze…his hurt clear in his voice. What could he say to fix it? What could he do, but apologize for being a foolish young man that didn’t know what he had at the time…that didn’t even know what he wanted? He had never meant to hurt Dom like this…but he did and he had no clue how to fix it. “I was young and foolish, Dom. What could I say? I thought Kevin…I thought it was love, but now I know it’s not. If it was…he would never have raised a hand to me…he would never have done this. He wouldn’t have forced me to give up my family and friends…I didn’t know what I had with you until it was gone. When Kevin came…I could only think of getting it back.”
Dom just nodded as he got up and walked to the window to stare off into the dark night. The hurt was still evident in the way his shoulders sagged and how he refused to meet Elijah’s eyes. It filled Dom’s entire being.
“Why come to me, Elijah. That’s what I don’t understand. I wasn’t good enough to love…what makes me good enough to come to now?”
Tears filled Elijah’s eyes. Dom was so cold towards him now. All that warm concern, gone. Not that Elijah could blame him…not after what he had done. He was a jerk, dumping Dom and then running back to him when he needed help. Dom should say no. He should send him packing right back to Kevin without a backwards glance. After what Elijah had done, he deserved all that Kevin dealt out. But he couldn’t go back…his survival instinct was in full swing now and would not allow Elijah to back away from the tempting freedom that was before him now. He was safe and he was determined to stay that way.
“…I couldn’t stay any longer. If I did…he’d kill me, I know he would. I didn’t know where I was going to go, nor to who. Then I saw you, on that talk show. I knew you’d help…whether you wanted to or not…you wouldn’t turn me away. I know it seems like I’m using you, but Dom…I have no one else to turn to. He’ll hurt my family if I go to them and the others…well you know what happened there. He had me cut off all ties to them. I couldn’t contact them…but I could get to you and I knew you’d help me, because that’s the type of person you are. You wouldn’t turn away someone in need of help…even if it’s someone you hated.”
Dom looked at him, his gaze cold, yet unsure. Elijah was certain that he’d say no. After all, he had just found out that Elijah was with another man almost as soon as their relationship had ended. He had broken his heart. Who knew what it took for Dom to move on with his life. Elijah just hoped that he hadn’t hardened his heart…that he wouldn’t throw Elijah out into the street. Finally Dom’s gaze softened and he looked away, his mind made up.
“ I don’t hate you, damn it. Even though I should,“ Dom sighed, his eyes never leaving Elijah’s once. Oh he was still angry, but vengeful. “I was never able to refuse you anything. I see that hasn’t changed. Despite the fact that you’ve hurt me…I can’t let you go back to that wanker.”
“Dom…”
“No! Don’t say anything. Please…just…just relax. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”
Elijah settled back against the pillow, his muscles losing their tension. Warmth filled him at Dom’s words. I’ll keep you safe. A promise from the man that he had hurt…a promise that had meant everything. Safe. He’ll keep him safe. That night, for the first time in a long time, that was exactly how Elijah felt. Safe.
