Throughout the day of the Festival, the length of the main street has been blocked off to normal traffic. Instead, rows of stalls, vendors, games and other entertainment travel across the largest vein of the city. Pedestrians wander from each event in massive waves, for both rich and poor alike have taken this opportunity to dismiss their cares for a single day in favor of this celebration. Taverns are filled throughout the city, the Bazaar sees its share of sales and once-a-year bargains. Bards and dancers line the streets, offering performances for the lines of passersby. The Festival of Lions commemorates an event so distant that whatever purpose it once served has perhaps lost much of its initial meaning, as dolls and merchandise with the figures of adorable lions can be bought and seen wherever one seems to travel. A civil war of an earlier age, a peasant rising up to become a king and bring an era of peace throughout the land, they are fantastic enough without the need for greater truths. The People's Hero runs throughout the day, a popular play during this holiday. Full of daring adventure, breathtaking romance, and even a hint of tragedy, the audiences never seems to wane, even as the sun begins to set. By evening, most citizens celebrating the holiday have gathered at the city square. This large open space has now been transformed into an outside dance hall, and couples of all variety can be seen dancing to the live show of music. There are many different rumors as to how this tradition began, the most popular of which is highlighted in The People's Hero--the story of the peasant king and his rescue and romance of a beautiful, kidnapped princess. An unlikely pair, of course, between a commoner and a noble, but that perhaps is where the popularity arose. The Festival of Lions, whatever truth or origin it once derived from, continues to give the people of Ivalice a sense of hope. That what may seem impossible may one day be within our reach. After dusk, a display of fireworks goes off over the city, illuminating the celebration below in an awe-inspiring display of color. |
