When Merri heard the knock at his door, he almost didn't get out of bed to answer it. He had stayed in bed for most of the day, willing himself up only to try to force himself to get ready for his morning meetings, but he hadn't been able to go further than the edge of the bed before the tears spilled from his eyes again. He could, apparently, still cry, and he didn't want to incur anybody's worry or questions if he started sobbing in front of them. No, they all had more important things to be concerned about than his heartbreak, and so he had sent Peony and Toku a message to excuse himself from his duties for the day. Just for the day, for he hoped Faram would give him the strength to face tomorrow. (But what was tomorrow without--) No, perhaps it was time to take his head from the pillow. Tear-soaked as it was, he could still smell the captain upon it, and it did him no good. Merri heard his name from the other side of the door, and he managed to croak out, "Just a minute" though he barely recognized his own voice against the weight of words. Merri dragged himself out of bed once more and slowly slumped to the bathroom, and it was by accident he caught his eye in the mirror. "Oh, Faram," he murmured; between his wet cheeks and puffy and red eyes, he looked awful. Perhaps it would be enough to truly convince Toku when -- if he came over that Merri had been sick today. He turned on the faucet and splashed cold water on his face in an effort to wash some of it away, but it did him little good, and he had kept Drake waiting for too long. With a heavy heart and a sigh, Merri finally went to the door to answer it, keeping his eyes on his feet. "Hi," he mumbled. It was all he could manage. |
