He wasn't sure how he had gotten there to being with, although now he remembered it vividly. It was burnt into his brain adding to the nightmares that he already had. As he opened the door to his flat, he looked around for any sign of the thing that had nearly killed him. Everything was in it's proper place, but still he looked, and listened for any noises, anything that would attack. He felt for the knife, although it had vanished, dropped on the floor of a greenhouse.
He quickly turned on every light, feeling nauseous again. He hadn't felt this since he was 16. He had someone who helped him then, but he had failed. There was one thing that remained. He was not a killer. He had left the creature alive, too cowardly, or perhaps too human to finish it off. He hadn't wanted to die. Something else occurred to him. Regardless of what was in the pot, he was still angry that the creature had taken it. Did he really want that head? No. He just wanted what was his, and once more he had lost it. It wasn't just the loss that was terrifying, but the need, the greed.
He looked under everything in the room, and then onto the bedroom. He finally convinced himself there was nothing there, locking the door to prevent anything from coming in. He walked to the cupboard and pulled out a bottle of fire whiskey. It was the same thing that the professor had given him when they were in hiding at Spinners End. It felt like yesterday, watching the man fall from the tower. Although now he could fight, he was still no better than his father, greedy and desperate.
He took a drink, feeling his stomach protest. That wouldn't stop him tonight. If he got sick, he would just start again until he killed the vision of the thing picking skin off of a shrunken head. It was a vision that shook him at the foundation and one that Draco would never forget.
