Veronica Mars/Dominionist storyline

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]laevatein)

Hey, everyone, I've been lurking here for a while, and found this quite interesting. I'm a major in anthropology, and tend to have fun making connections between the media and current issues. I'm wondering if anyone has been following Veronica Mars at all?

So on Veronica Mars, there's this character named Meg, who comes from a wholesome family. (This is how it is presented in season one. The main character even tells Meg that she "would believe cartoon birds braided her hair each morning".) I didn't catch any tell-tale things in the first season, (except for one episode that introduces Meg, but I digress.)

So the plotline of Season 2 involves a bus crashing into the ocean during a field trip. The only survivor of this crash is Meg, who is comatose for a while. Meg's little sister approaches Veronica with Meg's laptop, saying they need to clear it of the files, because some of the personal stuff their parents will kill Meg for if they find it out. Which was odd.

A few episodes later you find out that Meg was emailing child services claiming that one of the charges she babysat for was being abused. The big twist in the episode is when they find the "evidence" for the claim. It's a notebook filled with all these things including "I will be good/pure" etc. They figure out the youngest child in Meg's family is being abused by the parents, at least psychologically. They make it quite clear the family does this for religious reasons.

Last episode, Veronica finds out Meg is pregnant and Meg wakes up. And finally, in tonight's episode, Meg tells Veronica that her parents want to put the child up for adoption at some place where adoption is a "religious contract" (forgot the exact terminology used there) and it's almost guarenteed the child will end up in a tough-love endorsing household. She claims she doesn't want her child to grow up like that, and insists Veronica make sure something else happens to the baby if anything happens to her.

Now is this me, or are they blatently making references to dominionist-type families? Do any other shows do this?

Sorry if I misread signs, but I've never approached this topic before.
