Wow.

Nigeria is trying to pass a law that would make gays even meeting for a meal together illegal.

"These People Should Be Court-Martialed"

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]sunfell)

Mickey Weinstein, a former USAF officer and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation has an interview with Salon Magazine about the "Christian Embassy" embedded in the Pentagon. He is not happy, and we should not be happy either:

We have a systemic problem. You sound like you're too young to remember Robert Redford in "Three Days of the Condor," but the premise of that movie was that there was a CIA within the CIA. We have a virulently dominionist, fundamentalist evangelical Christian element within the Pentagon. [emphasis mine] They would prefer this to be the "Pentecostalgon," not the Pentagon. That's what they would prefer. They're trying to turn the Pentagon into a frickin' faith-based initiative, and that is not what our military is about.

Court-martial is needed... )

Your friend and mine, Tom has a new blog on the net. Read the article here:

Houston Chron link

And located here are a cache of the original, slightly vulgar comments he got on his blog, before it got scrubbed. Good reading. Lots of name calling :D

Oh, and here's an article on Jay Bakker, Jim and Tammy Faye's boy, on how Jerry Falwell kicked their asses to the curb when their ministry project fell to scandal in the late 80s. Interesting.

Muslims not fit to serve in Congress

Enough evidence exists for Congress to question Ellison's qualifications to be a member of Congress as well as his commitment to the Constitution in view of his apparent determination to embrace the Quran and an Islamic philosophy directly contrary to the principles of the Constitution. But common sense alone dictates that in the midst of a war with Islamic terrorists we should not place someone in a position of great power who shares their doctrine. In 1943, we would never have allowed a member of Congress to take their oath on "Mein Kampf," or someone in the 1950s to swear allegiance to the "Communist Manifesto." Congress has the authority and should act to prohibit Ellison from taking the congressional oath today!

The author of this is Roy Moore, famed ex-Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who was removed over the whole Ten Commandments in the Courthouse issue.

And there's another one...

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]kynn)

Pastor Paul Barnes of the 2,100-member Grace Chapel of Englewood near Denver, Colorado, resigned after announcing in a video to his congregation that he engaged in sexual encounters with other men.

The Denver Post reported that an anonymous caller reported to the leaders of the church about overhearing a conversation in which someone mentioned "blowing the whistle" on evangelical preachers engaged in homosexuality, including Barnes. The leaders then confronted Barnes with the allegations.

In the video tape Barnes made for his congregation and viewed by reporters at the Denver Post, Barnes tearfully said he experienced homosexual tendencies since he was 5-years-old.

"I have struggled with homosexuality since I was a 5-year-old boy. I can't tell you the number of nights I cried myself to sleep, begging God to take this away," he said.

Barnes founded the Protestant mega church 28 years ago after graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary. He explained that he cannot accept that a person is born as a homosexual and said he asked God many times why he was called to start Grace Chapel, carrying a "horrible burden." In the video he said he considers his homosexuality a "thorn in his flesh" but expressed hope in a future where one can "be who you are" and be accepted and loved in the Christian community. He also spoke about how some are "separating some of the teachings from Scripture" from Jesus Christ.

Which makes me think of a great idea.

  1. Locate the largest conservative evangelical mega-church
  2. Go to a pay phone
  3. Call them up and ask to speak to someone besides the minister
  4. Tell them in hushed tones that you've overheard someone planning to out the preacher as gay
  5. Hang up before they ask questions
  6. Wait and see if anyone resigns
  7. Find the next largest mega-church and repeat from step 2

Endless fun!

Disclaimer: Okay, not really.
