Family First refuses preference swap with lesbians

Yeah, the part that really does it for me is that it's apparently fine with Family First if you have an affair while your wife is pregnant, with twins no less.

Now I'll be the first to admit that "swapping preferences" is not something I am particularly clear on. It reads like endorsement. It seems to have something to do with their form of Instant Runoff, and the "how to vote cards" supplied by party members at voting places. (See Wikipedia). Perhaps some of you who live under parliamentary forms of government can clarify that point?

No matter the exact meaning though, my point stands. Be unfaithful to your pregnant wife. We don't mind. But don't you dare love another member of the same sex.

For those who don't know:
The Family First Party is a political party in Australia. Although officially a secular party, it has close links to the Pentecostal movement, in particular the Assemblies of God Church, and its social policies generally mirror conservative Christian values (but not necessarily politically conservative values). Santorum flip-flops. Surprised? Only that he signed it in the first place.

Interesting series

One of the few blogs I read has a guest writer for a few days, and the topic she is addressing is the authoritarian personality, specifically that of the followers. She's starting from "Conservatives without a Conscience" and then working from there. Seems like her background is similar to some here: a walk-away from a dominionist-esque church. Hope some find this useful.

Yes, these are adult bookstores. Yes, some of the merchendise is a little over the top. But I have major issues with this in terms of free expression. I'm particularly concerned with the civil suits that could force the stores to close for 3 months to 2 years.

Of likely interest to those of you in the Houston area:
Former War Correspondent and Author Chris Hedges to speak at The Rothko Chapel

Renowned war correspondent and author, Chris Hedges, will speak on the topic of his upcoming book American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America on September 25, 2006 at 7:30 pm at The Rothko Chapel.
Read more... ) After reading this article, I am very interested in hearing Mr. Hedges speak. They are asking for RSVP for the date in question.
The spark that could set it ablaze may be lying in the hands of an Islamic terrorist cell, in the hands of the ideological twins of the Christian Right. Another catastrophic terrorist attack could be our Reichstag fire, the excuse used to begin the accelerated dismantling of our open society. The ideology of the Christian Right is not one of love and compassion, the central theme of Christ's message, but of violence and hatred. It has a strong appeal to many in our society, but it is also aided by our complacency. Let us not stand at the open city gates waiting passively and meekly for the barbarians. They are coming. They are slouching rudely towards Bethlehem. Let us, if nothing else, begin to call them by their name.
