Eight years. It had been eight very long years since Marlene had last walked these halls as a student. Even now, she wasn't walking so much as hobbling. In the five years since the war had ended, she'd re-learned how to walk on her destroyed leg, but her gait would never return to what it had been. The cane she used for balance helped make sure of that. Probably Marlene should start hobbling back to the Great Hall. Everyone else had probably arrived while she was hobbling around, but she was almost to the Gryffindor common room, it would be such a shame to turn back now. Before too long, she was standing in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady. Professor Dumbledore had been kind enough to provide her with a password, but as the portrait swung open, Marlene realised that she had forgotten about one very important thing: climbing through the hole with a bum leg and cane in tow. Damned if she didn't try, though, ahe would have fallen if not for a pair of strong hands that caught her almost immediately and helped set her to rights. Once she was steady on her feet and cane, Marly looked up into the familiar brown eyes of Sirius Black. "Dumbles sent a patronus that you were heading up this way," he said. "I ... figured I'd wait for you." "Thank you," Marlene replied. Her leg was aching from the trek up from the entrance hall, too many stairs when she wasn't used to it. She hobbled over to an armchair and eased herself down into it. Sirius followed her over, pulling another armchair over so that they were sitting opposite each other. Without saying a word, he pulled her ruined leg up onto his lap and rubbed her sore calf. It had been five years since she'd seen him. Not since the collective wake they'd held for all the fallen Order members. Doc and Charity, Dedalus, Benjy, Dung, Moody, Dorcas, Emmeline, Pepper and Effie, the Bonses, Prewetts, Tonkses, and Weasleys, ... James and Lily, Remus, Peter. So many friends, their best friends, gone. And yet they had survived. The worst of it, for Marlene, was that Remus and Peter had died when her leg got mangled. That was why she had avoided Sirius for five years. His two remaining best friends, and she had been unable to save them. "Remember sixth year?" Sirius asked suddenly. Marlene met his eyes again, raising a brow oh-so-slightly. "We did so much shite that year, you'll need to be more specific." "Truth or dare. Most dangerous game for a Gryffindor to play." He grinned. "You dared me and James to streak through the Great Hall." Marlene choked on a laugh. "Nobody could touch their sausage at breakfast that morning. We all got detentions for months. And the Howlers, Merlin." "You ever wish we could go back to that?" "Every day." |
