It helps me sleep tonight Maybe it can stop tomorrow From stealing all my time His arm, snug around her waist, was nearly enough to make her want to stay, especially combined with his breath, slow and steady, against the back of her neck. But she couldn't stay. Alone, they were big enough of targets. Together, they might as well have bulls-eyes painted on their foreheads. The clock was broken, so Marlene had no idea what time it was, but Sirius was sound asleep, so it was time to go. Marlene slipped out of bed and dressed quickly and quietly, careful not to wake him up. She wasn't running away from the war, just the Order; she would continue to fight, but she had to do what she could to try to reduce the target on Sirius. He might be a traitor in their eyes, but he was at least still pure. Maybe that would be enough to save him. At the door, Marlene paused, turning to look back at Sirius. She couldn't do this. She couldn't slip out in the middle of the night as he slept. Not after he'd been there for her when her parents were murdered by the Death Eaters. Not after he stood by her when she thought she was going crazy. Not after everything. He deserved more, better. But he also deserved the chance to survive. Her eyes darted to the clock again, which was stuck at 11:00. Even though she knew it was broken, that it was much later, she was tempted to believe that it really was only 11:00. That she had plenty of time. That tomorrow could wait. No, she had to go. Although her heart was breaking, she had to leave him. She wouldn't be strong enough to say goodbye if she waited any longer. She slipped out of the room, closing the door softly and quietly behind her. She crept out of the flat on bare feet, holding her shoes in her hand. Once out in the hall, she slipped her shoes on and apparated away. All the supplies she needed were waiting for her at the flat she'd shared with Ro. He was gone now, too. Letters for everyone, anyone who might come looking for her here, were sitting on the kitchen table. Everything she needed to turn her hair red and cut it short was waiting in the loo. Her bag was packed and waiting. She was as ready to leave as she would ever be. Except for one thing. She picked up the picture frame on the counter, staring through watery eyes at the picture from happier days. It was her and Sirius, from one of the thousands of times they had been at James and Lily's house. Wiping away the tears in her eyes, she slipped the picture into her bag. |
