Just when things were starting to go well for him again, something came along and grabbed hold of his good mood and dragged it back down to wallow in his own self pity in the bottomless well that was the many issues Jim Kirk harbored. He did well to hide them -- pretty face, charming smile, bright eyes; all perfect for that illusion of happiness, that mask that told people he was fine and didn't have a care in the world. Too bad that was the direct opposite of what he was really feeling and now it was back to being a tangled mess of contradictory thoughts that he didn't have the ability to properly articulate to anyone and at the moment, didn't really feel like vocalizing. He was content with keeping things to himself, not wanting to drag anyone down with him.
Besides, he had the command chair all to himself again, now that Captain Data was gone. He'd tried to contact the android from the 24th Century to no avail and had sought him out, using skills that had landed him in trouble more often than not in his youth to enter the captain's quarters, only to find it devoid of any signs someone had ever been there. Just his luck. Back to having the responsibility all to himself. He was capable of it and had done a fine job without Data's help before, but it had been nice having someone to share the burden.
"Vodka," he told the bartender as he sat himself down on a stool at the bar, dressed in jeans and a plain white t-shirt with a leather jacket to cover, looking every bit the man he was prior to his entrance into Starfleet Academy. He was in the mood for something different, something a little stronger.
Something to distract him from thinking too hard about things he couldn't change.
