WHO Mona & Dia
WHEN Monday, 13th May, just before midnight
WHERE Inside the circus grounds
WHAT Highway robbery without the highway
WARNINGS light violence, knives,
a small measure of break the cutie.
Just a few blocks away from the cirque grounds there was something that called itself Wilder Park, a strong claim - Mona thought - for what appeared to be little more than a long, narrow stretch of grass occupied by a small patch of trees and one piece of children's play equipment. And although it was dark and a little shifty, Mona had crossed through it every time she came back from the city after a night out and it had never seemed unsafe.
Mona wasn't good at learning that just because something seemed safe, that didn't mean that it was.
The young men were sitting on the bench by the path and, as she approached them, Mona slouched her shoulders a little more and kept her eyes on the ground. She was ready for one of them to say something, some drunken comment. She wasn't ready for it when one of them stood up suddenly and blocked her path.
"You got a light?" he asked her.
"Sorry," Mona said with a shake of her head, and then moved to the side to go past him. He grabbed her arm and stopped her.
"Give us your phone and wallet," he said and Mona looked up at him with a deep frown of incomprehension. Was he- was she being robbed? One of his friends still sat on the bench, but the other had moved to stand behind her. Mona didn't want to give these men her money or phone! They were hers!
Fear was being overridden by a sense of injustice. Didn't they know she came from a murder circus??
She suddenly heard Rex's voice in her head from the lessons he'd started giving her, about how striking at someone's neck was always good. No, she was not giving her things to some jerk punk! So, while he was still gripping her arm, Mona struck out with a punch that aimed for his throat.
But it was poorly aimed and not hard enough and he saw it coming. He slapped her in response, sudden and surprising and utterly unexpected, and Mona heard the flick of a knife opening, recognizable from a thousand movies. Her vision felt blurred and confused from the slap, but she felt it when he pressed a knife underneath her chin. His other hand was digging harder into her arm.
"I could gut you, you fucking bitch," he snapped, and she could feel now the other man standing very close behind her, felt herself almost pinned between them. "Phone and wallet!"
Mona could hear her teeth chattering but it wasn't cold. She whimpered and reached into her pockets, pulling out the requested items with shaking hands. He grabbed them from her, shoving them towards the man behind her. Mona shrunk and flinched. The man with the knife pressed it a little harder under her chin and then pulled it away. "Now fucking run away," he told her.
Mona didn't need to be told again and took off as fast as she could, feet slamming down against the path as she heard their laughing growing quieter behind her. She didn't stop running until she was far enough inside the gates of the circus that she was sure no one could possibly be following her or see her from outside, not this far in. Her lungs were on fire and so was her cheek. She brushed a hand under her chin and found a tiny splash of blood where the knife must have nicked her.
Mona took a very deep breath and then sat down heavily on the nearest bench before she started sobbing.
