Who: Alcuin and Allison (cue scare violins)
Where: Hale Estate.
When: Week 14, Monday afternoon.
Why: Because no good deed ever goes unpunished. Moral of the story? Never search out the wail of a banshee – I mean, baby. It's a trap.
Warnings: The babies, the horror, and the awkward. Also, cuddles.
It shouldn't have bothered him so much that he couldn't perform this one simple task for his master – but it did, just a little bit. Scott, for his part, never seemed to really mind his ineptitude in the kitchen but it stung his pride to know there was a need that he could not fulfill, no matter how hard he tried. It was the very least that he could do to make certain his master had something remotely palatable to eat and drink when he came home from work and for that he would need to swallow his pride and defer to the expert. Besides, he had already observed that his master would eat anything that didn't actively attempt to flee the area (and perhaps even then.) It couldn't possibly have been healthy for him.
Unfortunately, the expert was nowhere to be found. Which is what led him to sneakily proportion slightly more fruits and vegetables than meat products in the small paper bag he carried and hope the chocolate pudding cups were enough to distract him from that fact. If everything went to plan, his master would be pleased and the lingering worry that he might be developing a critical vitamin deficiency would be temporarily assuaged.
Alcuin was just about to make his way back to the cabin when the sound of an infant crying filtered down from one of the rooms upstairs. He debated going to see if perhaps one of the domestic slaves needed help and almost decided against it until he heard the wailing of another infant in tandem with the other. He only hoped that he would not be punished later for trying to help as he carefully deposited the paper bag on one of the nearby end tables and made his way up the stairs to the room in which the infants were kept.
“Oh,” Alcuin realized his mistake too late as the door creaked open the rest of the way beneath his fingertips. Luckily, he recovered quickly. “Might I be of some help, miss?”
