Who: Kain and L(Open)
Where: The forest north of Asgard.
When: Shortly after Kain's second fight with L.
Rating: PG, subject to change.
Warnings: Kain threatening L?
Summary: After Kain and L go at it for a second time, Kain is left feeling very pissed off and decides to blow some steam by taking a walk. And hitting things.

It was a beautiful day. The sky was blue with the occasional white fluffy cloud, birds were singing, and everything was bright, green, and cheerful. Kain glowered at it all from behind his helmet as he tromped toward the forest, pausing once he was under the cover of the trees to think. It was ridiculous, that he'd been so careless. Henry had been right. Fighting was one thing. Fighting in full view of your enemies was quite another, and he should have been able to tell the difference.

Oh, he still wanted to pummel Ryuzaki, but now the thought brought some shame with it. If anyone should know the consequences of fighting amongst teammates it was him, but had he thought about it? No. He was too stupid and self absorbed. He'd never be able to change for the better.

With a growl, he punched the tree nearest him, a futile effort to vent his frustration that barely shook the tree and caused pain to shoot through his hand.

Great. Now I'm punching trees. That's very mature behavior, Kain. He thought bitterly, shaking his hand as though hoping to shake the pain from it.

"This day couldn't possibly get any worse."

((I can think of a very quick way to make this scene very exciting, but I don't want to bring L into this unless it's OK with Kain's RPer. Who, I should mention, I respect very much. ^^))

((Oh, that's totally fine with me! Haha, aww, thank you. You're a great RPer yourself, our last little conversation was hysterical. <3))

At this very opportune moment, L, who was paying very close attention to his journal, happened to be passing through. His eyes widened when he saw Kain, and he swiftly snapped the journal closed and stuffed it into a pocket of his oversized suit blazer. It was too late to go unseen... Kain's comment about the day not possibly getting any worse seemed strangely ironic.

((haha, yes, I was laughing like an idiot. That was a great conversation. ))

He had done some investigating, despite his claim of disinterest. That was how he recognized Kain, even though they'd only spoken through the comm channels... besides, who else in the CU realm would be this angry today?

Kain's head snapped around to get a good look at the person who had entered the forest, the sound of the journal shutting startling him. As he watched the man, he was about to ask who he was when he noticed that he seemed nervous, almost shifty. His eyes narrowed.

Oh, you've got to be kidding me. He thought, straightening up.

"You're Ryuzaki, aren't you?"

It almost wasn't a question, and Kain had already crossed his arms, a look that seemed to be a cross between anger and grim amusement creeping onto his face.

"I might be," L said guardedly, taking a step backward. They were both thin, but he didn't doubt that, in a contest of strength, Kain could probably wallop him. "And you're Kain." he bit the tip of his thumb, staring at Kain's hurting hand. "That looks painful. I had no idea you'd get so angry."

"I might be." Kain echoed, taking a step forward as Ryuaki took a step back. He decided it was probably a good thing he hadn't brought his lance with him, as he'd be sorely tempted to use it. He was just about to come up with some scathing insult, but Ryuzaki's observation caught him off guard, and he paused, blinking and looking down at his hand once more. His knuckles were pretty torn up from the tree back, scratched and bleeding. He imagined he'd have some pretty good bruises later.

"Yeah, well..." Kain trailed off, glancing over at Ryuzaki again. "It's not just because of you."

He shifted uncomfortably, immediately regretting his words. He didn't seem quite so threatening now, though he still looked aggravated.

"You give yourself too much credit." He finished lamely.

L blinked several times. "Um... right. I'm going to ask you, civilly, to not hurt me. I think that you should avoid using that hand for a bit, anyway..."

He wondered what Kain meant by "not just because of you." Maybe he was just angry at himself for overreacting. Somehow, he didn't seem... as threatening as L had expected him to be. Honestly... he'd been bracing himself for a punch in the face. Maybe he'd still be subject to one.

"I guess that we all get what we deserve..." he said vaguely, glancing at the tree branches while continuing to nibble his thumb. He looked unbelievably spacey, and a little incapable of the little barbed comments he'd tossed off earlier for next to no reason.

Kain took a deep breath and shook his head, a small chuckle escaping his lips in spite of himself. It wasn't every day that people asked him not to hurt them, especially in such a polite way. Showing an astounding amount of restraint, Kain backed up a few steps, and shrugged, relaxing a bit.

"It wouldn't be worth the trouble to kick your ass, anyway." Kain replied, remembering Henry's words. The potential drama and rifts that it beating up another member would cause wouldn't be worth the moment of enjoyment.

He watched Ryuzaki curiously, as he seemed to totally space out and ignore the situation. This skinny, unhealthy looking, spacey guy was the one who had been causing all this trouble?

Kain sighed at his remark. "Yeah. I guess so." He knew that all too well.

After a moment of awkward silence, Kain huffed and crossed his arms again, the frown returning. "So why were you coming through here, anyway? Just out for a pleasant stroll?"

Somehow he doubted that someone as pale as Ryuzaki would willingly spend much time outdoors, and his suspicion of the other man hadn't faded.

Dropping his gaze back to earth before it meandered up towards the general direction of Kain's face, L scratched the back of his head distractedly. "I thought that I'd get to know the area a bit better. It's a new world, after all... I don't really enjoy strolls all that much. But there's something I should get straight with you. I couldn't have expected you to 'get it' right away, but it had to look real. You have to have some idea, now, what the whole point of arguing so conspicuously is."

Kain just stared at Ryuzaki, totally dumbfounded. Then he titled he head a bit, watching him with an almost predatory look in his eye.

"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Care to inform me?" The last part came out as a growl, the threat in it clear. Kain hoped the conversation wasn't going the way he thought it was going--namely, that Ryuzaki had been goading him into arguing with him for some stupid reason of his own--or he may have to reconsider his decision not to throttle the detective.

((Is it cool with you if Kain gets a little physical if L pisses him off? Just wanted to make sure before he started doing something stupid. :D))

((lol, it's totally fine. XD ))

L noticed and was wary of the predatory gleam that had appeared in Kain's eyes. He just might have chosen the wrong person to mock that day.

"A false sense of security is irreplaceable," he said quietly, choosing his words carefully. "If Hell thinks that we're at each other's throats, then we can approach things from a creative and unexpected angle." Did that sound too condescending? He shoved his hands into his pockets, looking away from Kain. The fact that he had a really difficult time with eye contact could very easily be misinterpreted as disrespect... but Kain seemed bent on one thing, and it didn't promise to be particularly warm and friendly.

Quick as a flash, Kain grabbed the collar of Ryuzaki's shirt roughly.

"You mean to tell me," Kain began, his voice suddenly cold, "That your plan was to make me look like an idiot to lull our enemies into a false sense of security?"

He clenched his injured left hand and pulled it back, looking ready to deck the other man. But he hesitated. Ryuzaki's plan had some merit, he had to give him that, and he knew that he probably hadn't meant anything personal by it, even if he wanted to think that he did.

It seemed like this always happened. Someone was always using him for their plans, whether they be the good or bad. Even leaving his own world hadn't broken the trend. With a weary sigh he lowered his arm, and let Ryuzaki go.

"Next time you decide to use me in one of your plans tell me ahead of time, or I really will break your face." Kain said, his voice bordering on apologetic. "You'd be surprised how useful I can be. I'm an amazingly good liar."

Figuring that the detective probably wouldn't want to say anything else to him after his overreaction, he turned and began to walk away.

Automatically, L stiffened when Kain grabbed him, bracing himself for a punch that would probably knock a few teeth loose, at the very least. But it never landed. Cautiously opening his eyes, L stared at Kain. He scuttled backwards the moment he was released, watching the other man guardedly.

He wasn't used to being manhandled... or even touched without permission. That had been a serious breach of L's all-important personal space. But, somehow... he felt like, on some level, he'd definitely deserved a good scare, at least. He listened to Kain's threat, hearing a ghost of an apology, and reached a nagging realization.

Raising his voice slightly to compensate for the distance between them increasing as Kain walked away, L said, "It was wrong of me to play you for a fool. I apologize for manipulating you." Even though the plan doubtless would have worked... maybe it was time to release his strangle-hold on it.

Kain paused, and glanced over his shoulder at Ryuzaki. He wasn't used to having people apologize to him. For a moment he said nothing, not really sure how to react or what to say.

"Thanks." He said finally, deciding that while it probably wasn't the most eloquent response, it at least got his point across. With that, he faced ahead once more and left.

((Good thread! Hope I didn't cut it off too soon. A journal entry is on the way~ :3))
