Automatically, L stiffened when Kain grabbed him, bracing himself for a punch that would probably knock a few teeth loose, at the very least. But it never landed. Cautiously opening his eyes, L stared at Kain. He scuttled backwards the moment he was released, watching the other man guardedly.
He wasn't used to being manhandled... or even touched without permission. That had been a serious breach of L's all-important personal space. But, somehow... he felt like, on some level, he'd definitely deserved a good scare, at least. He listened to Kain's threat, hearing a ghost of an apology, and reached a nagging realization.
Raising his voice slightly to compensate for the distance between them increasing as Kain walked away, L said, "It was wrong of me to play you for a fool. I apologize for manipulating you." Even though the plan doubtless would have worked... maybe it was time to release his strangle-hold on it.
