Who: Ali and Marie
When: Late evening after the meeting
Where: Marie's apartment

Wrapped in a robe, Marie was going over some documents for the next day's meetings. The candles flickered around her - she had long decided that she preferred them to electric lights, but didn't get to indulge very often - as she turned a page.

She'd intended on going to bed soon. Even set a timer and all. Which didn't matter when it stopped after the first buzz and she kept reading.

So at least she was awake when someone rang her apartment.

Ali was propping himself up with one of the doorway. After the Winters meeting, he'd made sure than everything was cleaned up after everyone had left, told his partner that he was responsible for closing the restaurant that night and retreated to his office with some of the imported Italian wine.

He'd drunk half the bottle before the su Chef and his partner had bundled him into a cab and he'd drunkenly given the man Marie's address instead of his own.

He pressed the doorbell once.

She pressed the intercom button. Probably it was Ali; very few other people would dare to disturb her at this hour. But hadn't he had some important thing at his restaurant tonight?

"Yes?"

"Sweetheart, um, please let me in." Ali managed to say coherently. "I need to see you. To know that at least something in my life makes sense."

She buzzed him in, then started down to the lobby to meet him. That was not a sober Ali. Or a very okay Ali, it sounded like.

"I'll see you in a minute, dear."

"Thanks," He walked into the lobby and rested against one of the columns.

A brother, a bunch of wives, and probably a hangover to equal anything the Formorians could have thrown at him and the fact that he could make that statement and mean it was just another thing to show how not right he was at the moment.

He needed Marie. He needed her to yell at him and to chide him for getting so drunk and disturbing her. He needed that normalcy.

She walked over from the elevator, brow creased with worry, and immediately went over to hold him.

And then promptly wrinkled her nose at the smell of the alcohol.

"Just how much did you have to drink?" she asked, tone slightly acerbic. "And what warranted it?"

"Half a bottle of Italian Red," Alistair replied, "And family issues warranted it. They so warranted it." He looked at her desperately, " I...I didn't know where else to come. I'm sorry."

She tugged him over to the elevator, an arm around his waist. "Mmm. Well, I hadn't actually gone to bed yet, so there's that to be thankful for. Have you had water? Bread? Aspirin?" Because she would way, way rather spend half an hour preventing the hangover than the next morning shoving him into the shower.

He could tell her exactly what was going on after he sobered up a little.

"Some rolls back at the office," Ali mumbled, " No water or aspirin. Again I'm sorry...I know you have work and I don't want to impose on that...you're busy and I respect that.." He followed her, leaning slightly into her touch. He craved touch at the moment. He just wanted to curl up somewhere and hold her until his world started making sense again. If it ever did.

"Well," as the doors dinged open, "you're going to drink more water than you think you need, and take some aspirin, and tuck you into bed. Which is where I should've been an hour or more ago anyway."

She wouldn't have pegged him for an apologetic drunk, but then this seemed to be unusual circumstances.

"Strangely enough, this whole 'dating' thing tends to come with downs, too. So shush and come in."

Her apartment was eclecticly decorated, but put together for all that. Candles were the dominant form of lighting, and the fireplace actually looked like it got used. The whole place gave off a comfortable, lived-in, yet neat air. Except for the stacks of papers on Marie's desk that she'd been going over when Ali showed up.

[ooc: I cannot wait for them to start talking and her to be all "well at least you haven't SET ANYONE ON FIRE RECENTLY" and him to go "whuthuh?"]

Ali nodded, heading straight for the couch where he curled up in a small a ball as he could manage. One part of him was berating him to disturbing her, the other was so relieved that this place radiated peace and comfort and that Marie scent that he was amazingly obsessed with. He'd kicked his loafers off by the door so that it wouldn't mess up her furniture.

He hummed softly a little desperate tune as he waited for her to come back.

She stuck the bottle of aspirin in her bathrobe pocket and poured several glasses of water, all of which came out to the living room with her.

"Here, love." Glasses to the side table, aspirin opened and three tablets shaken into his hand. "Drink up, and tell me what happened."

She sat sideways on the couch, crosslegged, watching him. Her knees pressed against his thigh, one hand rubbing idly at his shoulder.

Alistair did as she told him to. The water helped to clear his mind a small bit.

"Where do I begin?" He wondered out loud, "I want to tell you but I don't know if I can."

She arched an eyebrow at that. "The beginning is usually a good place to start."

Whatever had done this to him, she was going to find it and kick its ass.

"I don't know if you'll believe me." He muttered, "Hell, I almost can't believe me." He sat back against the couch, head gazing up at the ceiling. "It'll sound totally crazy and...I'd rather not have to lose you over it." He didn't think he could handle that. At all.

A surge of... something. Familiar? Had they done this before? Came over her.

And she was not-thinking about the mugging. Because lighting people on fire just was not possible. Right? If she believed that then she was crazy, too.

Deep breath. "It sounds like this is going to be something... that affects you long term? In which case I'd rather not have it between us." She knew what pretending something didn't exist did to relationships, after all.

His shoulders sagged, "I'm a god. Dagda, to be precise, reincarnated into human form. The All-father of the Celtic deities." Once he'd started talking, he found that he couldn't stop. He told her everything about the dinner and Danu and Ogma, and how he was so very unsure of how to proceed about from here.

After staring at him for a moment, Marie tucked her head to his shoulder, offering support. And a way for him not to see her face, which went from disbelieving to considering to... well, to remembering.

All the times she'd convinced people her way was the best way. Her affinity for fire. Her dreams about a forge, the clang of weapons. Nightmares about a hideous man, followed by battle, her sons working tirelessly at the back of the lines.

But she didn't want it to make sense. She was a United States Representative, not a reincarnated deity. So when he finished, all she managed was a soft, barely audible, "...oh."

She didn't move from nestling next to him, though, which she hoped he would take as a good sign.

He clutched her to him. "Please tell me that this is not going to radically change us." he asked her quietly, desperately.

"I... don't know. I don't think so?" Wry glance up at him. "It's a bit much to take in."

There was a bubble of hysteria rising there, and she tried hard to push it down, but... "At least you haven't set anyone on fire lately."

Shit. "I said that out loud, didn't I."

Alistair looked at her, "Yes, yes you did." He stared at her for a second, "Danu bless, sweetheart," he exclaimed, seeing her almost for the first time.

"Do you understand me when I tell you I love you more than life itself." He asked her in Gaelic, testing a theory. His eyes brimming over with unshed tears.

She stared at him, eyes gone soft and vulnerable. "Ali... I..." oh. my. "I love you, too," she replied in the same language.

And then she caught it. "What language was th-".

Her face turned blank, inward, and there was clearly an internal... struggle? conversation? It was hard to tell.

"Gaelic, love." Alistair replied, he gripped her hands and showered them with kisses.

"It's going to be okay, darling. it's going to be okay," he repeated. He let his tears fall as he kissed her forehead and held her.

"We're going to be okay."

"Why us?" Why me. Why this. What's happening to me.

"I don't know, sweetheart." Alistair spoke, " I don't know but my brother Ogma does and he is going to share that knowledge with me. Would you like to join us?"

" Do you have any necessary sessions tomorrow or can you plead off sick?" Alistair asked her. "I think we both need a mental health day or weekend. It's a Friday and I know of a good little place a little ways away from DC."

When she looked up, it was Brigid, not Marie. "That would be wise, I think. Do you know when he intends to be available? And I shouldn't need to be at the various meetings tomorrow. I can plead family emergency." It would even be true.

Marie sort of watched as Brigid spoke, slowly finding an understanding of where her life had been leading. But it would take time.

"I'm going to request he come over to my place for dinner, you are welcome to join us, darling." Dagda murmured.

Alistair smiled knowingly at Marie, "Everything takes time and right now," he said as he got to his feet, " it is far far past time for us to be in bed, love."

Merlot and burgundy like Pinot Noir are good wines to have with Mandarin dishes. You may try prosecco colli berici wine.
