1981 Peter Pettigrew made quite a different choice in 1981. Rather than betraying his closest friends to Voldemort, Peter confessed his regretted Dark Mark to Albus Dumbledore and to the Order of the Phoenix. As a result, when Voldemort came to the Godric’s Hollow on Halloween, he was met with the full force of the Order’s power, which broke his own. At the time, it was thought that Voldemort had been defeated forever. Many Death Eaters were arrested and convicted. Peter was sentenced to Azkaban after confessing to his role in the murders of Marlene McKinnon and Benjy Fenwick. Only Albus Dumbledore and James and Lily Potter knew anything of the prophecy that, years later, would drag their infant son Harry into a conflict much more dangerous than anyone can imagine. Post-War Years The Order of the Phoenix members are hailed as war heroes (though the Order itself remains a secret) but even heroes fade into daily life and the same is true of the Order members. They go about having families and careers, and life is generally good. Harry Potter, never The Boy Who Lives, grows up as a wizard with a happy family, making close friends with Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom as their families enjoy spending time together. Sorcerer's Stone Harry receives his Hogwarts letter and is thrilled to be sorted into Gryffindor with his best mates after a terrifying few minutes where the Sorting Hat suggested he might want to be in Slytherin. Over the course of the year he and Ron make friends with Hermione Granger, and start to realize something very off about the way some Professors are acting. Many major events of the novel happen as they did in canon, and after his final confrontation with Professor Quirrel/Voldemort's, Harry is left with more questions than answers. The only thing that is clear is that Voldemort was not completely destroyed. Chamber of Secrets Strange events around Hogwarts lead to the fear of an old Hogwart's legend, The hidden Chamber of Secrets. Many of the major events of the novel happen as they did in canon, with Harry saving Ginny from the Basilisk and destroying Tom Riddle's diary. With this second attempt by Voldemort to take form, the Order begins to realize that it must mobilize again in the event that he does achieve it. James and Lily begin to consider telling Harry about the Prophecy. Prisoner of Azkaban Weeks before Harry returns to Hogwarts for his third year, rumors of a prison break at Azkaban terrify the general wizarding public. Chief among those who escaped - War Criminal Peter Pettigrew. Over the course of the year, with terrifying dementors around every corner at Hogwarts, Harry learns from his parents and Sirius and Remus the story of Peter's deception, and his eventual regret and confession. Convinced that Peter has broken out of Azkaban for some important purpose, Harry begins trying to find him, and with the use of the Marauder's Map (which James had given him along with his invisibility cloak when he began Hogwarts) eventually tracks him down to the Shrieking Shack. He is able to save him from Remus' accident as a werewolf, and also from the Dementor's Kiss, and learns the secret Peter has risked his life to tell him: Only Harry can destroy Voldemort. Peter is taken away by Sirius to go into hiding, and Harry confronts his parents to find out his role in the fall of Voldemort. James and Lily finally reveal the Prophecy to Harry. Goblet of Fire Reeling from his parent's revelation, Harry barely enjoys the Quidditch World Cup and returns to Hogwarts conflicted, but forgets much of that in the excitement of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Many major events of the novel happen as they did in canon, and in the horror of the final task Cedric Diggory is killed and Harry realizes that Voldemort has finally taken form and began to collect his Death Eaters. Order of the Phoenix When the Ministry will not believe Harry's news of Voldemort's return, despite evidence and the recent escape of many Death Eaters from Azkaban, the Order begins to work in secret to answer the threat and Harry begins to explore in earnest his role in the uncoming war. When the Ministry feels that Albus Dumbledore is a threat, he is removed from the school and replaced with Umbridge, and Harry's 'Dumbledore's Army' rises to challenge her authority. Many major events of the novel happen as they did in canon, and Harry and friends alight to the Ministry toward the end of the year with the idea that if they can find the original prophecy, they might have a better idea of what Harry should be prepared for. Unfortunately, the Death Eaters have the same idea, and in the ensuing battle Peter Pettigrew falls behind the veil in an attempt to shield Harry. Half-Blood Prince The Ministry and Wizarding public are slowly beginning to believe that Lord Voldemort has returned, as disappearances and deaths begin to be more visibly the work of Death Eaters. At Hogwarts, Harry begins to be instructed intensely in the arts he will need, and Albus Dumbledore, now sure of his information, tells Harry about the Horcruxes. Together they go to find the locket, the events there happening much the same as in canon. Harry, at Dumbledore's urging, decides that the rest of the Order, including his parents, cannot know of the Horcruxes, and as the year ends without incident he vows that he will find a way to destroy the remaining shards of Voldemort's soul. Please note here - Draco did not succeed in bringing DEs to Hogwarts, in fact he was never ordered to, and Dumbledore did not die, though he is very much weakened from his experience with the horcruxes. Where Are We Now? Lord Voldemort is still slowly building power, terrorizing muggles and wizards alike. The magical world is in turmoil, and the Order is fighting to stand against the tide of darkness threatening to engulf it. It seems as if Hogwarts might be the only safe place, protected by Albus Dumbledore (though he is beginning to show signs of being injured from the horcrux search) and a host of Order members who do their best to protect the school. What will this year hold? One can only guess. Harry knows one thing - He will find the horcruxes. He has to. |
