Career Information: Becoming an Auror [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:42 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
Training to be an Auror takes three years after leaving Hogwarts; the Aurors ask for a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade. Apart from Defence Against the Dark Arts, the recommended N.E.W.T.s include Charms, Potions (particularly the study of poisons and antidotes), and Transfiguration.

If a candidate for Auror training has the required academic qualifications, he or she must pass a background check for a criminal record, and must pass "a stringent series of character and aptitude tests at the Auror office." These tests assess skill in practical defense, perserverance and dedication, and the ability to react well to stress.

Once accepted to the training program, new recruits begin training at the end of September and work for three years with only holiday breaks. At the end of those three years, those that are left in the program join the Department of Magical Law Enforcement as Aurors.

Let me know if there's anything you think should be added here!

Career Information: Becoming an Unspeakable [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:47 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
In the Department of Mysteries, Unspeakables go about researching some of the deepest mysteries of existence. These wizards have discovered that there is magic that is inherent to the very fabric of existence which manifests itself in ways that are difficult to explain and even more difficult--if not impossible--to control. The Unspeakables explore and experiment with these mysterious forces in various chambers which are clustered around a circular room lined with doors.

Unspeakables need a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade: Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Astronomy, Charms, and History of Magic. Doing well in Potions and Transfiguration is also recommended.

The Department of Mysteries accepts students for beginning their training twice per year. Once in the beginning of August, and once in the beginning of February. There is no formal "school" work for training, but new Unspeakables do undergo a two year internship before being allowed to take on solitary experiments.

There's a lengthy interview and apptitute testing process. People who are interested apply with the Department, and they weed out all but the best and brightest.

It's also probably important to note that this information is highly OOC Knowledge unless you are an Unspeakable yourself, as they're pretty tight-lipped about what it is they do...

Let me know if there's anything you think should be added!

Career Information: Becoming an Obliviator [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:47 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
Obliviators are on the 3rd level of the Ministry; listed under the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes.

Essentially Obliviators are the cover-up group. They wipe Muggles mind to help keep the Magical world simply a figment of the imagination, preserving the thin veil of secrecy that keeps the muggle and wizard worlds safe. There are errors and mishaps, of course. For example, there have been so many sightings of the Loch Ness Monster that some people have managed to ‘escape’. People can also ‘escape’ mass charms, such as things regarding Dark Arts (tornados, Dark Mark sightings, world cup issues, etc).

Typically Obliviators work in teams and can be broken down into sub-teams (also called squad or sub-squads) to tackle problems. In general, they work on rotating shifts so that there is always a squad on call in case of an emergency.

Obliviator hopefuls are required to have five N.E.W.T.s; in Charms (Outstanding encouraged, but Exceeds Expectations accepted), Muggle Studies (Exceeds Expectations), and Transfiguration (Exceeds Expectations). History of Magic is strongly encouraged as well. Applicants must be of legal age and are encouraged to have ‘quick thinking on their feet’.

Any accepted candidate will be given a desk at the Ministry, though depending on level achieved it may have to be shared with people on other shifts.

Let me know if there's anything that should be added here!

Career Information: Becoming a Healer [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:48 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
Loosely based on a medical school type schedule, it takes three years of training at St. Mungo's to become a fully qualified Healer. The training year for Healers begins in August and ends in July, giving students one month free between years.

St. Mungo's asks for a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade: Herbology, Potions (with an emphasis on healing potions and antidotes), Transfiguration, and Charms.

Let me know if there's anything you think should be added here!

Career Information: Becoming a Mediwizard [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:48 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
If Healers are the Doctors of the wizarding medical world, Mediwizards and Mediwitches are the paramedics. St. Mungo's employs and trains many wizards and witches in this career to help assist in roles like sideline assistance at Quidditch games, or to help with triage after emergencies.

For this career, St. Mungo's asks for a minimum of three N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade: Herbology, Potions (with an emphasis on healing potions and antidotes), and Charms.

The training to become a mediwitch or mediwizard is, of course, far less intense than that to become a healer and only requires four months of actual study which can be begun at any time after an application process.

Many who begin their careers this way go on to enter the Healer training program.

Let me know if you think something needs to be added here!

Career Information: Becoming a Cursebreaker [Jul. 4th, 2011|11:49 am]

changedooc

[changedmod]
Gringott's employs Cursebreakers for various jobs from tracking down debtors and people who have defaulted on loans all the way to Indiana Jones type assignments in Pharoh's tombs. They are the bank's means of collections, and of acquiring new revenue.

Generally, they spend a great deal of time working through puzzles that wizards and witches throughout the ages have designed to protect their assets, or to cover their tracks. Think Indiana Jones meets Dr. Robert Langdon of the DaVinci Code.

Academically, Gringott's requires that applicants have at least four NEWTS, requiring Arithmancy, Charms, and DADA.

Training takes three months of "class" work and as long as one year practical experience, depending on how quickly you get things done. Gringott's encourages trainees to take less time.

Cursebreakers can work either in international field offices while on assignment, or will work on location at Gringott's in Diagon Alley. Advanced agents have their choice in their assignments, and can choose not to work in the field or take dangerous assignments. However, the sort of person attracted to this job is also likely to like dangerous assignments.

Let me know if you think something should be added!
