VOLUNTEER SPOTS
VOLUNTEER ONE is READY to wrangle these kids until they are viciously tackled by the giant soccer ball. Ego wounded, they are not 100% sure they’re going to survive the rest of the day.
VOLUNTEER TWO forgot gloves for tie dye, so their hands are now all the colors of the rainbow.
VOLUNTEER THREE agrees to play cornhole, but decides to use the beanbags to pelt the other team instead. VOLUNTEER FOUR puts a stop to this, but also kind of finds it a little bit funny.
VOLUNTEER FIVE is quickly tired of picking up the ‘bowling pins’ knocked over by the kids. They change the rules of the game to reflect that kids have to pick up the pins afterward.
VOLUNTEER SIX is psyched when they get a strike in backyard bowling. But are then less psyched to turn around and see that VOLUNTEER SEVEN saw their victory dance.
VOLUNTEER EIGHT just wants all of the kids to win at Go Fish!, so they help fairly often. Every kid leaves smiling until they run out of prizes and VOLUNTEER NINE has to go steal stickers from somewhere else.
AMITA HAHAM doesn’t want to get wet, but they help fill up all of the water balloons regardless. VOLUNTEER ELEVEN steals a whole bunch of these after the day has started and poor VOLUNTEER TWELVE is caught in the crossfire.
VOLUNTEER THIRTEEN kills it at the obstacle course. COP VOLUNTEER FOURTEEN is thoroughly impressed and talks to them about the police academy
LACEY MORRIS trips over the cord for the inflatable obstacle course and has to apologize a dozen times while it takes several minutes to reinflate, much to the dismay of a line of ANGRY teenagers.
VOLUNTEER SIXTEEN is upset when backyard scrabble is won by a word that is clearly not a word. They trap VOLUNTEER SEVENTEEN into a spelling related lecture.
VOLUNTEER EIGHTEEN thought accepting cakes for the cake walk would be simple. Except now they don’t know which cakes are for the event or which are for the bake sale. They spend half an hour in panic before VOLUNTEER NINETEEN steps in to help.
VOLUNTEER TWENTY thinks the cake walk is dumb, but sells tickets to participate anyway. Their bored expression causes VOLUNTEER TWENTY-ONE to reconsider.
VOLUNTEER TWENTY-TWO is candid about buying their cake from the bakery and redecorating. VOLUNTEER TWENTY-THREE is adamant that this is not allowed. VOLUNTEER TWENTY-FOUR is actually pretty impressed and finds SHANNON ARQUETTE to show off the talent.
VOLUNTEER TWENTY-FIVE and VOLUNTEER TWENTY-SIX collide into each other when VOLUNTEER TWENTY-FIVE didn't notice the music stopped at the cake walk.
VOLUNTEER TWENTY-SEVEN decided to make several dozen cookies to sell, but stumbles into VOLUNTEER TWENTY-EIGHT and tragically drops ALL of their cookies on the ground. VOLUNTEER TWENTY-NINE calls out “five second rule!!” and takes all of the cookies with them anyway, even though they can’t be sold.
VOLUNTEER THIRTY and VOLUNTEER THIRTY-ONE are having pricing conflicts. One is labeling everything too high, the other is labeling everything too low. VOLUNTEER THIRTY-TWO swoops in to save the day with a price sheet.
VOLUNTEER THIRTY-THREE tried one of the cookies from VOLUNTEER THIRTY-FOUR and INSISTS that they’re not homemade. They would know, they buy them from WYNNIE LLEWELYN. EMOTION OF CHOICE at being caught, they return to take the cookies back with them. It’s a donation either way, right? What does it really matter?
VOLUNTEER THIRTY-FIVE left a box of donations outside accidentally and all of VOLUNTEER THIRTY-SIX’S treats are melted.
VOLUNTEER THIRTY-SEVEN knows that this year is going to be their year. They have prepped for this. Except they oversleep this morning and they totally miss the entry for the contest.
VOLUNTEER THIRTY-EIGHT is confused about where to put their cake, so they enter in the contest instead of donating to the cake walk. Whoops!
VOLUNTEER THIRTY-NINE doesn’t want VOLUNTEER FORTY to win--so they sabotage their entry with INGREDIENT OF CHOICE.
When VOLUNTEER FORTY-ONE’S DOG gets out of the house, but uses its nose to track down its owner, VOLUNTEER FORTY-TWO lets the dog into the event. Little did they know, VOLUNTEER FORTY-ONE’S DOG has wandered into the baking contest area. VOLUNTEER FORTY-THREE’S entry has been eaten. :(
MICHELLE ARQUETTE had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they signed up to help with karaoke. Little did they know that there was no relief in sight--no one else signed up to help. They spent the entire event listening to the same songs over and over.
VOLUNTEER FORTY-FIVE pops their head into the room and quickly ducks back out--there’s no way they’re getting trapped into that mess.
VOLUNTEER FORTY-SIX thought that serving snow cones would be the easiest option at this event until they were faced with a line of people twenty deep. By the end of the afternoon, they are exhausted and have vowed not to participate next year.
VOLUNTEER FORTY-SEVEN hopped in to help with snow cones later in the afternoon, but started eating the snow cones instead of giving them to kids.
ROMANTICALLY-INVOLVED VOLUNTEERS FORTY-EIGHT and FORTY-NINE buy each other cotton candy and get into a cotton candy fight. VOLUNTEER FIFTY walks by and tells them to get a room.
VOLUNTEER FIFTY-ONE is stoked to grill hot dogs until they run out of hot dogs. VOLUNTEER FIFTY-TWO insists that they’ll get more, but then they never return. VOLUNTEER FIFTY-THREE saves the day following a run to Carson’s.
The popcorn cart is left alone for a few minutes so MIA BENNETT and VOLUNTEER FIFTY-FIVE decide to fill their own bags. They spend several minutes tossing popcorn at passersby.
VOLUNTEER FIFTY-SIX thinks having the fire truck at the event is a waste of taxpayer dollars and has decided to call the chief to complain.
VOLUNTEER FIFTY-SEVEN has no desire to be caught in the fire truck’s spray, but VOLUNTEER FIFTY-EIGHT drags them under.
VOLUNTEER FIFTY-NINE is in position for the water before the kids are and is eager to cool off given the warmth of the afternoon.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY is in charge of selling raffle tickets and takes their job very seriously. However, they also feel that the raffle would best benefit the community center if the winner donated the winnings back to the center. They make sure that everyone who buys a ticket is well aware of what they would do if they won.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY-ONE spends a whole bunch of money trying to win, but then manages to lose all of their tickets somewhere. VOLUNTEER SIXTY-TWO found them, but thinks it’s funnier to watch VOLUNTEER SIXTY-ONE scramble to find them.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY-THREE was put in charge of picking songs for the event, but VOLUNTEER SIXTY-FOUR snuck a few unexpected choices in at the last minute, managing to Rick Roll the entire event, much to the amusement of VOLUNTEER SIXTY-FIVE.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY-SIX hates SONG OF CHOICE and spends several minutes explaining why to VOLUNTEER SIXTY-SEVEN, who looks confused and somewhat terrified.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY-EIGHT swore they were done with glitter, but now there’s a table, glue, and ample opportunity. They can’t help themselves.
VOLUNTEER SIXTY-NINE thinks the crafts are dumb, but managed to get themselves stuck at this table somehow. They begrudgingly help kids make crafts. They are touched, however, when one of the kids insists that they keep the craft they made together.
NAT ROGERS sees the opportunity to make peacocks crafts and does so--but then starts leaving them all over the community center, waiting for someone to notice that they’re surrounded.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-ONE had no idea what to expect when they walked in the room with the yoga demonstration, but seeing a whole bunch of grandparents in yoga pants was not it. They quickly turn around and head back out.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-TWO manages to steal RONNIE COX’s goat from his demonstration and releases it into the yoga class, loudly announcing ‘GOAT YOGA!!’ before taking off.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-THREE thinks gardening is lame. But then they see that the demo involves planting succulents in tea cups and they are here for it.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-FOUR is tired. They probably shouldn’t have skipped their morning coffee. As they’re listening to the demo, they start to nod off and managed to knock over their bag of dirt all over the floor.
The cooking demo takes a turn when the pan catches fire. Luckily, VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-FIVE grabs the fire extinguisher and saves the day.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-SIX spends the entire cooking demonstration making small comments about how they would change the dish for the better. VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-SEVEN is trying to enjoy the demo--they waffle for a few minutes before telling VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-SIX to SHUT UP.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-SEVEN lost their kid, but MEGAN MARPLE finds them and quickly returns said child to VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-SEVEN.
VOLUNTEER SEVENTY-NINE takes the opportunity to do some murder sleuthing of their own, given that a lot of people are at the event.
SETTING THE SCENE
What's a better way to support the community center and its amazing programs than to spend a Sunday getting to know all about them?
On July 15th, 2018, the community center kicked off its first annual Summerfest at 11 AM both inside and outside. Headed by Basma Saleh, this festival is designed to showcase almost all of the amazing programs that are offered through the community center.
The event is no surprise to the people of Fall City--Basma and her helpers have been hitting up local businesses and contacting frequent volunteers for weeks.
Someone put it well when they said: "Those that can, do. Those that can't, donate."
OUTSIDE
Behind the community center in the grass are many activities for kids. These are staffed by volunteers, but parents are suggested to walk around with their kids. None of the volunteers are expected to babysit.
INSIDE
Inside the community center's main room are booths set up with carnival games and information about the programs offered through the center. There are sign-up sheets to enroll in the programs as well as pamphlets and brochures to allow people to study the offerings in their own time.
Some of the booths have games, some of the booths have crafts, and some have food.
In the center of the room is a large circle with square pieces of paper with numbers on them. They're taped to the floor. At 2 PM, all of the booths stop their games to accommodate the Cake Walk! All of these cakes were donated by volunteers and/or businesses.
Throughout the community center are various rooms--several of them are holding demonstrations. There's a free yoga class (mixed ages), dancing demo, gardening demo, and cooking demo. One of the rooms is playing videos for kids that need to desensitize. Another room has a TV, a karaoke machine, and a tired looking volunteer that has heard You're Welcome from Moana one too many times.
The bake sale started at 11 AM with drop-offs starting at 8 AM. The only requirement was that all of the baked goods were homemade. Please do not purchase baked goods to pass off as homemade. It's very clear that you did not make these cookies when they say 'OREO' on them. Though, they did allow chocolate-dipped confections.
By 5 PM, the baking contest is judged. Anyone was welcome to participate for a small $5 donation. The winner receives a ribbon and $100. This event was sponsored for the prize. Go ahead and roll a d20 to let us know how your character did!
MISCELLANEOUS
Face Painting is available for free with small designs on hands, cheeks, etc. Larger designs are available for donations. Kids can have full-face paint with a parent present to provide permission.
Right out front of the community center is a modest photo booth for people to take pictures and use a witty hashtag mentioning Summerfest.
50/50 raffle tickets are being sold one for $1, three for $2, seven for $5, and an arm's length for $20.
At the end of the festival, once all the outdoor games have been put away, the Fall City fire department brings one of its fire trucks for the kids to see. They get to meet 'real live' fire fighters. About thirty-minutes before closing, the fire truck sprays its hose for the kids to play in. Have fun taking home your soaking-wet children, parents!
FOOD
Inside, there's a popcorn cart offering small bags of buttered, salted popcorn for those perusing the booths. After seeing that popcorn cart, a volunteer brought over their cotton candy machine and began passing out cotton candy for modest donations.
Outside you can find a grill serving up hot dogs for 'whatever you feel is fair' donations. They also have water coolers set up with water, lemonade, kool-aid, and gatorade. There are bags of chips available for $1.00.
Around 1 PM, a volunteer set up the Snow Cone machine with several different flavors. And at 4 PM, the ice cream truck came and parked in the parking lot to offer ice cream at discounted prices for everyone participating in the event.
