Someone told me a joke once. Three men are stranded on an island. Starving, exhausted, afraid, on the verge of insanity. One day, one of the men happens across a magical lamp hidden deep in the warm sand. The genie resting inside grants each of them a single wish. The first wishes to return to his wife and children, and then he disappears into a puff of smoke. The second wishes to see his home once more, and POOF, he vanishes. The third man, realizing he's now alone on his island, panics and cries, "I wish for my friends to come back!"

Womp womp. Everyone laughs.

Why are humans so afraid of being alone? Fear is a healthy, natural evolutionary defense mechanism. It makes us stronger lifeforms. More cautious, more cerebral. It causes us to adapt to our environment. To overcome obstacles. If you're frightened of a vicious beast, you make a weapon to fight it. If you're afraid of a society, you create war to stifle it. If you're afraid of the world, you make a bomb to destroy it. If you're afraid of death...well...there's an answer to that, too.

No one's ever quite figured out how to challenge the fear of being alone. Any sane, logical, human being can tell you that there's nothing to actually fear. There is nothing in the dark that isn't there in the light. No creatures in the closet. No monsters under the bed.

Then why do humans still have this fear? Why is it programmed into them, beckoning them to listen even when they know with such certainty that there isn't any reason to worry? It isn't the simple thought of "I'm alone", or realizing you are alone that causes such fear. The simple act of being without company isn't a terrifying thing on its own. It's the quiet voice in the deep recesses of your mind that whispers back, "How can you know for sure?".

Perhaps, once in a while, someone must think that they're alone when they're not.

Maybe there are monsters underneath someone's bed.

Anybody know a good seafood place in town? I've got a serious hankering. Bonus points if it a Cajun style.

Wonderful to come home and find that some little assholes have apparently been tagging your building like they own it for the past five years.

Nothing has ever made me feel like such an old fucking geezer than walking into The Counter for dinner, singing along to some quality Red Hot Chili Peppers (because why the hell wouldn't I), and hearing the two hot college girls behind you complain about the "grandpa music".

I hit youtube when I got home to check out the Billboard Top 50 for shits and giggles. That was a mistake. Well, except for the one music video where it looked like a girl was getting terrorized by putties. No fucking clue what was going on, but PUTTIES.

Also, what the hell is Stanky Leg?

Somebody find the people who thought this and this up so I can marry them fucking immediately. To each other. So they can develop new, wonderful bacon monstrosities together and pass the gift onto their hopefully copious childrens.

Two ladies came in today inquiring about vintage shoes. When I explained that I've never dealt in shoes from any era (although I suppose that in certain cases there might be a value in historical footwear), they became... strangely aggressive.

Apparently Manolos from the mid-90s in the correct style are very valuable. Shockingly, I've decided to continue to focus on antiquities.

But now I'm curious. What do you collect?

Cole is now officially a sad, sad puppy dude. They closed down my favorite coffee shop over the weekend. Once the manly sobbing subsides I'm gonna need a replacement joint for my caffeine fix. Anybody got any ideas?
