Baby Blues
WHO: Blake Hayward & Jon Randell WHERE: Infirmary WHEN: Y2002, Nov 30
A month had past, a whole month since Blake had spoken to her mother who on their last meeting made her position quite clear about the pregnancy. It had destroyed her, their relationship and the only thing that kept the young doctor going was her baby of which was now showing.
Worries piled on her already troubled shoulder; bringing the baby to term was difficult enough, having her mother not supporting made it harder and then there was the whole relationship with Jon; she had no real idea how he would be when his baby arrived. It was a mess but one of her own making and choosing.
Putting aside the woes of the day; Blake found herself on the opposite side of her profession; the side which made her a patient – some say that was the wrong side to be on. Blake lay in her gown on some infirmary bed waiting behind a closed screen for her doctor; a friend she trusted and knew had the relevant skills to deliver this baby. She had her hands clasped over her chest while her eyes looking up at the ceiling.
Today was just a scheduled check-up, to see how junior was doing and how Blake was doing; she had been through a rough month and she knew it strained her relationship with Jon; probably why he wasn’t there with her now; for the medical exam. Thing was; she had been saying to herself all morning it was the right decision to do this herself but now, lying there looking up at the infirmary ceiling she knew it was the wrong one. She wanted him here, now with her for this.
The screen brushed open and in stepped the physician; her friend and colleague that was also part of Avalon’s medical personal. She lifted her head and offered her smile to the younger but more experienced practitioner. “Hi”
“Hi B, how are we today?” She smirked while putting on her latex gloves.
Blake breathed deep and nodded, a hand running over her enlarged stomach area, “We are good…thanks” She half heartedly tried to hide the attempt she made to look over her friends shoulder and out into the rest of the infirmary, hoping to see Jon there.
“B, where is Jon?” Her friend had the medical gloves on and was moving closer in both physical and emotional territory. She was a friend and knew that this baby was Jon’s whereas most of the ship personnel thought it someone random from Blake’s home colony.
Her head lay back down and she sighed; “He isn’t coming…I don’t thing he ever was.”
