It begins
WHO: Captain Jilleen Simmons
WHEN: Y2002 Nov 29
WHERE: 1st CEF Command Headquarters, Tawa, Saggittaron
“That will be all, Captain.” The admiral dismissed his aide before he started his meeting with his ground commanders in the conference room.
Jilleen closed the door behind her and then went to her desk to make a few calls on behalf of the admiral. The title of aide-de-camp looked good on her record, but it was mostly a glorified executive assistant. It was also the best opportunity for further advancement.
At her desk she glanced at the flat screen monitors on the wall of the office that played muted local and inter-colony news channels with close-captions at the moment. The Saggitaron news channel was preparing the audience for a news conference that would take place on Tauron soon between the Prime Ministers of the two colonies. Jilleen briefed the Admiral earlier about the meeting between the two heads of government and the trade agreement each would sign after the press conference. It was not a surprise. It had been in the works for months.
Jilleen unmuted the local newscast but kept the volume low enough to not interfere with the calls she was going to make.
“… the prime ministers are at the podiums now, so we will listen to what they have to say,” said the male news anchor. The screen focused on the Prime Minister of Tauron. “I would like to say that we had a very productive meeting…”
She hardly paid attention to the two elected leaders when they answered the questions from the journalist, while she spoke with Admiral’s pilot about tomorrow’s flight to one of the peace keepers posts on the southern continent. About halfway through the questioning the screen went blank with white noise, which got Jilleen’s attention for a brief moment until it changed back to the anchor desk. “It seems we lost the feed and our engineers are working on reconnecting, in the meantime …” She returned to make the next call on her list.
On the line, she waited as her call forwarded to a civilian government official. She glanced at the television screen again and then noticed a change of the anchor’s expressions. She increased the volume of the television as classic music continued to play on the hand set while she was on hold.
“… We are trying to get confirmation on that, but the Tauron News Service is reporting that the building has partially collapsed. We do not yet know of the status of Prime Minister Lauder …” Jilleen immediately disconnected the hold call and then pressed the speed dial to Intelligence office.
“This is Captain Simmons,” she said into the hand set after it was picked up on the other end. “What’s the situation on Tauron?” She listened as the intelligence officer gave her a quick report. A minute later, “There was more than one explosion?” She asked. After he confirmed it, Jilleen mumbled “frak.” She immediately recognized the impending crisis. It was soon after that she went to interrupt the Admiral’s meeting with the news from Tauron.
