Set course to Tauron
WHO: Jon Randell & Thomas Burk
WHEN: Evening Y2002, Dec 1
WHERE: CIC Avalon
Jon was looking up at the DRADIS screen over the command table in CIC when the wall of tempered glass panel doors rotated open. Rear Admiral Burk and the new CAG, Major Taylor, entered CIC between the doors from the passageway.
The Executive office looked directly toward the commanding officer. “Sir, you’re just in time, the Paladin and Luxor are moving into position to fire on the target,” He reported. The escort ships of Avalon’s battlestar group were conducting live fire training on an orbiting moon of a large red gas giant. Two escort destroyers were setting up to fire their main batteries on the target area.
“Tell them to hold.” Admiral Burk handed his XO a slip of paper with new orders. “And then get a message out to other ships to stand by. I will make an announcement shortly.” The Admiral turned to the CAG to give the major new instructions, while his XO made the call to the battle group. Burk also ordered navigation to plot a FTL jump to Tauron, which in self was only used on occasion for training due to cost. FTL jumps for capital ships had to be approved by the fleet.
After a few more minutes, the communication specialist informed them that the other ships were ready to receive. With a nod from the Admiral, Jon picked up his hand set and pressed transmit. “Attention, attention, all ships and crews of the ninety-third battlestar group, stand by for a message from the commanding officer.”
Burk picked up a hand set from his side of the table. After a deep breath, he spoke. “This is Rear Admiral Thomas Burk, after twenty-three hundred training will cease. We have orders to proceed to Tauron via FTL jump and rendezvous with eleven other battlestars in orbit. We have been given the honor to represent the Colony of Aerilon during the memorial services for the late Prime Minister Fahn who was killed in the terrorist attack on the twenty-ninth.
“Governor Simmons and Admiral Elliot will join us during the parade of ships. This is rare event in which a battlestar from each colony will attend the memorial service of a fallen state leader and hero of the last Cylon war. Our expected stay at Tauron is five days. Aerilon command has gracefully promised a 48 hour liberty call for the crews after the memorial service, but we are to remain respectful for the Tauron’s lost.
“As for the news of the bombing itself, as of today, four hundred and seven are confirmed dead, sixty-one remain missing and presumed deep inside the collapsed building. An investigation is still on going to find those responsible for this cowardly act of terrorism. Most have heard the rumors and conspiracy theories by now, I say disregard them because I will not tolerate fighting among the crew. Whoever carried out this act intended to open old wounds and provoke mistrust. Once the facts are known, those responsible will be hunted down … I let your imagination fill in the rest.
“That’s all.”
Burk then hung up the hand set. The Admiral was from Tauron, and he had his own ideas about who may have been responsible for the dual assassinations and bombing, but he kept that to himself for the moment. It was not the time or place for theories. He was not the only Tauron to think Capricans were involved. The Tauron news service hinted as much and many Tauron blogs outright said so. Things could get out of hand, and ugly real fast if the rumors were not controlled or worst confirmed.
Jon had a different opinion. It was karma. Sagittaron was still a fractured colony, and there were still those who did not forgive easy. His theory was it was payback for the assassination of Tom Zarek two years ago. Whatever was the motive, a few riots had already occurred on Sagittaron over the death of their Prime Minister. Nothing new really, it happened before, and will happen again. Jon could care less, he was only born to the colony, but he was raised on Geminon, another frakked up colony.
