Vampires and Lycans are not mystical creatures, but rather the product of a virus that killed most of the people and spread rapidly through people. The virus is very similar, but makes two different types of creatures. Vampires need blood to survive, and cannot go out into the sun. Lycans change shape with the full moon, turning into werewolves, though older werewolves can change shape whenever they please. Both are very nearly immortal, living to old age, hundreds of years old.
Since that time, a war has broken out. The Lycans were enslaved by the Vampires, used as indentured servants to be the guardians of their lairs during the daylight hours, but they revolted during the Middle Ages. Both sides have their own lair and chain of command. Vampires have Death Dealers, vampire warriors charged to fight and kill the Lycan enemy. There are three elders, rules and tradition demand two be at rest while one is awake; this arrangement calls for each elder to rule for one century followed by two centuries of sleep.
Our story takes place in Siberia, far in the deep remote recesses of Russia. Both vampires and lycans have lived there through the centuries, keeping relatively quiet. When the Lycans revolted in the Middle Ages, it didn't reach them well until at least 50 years after the revolt started happening. Eventually though lycans did revolt, and Siberia has been the home to a secret war ever since. However the war has been fairly quiet for the past 90 years (ever since the building of the Trans Siberian railroad), a sort of truce drawn between the two.
That is because the human population has slowly been dwindling, and that means a lack of food. But the truce is about to be severed completely. One of the vampires was murdered, and their body put on display very cruedly in the middle of the human public. There is an outrage from the humans to find the killer, and the vampires are certain that lycans did it. Whether they did or not, it doesn't matter. Blood is about to spill from both ends.
