He felt ridiculous, but after the brief exchange with Boyd, he walked down to Central Park until he came across one of the balloon vendors. Go big or go home. He bought half a dozen balloons and tried to keep from cringing on the trek back to Bellum Letale. Idly, he wondered if Boyd was being truthful and he mentally shrugged: if she really was ugly, then this would be a great bar story or a life lesson or something like that. At a minimum, only $8.50 spent so far.
Once back at his apartment, he let the balloons drift up to the ceiling, their long shining ribbon strings dangling like a bead curtain in his kitchen. Stripping out of his clothes, he started signing Johnny Cash under his breath as he began his pre-date routine: shower; shave; a nice cologne, nothing too overpowering; and a suit. For tonight, he decided to forgo the tie and jacket, opting instead for a fitted sweater. Casual but comfortable, no pressure.
Since this was New York and not LA, Jack went down to Boyd's floor a few minutes before nine rather than waiting the West Coast requisite thirty minutes. Boyd also seemed the type to care about when he arrived, too, so there was no point in souring the evening so early on. Not when he had gone to such lengths to amuse her.
At the door, he knocked, holding the balloons in his right hand, low enough for them to be obviously seen when she opened the door; and he waited -- with not an insignificant amount of anticipation -- to see the woman in the flesh.
