He had chased the thug through the darkened alleyway and up the rickety fire escape to the rooftop. Gun at the ready, Sargent Gordon prowled the empty roof of the abandoned building, searching for any sign of where the villain might have gone.

He crossed the rooftop and veered toward the single smokestack that stood alone on the rooftop. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Gordon fell to one knee, rocked by a hard blow to the back of his head. Jim Gordon staggered sideways as he tried to right himself. A dark shape loomed in front of his face and knocked him backwards toward the edge of the roof. One push and Gordon felt himself sailing backwards over the ledge. Wind swirled around him as he plummeted into the darkness and Sargent Gordon’s life passed before his eyes.

It all happened so fast, but somehow he knew that this was the end. Then blackness enveloped him and strong arms held him as they glided soundlessly to the alleyway below. Jim’s breathing was harsh and he kept his eyes closed tightly until he felt the ground solid beneath his feet once more.

He opened his eyes slowly and looked into soft black orbs that glittered with concern. He let out his breath, gasping, "Batman… I thought I was a goner."

He clung tightly to the masked man who stroked his face gently with a gloved hand. Batman pulled him closer, brushing his lips across the older man’s lips and whispered into his mouth, "I’ll never let you fall."
