May 10: Greeting the new Hand
Who: Jaehaerys Targaryen, William Stark
When: May 10, before the final rounds
Rating: PG
Status: Ask before joining

Jaehaerys allowed the young Fossoway boy to fuss with the fastenings of his shoulder plate and kept his thoughts on the words before him.  The parchment had come by a raven, and the king smiled as he read Tyrith Lannister’s bold script: the game was afoot. His message to the Tullys had been received and now to speak with the Baratheons… and of course Lord Stark. His Hand’s retinue had approached the city not long ago, as the Master of Whispers had been kind enough to inform him- they did have so much catching up to do.

One of the Kingsguards near the door turned, catching Jaers’ attention. The sentry outside spoke and the king smiled. Ah, a visitor. “Let him pass,” Jaehaerys ordered as he waved away his squire. “Bring us wine,” he ordered the boy as an afterthought. “Arbor gold- nothing too strong. I’ll need my wits about me if I’m facing Tybalt Lannister today.”

He turned back to the door to greet his guest.

William felt both relieved and apprehensive about arriving in King's Landing. On one hand, he was sick of traveling. The constant getting up and going from dawn until dusk on the road could drive even the most stable man insane. And no matter the number of guards and knights, his family was always at risk out in the open. At least behind the walls of the Keep he trusted his family would be protected. But the splinters were already beginning to show. Kaelyn had continued her cold treatment of him, icing over more and more as they approached the walls of the city. They'd hardly entered the castle when she'd hustled off in another direction, leaving him to attend the King alone.

He should have expected that.

And already he felt the weight of this place on his shoulders. Where before he ruled as regent, now he had assumed the role of the Hand of the Targaryen's. William hadn't quite convinced himself King's Landing was where he wanted to be. The relationship between the Starks and the Targaryens had been shaky at best when he'd left, even though he'd willingly and gladly handed Jaehaerys the crown. He favored the North - all Starks did - and he'd eagerly headed home.

That and he had no idea why the young King had chosen him, a man who had sat the iron throne in place of the Targaryen's. In truth, he suspected that Jaehaerys did not trust him. That this was a way of keeping him close and under control, even though William knew he hadn't desired leaving the north. The rest of the kingdom was better off in someone else's hands.

He stepped through the door at the word of the Sentry and immediately faced Jaehaerys. He bowed in respect as appropriate and waited for the younger man to address him.

Jaehaerys inclined his head in acknowlegement of William's bow, then grinned. "My Lord Hand, how was your journey? I hope the weather treated you well- spring can be a treacherous time of year." He motioned to the page to offer a cup of wine to his guest.

"Your presence has been much missed," he said as the boy approached Stark, "especially by your lady sister, and daughter. Though it's hard to tell with Elixabet- she smiles so rarely." He paused and chuckled, raising his glass to William. "You're a lucky man my lord- one daughter for thought and one for laughter. Too many girls are a mixture of both."

The young King was friendly - almost too friendly. William pushed aside his natural doubt. Jaehaerys offered his trust; William should to the same. He accepted the glass of wine and took a short sip. "The journey was long but uneventful.I cannot complain." Unless you count my wife. But William had no intentions of discussing his marriage with Jaehaerys.

"I admit I cannot wait to see my daughter or my sisters. Their presence was as much missed in Winterfell as you indicate mine was here." Although, he was used to Lily being gone. "I am lucky to have two beautiful daughters at all," William agreed, "Have you had much time to get to know Elixabet then?"

He hadn't wanted to leave her at court, and he truly missed her. Her frigid air was nothing unexpected from the North. "After we finish our wine and our talk, I would like to dine with my family tonight."

"I'm glad it wasn't so long as it might have been- my mother was worried that our letters would not reach you until you'd already reached Winterfell. I told her not to fret of course." Jaehaerys offered a conspiratorial smile, "I knew the ravens wouldn't lose you so easily."

Sisters? Oh, that was right, Tyrith's lady wife was a Stark. Jaehaerys took a sip of wine and pondered that bit of information again. "Ah, Elixabet?" Jaehaerys shook his head. "No, I know her only by sight. I'm afraid we've never spoken. She's a very quiet maid, your eldest. Rather like my dear cousin Aenyris of late- perhaps it runs in the family."

Jaehaerys nodded in understanding of William's wishes. "Of course- a quiet evening for you then, but on the morrow we'll feast to celebrate your your return, your new status as Hand of the King..."

The king glanced to the doorway before he stepped closer to William. "And of course there's the new alliance, and my intended bride."

William noted the reference to their shared heritage, though he made no comment. Instead, he focused on the latter of Jaehaerys words. "A feast is more honor than I need, but I am grateful none the less. I assume the rest of the nobility is already here for your tournament?" He took another sip of wine - the vintage was delicious - feeling slightly more at easy with the openness Jaehaerys was displaying.

"You are engaged then?" William asked. The news was only slightly surprising; it made sense for the King to have a queen. "With who?"

"Nonsense, Lord William. You deserve a great deal of honor- you have been our most excellent and loyal ally in this mess." Jaehaerys waved away William's modesty with a laugh. "And the court always wants any excuse to gorge itself on sweets and wine."

His grin took on a mischievous light. "I'm not engaged- at least not yet. Who knows, the lady may refuse me." He took a sip of wine, his thoughts moving back to the Riverlands. "My mother wants to ally Dorne with the Riverlands, and has sent Lord Perceval an offer with Princess Elia's hand in marriage to seal the arrangement... Unfortunately, Princess Elia's hand is not going to be available, nor is Lord Tully's eldest son. I've suggested my cousin Aenyris as the match for the heir to Riverrun."

"The Stark's duty is to serve the crown and the North," William reminded the King. "Being loyal should be expected, not celebrated." But William remembered well enough the court's desire to be feasted. The Stark's might value their loyalty, but William wasn't naive enough to forget that many others had to be bought. Land or gold, women or status, each man had his price. "But a celebration would be welcome. I'm sure my family would enjoy your hospitality." All but Kaelyn.

He continued to drink the wine; he hadn't indulged much during their travels and even William could fine a weak spot for arbor grown grapes. He hadn't been gone long, but already William had let the political unrest of the land slip through his mind like sand falling through fingers. Fast at first, then slower still, until only a few grains remained speckled across his fingers. "Your cousin would please the Tully's, I'm certain," William mused, wondering how much had changed in the short time he was gone. The realm had hardly been stable when he'd left, but change could happen faster than a storm in Shipbreaker Bay. "You might enlighten your new Hand on the politics he's missed recently. Why the Martells and the Tully'?" Why not the dangerous Tyrells or the unsettled Arryns?

Jaehaerys shrugged at William's words. "It doesn't hurt to reward expected behavior- it makes a ruler seem appreciative and it might keep the troublemakers too drunk to be efficient." He chuckled. "Give your family my regards- especially Genna. The Keep has been much less colorful without her artful hand." One of the council rooms still bore the marks of several children bearing paint, though Aeria had hung the room with tapestries to hide the worst of it.

"Aenyris would please any thinking man, and the trade offers I'll add to the bargain will help keep them sweet as well." Jaehaerys moved to face a table laid with a map of Westeros. "My mother wants to solidify our realm against the Tyrells- the flowers are overrunning their garden, she thinks. She blames them for my father's death, William..." Jaehaerys sighed, sadness creeping into his voice as he thought again of Paegon and the dark times that had come after.

"I can't let her rush the kingdom to a war in some quest for vengeance. I will speak with Lord Arryn and with Lord Baratheon- I believe Lord Cedric is dealing with raiders and will appear at court before too long. But for Lord Arryn... I wonder if he would stir from his Eyrie even if all the realm was on fire."

William had to agree; Jaehaerys had a good point. "There will always be troublemakers unfortunately, but I hope none rear their heads while I sit beside you." As Jaehaerys hand, he'd be expected to root them out, expected to exact the King's justice, expected to keep the realm in control. Often, William mused, the Hand's responsibilities were more than the King's. "But you speak true when most can be pacified by spirits and sport." He finished off his wine, and motioned for the page to take his glass. He would not have another, unless Jaehaerys insisted. In King's Landing, it served well to keep ones wits intact.

He laughed as the King spoke of his daughter and her creative hobbies. "I'm sure she'll find something to get into before the week is out. She's pleased to be back; she likes the Keep, or maybe she just likes to color it." A good sign, he thought to himself, if the King favored his children. The uncertainty that filled him when he'd entered was slowly seeping away, but William was never one to vanquish his doubts too quickly.

"Her anger is understandable," William acknowledged, "But we cannot blame the Tyrell's if we have no proof. I assume Your Grace will want the investigation intoKing Paegon's death continued?" He knew the answer, but better to hear the words directly. "Lord Arryn has always been a man of the Eyrie, you know that, you squired there. I'm not sure he will leave, but he might send his son if you inquire. Have you thought to bring the Tyrells to court directly?" Always a risk to have your enemies close, if they were indeed enemies, but in the city gates, they could be watched. In the garden they were just dangerous.

"Too late to hope for that, I fear. I've heard from Polonius that the Greyjoys are stirring on Pike- that's a quarter from which naught but trouble ever seems to come." Jaehaerys frowned. "Have you heard anything from your bannermen of reavers or the like?" Truthfully it could have been some internal strife, but whenever the Master of Whispers brought tidings that so much as one extra ship was in the Greyjoys' harbor, it was best to be wary.

"As for the Tyrells- Selester received the invitation to our merriment but sent only his regrets. I mislike the lack of Tyrells- their bannermen have come or at least those not on the Dornish marches." He sighed, "Even if their plots amount to nothing more than an attack on Dorne's northern border, it may be enough to send the whole kingdom into war. I have sent a message to Lord Arryn, offering him a position on the Council- I hope even if he will not take the bait, that his son might."

Jaehaerys looked at the map before them. "What would you suggest, my lord Stark? What would bring you hence, if you were our fat friend, Selester Tyrell?"

Just hearing the Greyjoys were on the move left William to shudder. Stories of the past, of the Iron Born burning the halls of Winterfell and cutting a swath of destruction through the north, while the King of the North Robb Stark led his armies south, still rung through the rebuild towers of his Northern home. The Starks didn't like leaving Winterfell; the past was reason enough. "I have heard nothing yet, Your Grace, but I haven't been home in some time. I can send a raven to the Flints and the Glovers, and see if they've seen any krakon's about."

He considered the King's question. "His presence could be both a curse and a blessing. On one hand, his plotting will be hampered if your spies are all about him. Keeping him close keeps him under control. Yet, I dislike the thought of him roaming your halls. If he did indeed serve your father his death, he has more connections than we may know. Tournaments and merriments didn't bring him from the reach." He paused, in thought. He hadn't spoken much with the Tyrells while he was king, but he knew they opposed his accent to the throne. "Every man has something he wants. It would do us well to find out what stirs his interest."

Suddenly he wished his glass was filled. He'd been in King's Landing less than an hour and already politics had given him a headache. He motioned to the page and requested his glass returned and filled. "I suppose it was too much to expect this job would be easy. You've allied the Riverlands and Dorne; Selester may believe your choosing sides. If his ambition has driven him to do as your mother believes, he may well find reason to strike before his position grows weaker. Send him a message. Invite him to court. Say you wish to assure him his position is strong and this alliance is no threat to him. If that doesn't stir him from the garden, then it's fair to assume he doesn't trust you or that he's pulling his allies against you." The page stepped up with the wine and William took another drink. "And I, for one, hope Arryn's son takes your offer."

William had no wish to see his old mentor again.

Jaehaerys nodded. "Send them a raven- see if there's anything they might tell you. I would rather not be given any surprises by the krackens."

He thought of Selester Tyrell and he tilted his head as he looked back at William. "Your younger sister was married to one of the fat flower's sons, and he married another to a Bolton. He wanted allies in the North, though your sister's gone- perhaps he might want to renew the ties. I'll see if Polonius can get him word of your considering a Southron suitor for Lyanora or Elix."

Jaehaerys studied his gauntlets, carefully pulling the right one on, though he still left the cumbersome left on the table. "I will invite him to court- the quarrel I'm about to have with my mother ought to help reassure him that I might be amiable towards him. I imagine she's going to be rather livid when she finds out her plans for Elia's marriage to Lord Tully's son are going to fall through."

He looked up with a grin as William expressed his home that Arrys Arryn would see reason. "Did they send you off to the Eyrie too? I had to squire for his lordship. Most boring years of my life, if you don't count all the time I spent dodging those harpies he calls daughters."

"I will send them in the morning," William confirmed. He'd have his steward pen the letters and give them to the Maester for the birds. "And I used to have more faith in the Tyrells until they sealed their vows with the Boltons. But Celia's death was enough to make me more than suspicious of the flowers. I think Selester might be playing more games than I ever realized, either that he so unsure of his position he's tossing his lot at whoever will bite. Or perhaps he trusts those around him even less than the Northern men." William and Celia hadn't been as close as his other siblings. She was a few years shy of Lyanora, but had been so unlike Lya she hardly spent time with the rest of them. She'd spent her days dreaming of gowns and balls and children and needlework, and William had wed her off young (like the rest of them) because he knew that was what she wanted. She hadn't quite fit in the north, so when Selester had asked for her hand for his son, William hadn't a reason to say no. With Lili in the South as well and an wedded alliance with Tullys, William had managed to spread his family across the kingdom. Or at the very least he'd finished what his father had started.

He shuddered at the thought of sending another of his family to Highgarden, but if anyone was up to the task, Lyanora could hold her own. "I will consider another marriage with them, but only on the grounds they are cleared of your father's demise. I couldn't place another sister in danger, and while Celia was so much younger than me, she was still a sister I loved."

The king was speaking in circles, or maybe it was the wine, but William was certain Jaehaerys had just contradicted himself. "The Martells are not going to wed the Tullys?" he questioned, certain he'd heard one of the comments wrong. Or had his short time away from King's Landing already dulled his political senses?

"My father sent me there when I young to ward with Randall, but he grew cross when his parade of daughters sparked little interest in me." The king knew full and well that William was married to an Arryn, and William left the rest of the story up to his youthful imagination.

"Boltons?" Jaehaerys blinked at that news. He'd known one of Selester's sons married a girl from a more minor house but someone from the Dreadfort? Was Selester drunk when that arrangement was made, or has Highgarden found a taste for flayed men? "That's a strange match, and one that I'd mislike if I were you as well."

He shook his head. "I won't advise you to actually marry them off- just look for suitors. No need to sign anything, is there? Polonius can send the rumor and you can nod your head and plead that you're too fond to see them go so far away." Close enough to truth in any case, Jaehaerys thought.

Jaehaerys' grin took on a wolfish look, or perhaps his dragon blood was showing. "No, the Martells will not wed the Tullys. I'm afraid my mother's going to find that Elia's hand is already taken. It's time we had a new queen, and one with her share of the blood of the dragon."

He raised his brow at William's opinion of Lord Arryn's daughters- Perhaps the lady Kaelyn had been a better actress in her youth than she was now. Or had some other hidden talents. "Poor Lord Arryn- I'm sure he'll find someone to wed his darling girls..." He turned thoughtful. "Perhaps one of them could lead my uncle on a merry enough chase to take him from his melancholy."

"The Boltons and I have never seen eye to eye; I imagine they were pleased to worm they way into Selester's garden. You are right it displeased me, but I left it for the wind until the day Celia died." The Boltons were more his problem than the King's, but then, any allies of the Tyrells might well bring more steel against Jaehaerys. Even so, they were speculating. "Send your rumors and we will see what comes of it. Elixabet needs a husband, although I'd rather send her off to the riverlands in place of the Martells than to High Garden. Let her wed Tully's heir, else you might him displeased with you as well. Or please Randall by suggesting he send the falconettes off to parade again."

Lyanora needed a husband as well, but William kept silent on that. His sister's bastard child had left her soured in the eyes of the court, and he doubted she'd be pleased if he were to bargain her off so easily.

"So Elia is to be our queen?" Will asked, slightly shocked. Jaehaerys was wedding his Aunt? Then again, the Targaryens were keen for family. "Congratulations, Your Grace."

Jaehaerys' eyes darkened as he thought on the stories he'd heard of the Dreadfort. "I'll have to ask Polonius what he knows of this latest crop of Boltons, and of that particular alliance." The Boltons were Old Guard, if he remembered. Very old. Still worshipping trees and keeping a flayed man as their sigil. The Starks prayed at trees too, but wolves didn't skin their enemies.

His gaze lightened as William mentioned a Tully marriage for Elix. "That's not a bad idea- and I don't think your daughter would do half badly at Riverrun. She and Aenyris might keep one another company. I'll need some news to cheer up Aeny after I tell her she's not taking a dragon to the Riverlands." Jaehaerys took another drink. "She's not going to like that idea."

He smiled at William's congratulations. "Yes, my aunt. I'd have chosen differently but..." Jaehaerys trailed off and sipped his wine. "I'm going to need a queen I can trust, and I need to strengthen the blood ties with the Tullys who are fresh out of daughters. I figure I'll bribe Rhaeys into taking a stag to bed sometime- or a flower if Selester has one available. Blasted roses breed more like rabbits."

“They have always had eyes on the North,” William mused. He did not like thinking about the Boltons and yet, was forced to do so often. Nothing positive had ever come out of the Dreadfort. The Boltons were always pressing the Starks, always looking to make a move. He’d been fighting the political battles with them from the day he’d been made Lord of Winterfell, and Eva’s death had served to strain relations more than their marriage had mended. “Between the Boltons and the Grayjoys, Winterfell’s eyes are always open.”

At least he could find a suitable match for his daughter. “Elixabet would be happy in Riverrun. The Tully’s are a good family, and we have strong ties already. My brother is wed to a Tully. I’d rather see her there then off in the Vale or in Highgarden. Let Selester chew on that alliance as well.” He laughed at Jaehaerys words, so very true, and nodded in agreement. “Don’t forget the Lannisters either. My nieces and nephews are growing up quickly, and Tywin was never one to pass up an opportunity.”

"You have Boltons and Greyjoys, and I the Baratheons and Tyrells. We're blessed with bannermen so dutiful they put themselves out trying to keep our eyes watchful and our swords sharp." Jaehaerys sighed. "Too bad you can't spare a few Boltons or Greyjoys to keep Cedric and Selester occupied... I do wonder how much Selester knew about his gooddaughter's family. Flaying doesn't seem much his style."

The sound of crashing wood and metal outside reminded him of the joust and he chuckled as a cheer went up. So many games. "I confess I don't know your neice Toria as well as I'd like, but she's friends with Elia. In truth I'm surprised your goodbrother has never put her forward, but Tyrith always has his reasons... but he has raised a formidable young knight in Tybalt." Jaehaerys looked thoughtful. "I'm still short a kingsguard- I wonder if Tyrith can spare a son."

"I can hope the Greyjoys will keep Selester occupied, rather than come North. The Boltons never stop pressing, and they only pretend to be assuaged. I won't lie and say I haven't wished the plague had wiped out their house." The plague had been one of the darker points of his regency. "Selester wanted alliances, I don't think he cared with whom. Anyone he thought might extend Highgardens influence. You know how vulnerable the Tyrells feel when the Martells have a queen by the Iron Throne. Expect him to be worse when you announce your betrothal."

William was a bit surprised that Tyrith hadn't been pushing his daughter to match Jaehaerys. The Lannisters had always struck him as ambitious. Lily was an attempt to keep the long standing feud between Starks and Lannisters in check, and William felt his father had actually been successful. William liked both his nephews, and both liked Brandon. That didn't mean William liked Tyrith. "Tybalt would make a good knight for you. Do you think Tyrith will accept the loss of his heir?"

"Ah, winter can be harsh," Jaehaerys laughed. He found himself rather liking William Stark- which might be a problem, but perhaps not so much of one. If he died the man was likely to end up on his throne again unless Rhaeys made a better showing than he had the last time. Was it better to like your usurper or hate him? "But the gods must have spared them for a purpose. If Highgarden wants a return to the Old Ways, perhaps we should support them. The maesters tell me history is an important thing."

Jaehaerys' smile was wry. "I'd mollify Selester but I haven't a clue what the old man wants. He can have Rhaeys, and then he can scheme until my uncle takes the throne and I am dead. It would be an amicable arrangement I think.

As for Tyrith, I think he'd not mind. He has two more sons, and I have heard him threaten to disown the lot and leave Casterly to your neice."

"We are always prepared for Winter," William mused. The Stark words served to remind not only his family, but all of the seven kingdoms, of the cruel nature of winter. "Surely you jest. The Boltons are bad enough, I don't wish to see them spreading their whips about the rest of the kingdom." Once at a boy, William had seen a man who'd survived punishment in the Dreadfort. The sight was hideious, but his father had forced him to meet the man anyway. Never underestimate the Boltons, his lord father had told him that night. The sight of the man was forever burned in his mind, and recalling the memory was enough to bring on a momentary shudder.

William took a last sip of wine and set down the glass. "That's not going happen, your grace," William swore. No one trusted Rhaeys, least of all William. "If Rhaeys if found scheming with Selester then imprison them both, but the kingdom cannot handle another King dying suspiciously. Have Tybalt take the white then, the young knight will protect you well. My nephew is brave and smart; he'll make good choices as your guard." That Jaehaerys spoke so freely of the plots that might be running against him left William to wonder just how much the young King knew - knowledge he wasn't sharing.

"Perhaps," Jaehaerys answered William, though his expression was still thoughtful for a moment. He was silent as another cheer echoed across the lists, and the cry of a frightened horse. "I'll speak with Tyrith whenever he gets round to returning. Meanwhile, I should let you return to the business of getting settled. Rhaeys and Aenyris have chambers in Maegor's Holdfast so the Tower is ready for your family."

Jaehaerys stopped and grinned at William. "I know you think I've done you a disservice bringing you back, but truly it's to keep an eye on you. Thanks to the Maesters you're forth in line- if something goes amiss, it would be a poor idea to have you in Winterfell where you could do nothing about it."

William should have been used to Jaehaerys openness by now, and yet the bluntness of his words still took the Lord of Winterfell by surprise. "I came because you asked, Your Grace, and the Starks serve the crown." He did not wish to be King again, not after his first and hopefully only experience. "I was in Winterfell the last time," William reminded his King. At last Jaehaerys had pointed out the need to keep eyes on him, but he hoped the King did not believe he'd been part of the plot to kill Paegon. "And Starks prefer the North. But we will remain in King's Landing to serve as long as you require."

He turned and bowed deeply. "I will see you in the morning, Your Grace." Then he took his leave.
