Who: Ernie Macmillan & Hazel Ridgebit
What: Hazel hasn't spent the whole of her holiday waiting to see Ernie again. Honest.
When: Wednesday, 12 April, evening
Where: Hufflepuff common room
Rating: Lowish.
It wasn't that Hazel hadn't enjoyed being home: hers and David's and Cadwy's favorite dishes cooked for breakfast and supper; afternoons with embroidery hoop in hand with her mother in the sun room or the garden, when the weather allowed for it; donning her slicker - too small for a full season now, but Hazel's mum insisted she might grow a bit yet, and Hazel held out hope for an ample bosom - and sailing out with her da on the Hagtooth Helga. There was so much for her to do, to keep her busy and her brothers, too, to keep them from thinking about what waited for them back at school, Hazel knew.
But she had something else to look forward to, and though Hazel knew it was selfish and stupid, stupid, stupid, by the end of her holiday she was eager to return to school if it meant getting to see Ernie again. Sure, she'd made a bit of a fool of herself the last time she had seen him, and he probably didn't like her that way, anyway, but Hazel found she didn't mind so much. If it made her a bad person to have something good to look forward to, to not worry for a moment about her best friend, her housemates, her mum and dad, her favorite teachers... then Hazel supposed she was a bad person.
At least she wasn't as bad as some others.
Of course she'd been too nervous about saying something really dumb the first few evenings back from home, but now she descended the stairs from the girl's dormitory, knitting in hand, prepared to say hello or at the very least sit and stare.
Hazel spotted Ernie, likely working on homework or whatever it was the Head Boy had to keep him busy in addition to everything else, and crossed the common room to where he was seated, smiling shyly.
"Hi, Ernie. How was your holiday?"
Good start.
