Rules
The rules! Please be sure to read them.
Creating a Character:
Step 1: Check the Available Positions List for a character you might like to play. You can have as many as you can handle, but only one of each gender from the Brotherhood and Fives for a total of four main characters. Townies are free.
Step 1 and a Half: Slap down a hold. Holds are allowed and will be effective for one week after they're placed. If your application is rejected three times your hold will be removed and you'll have to wait a week before requesting a hold on it again.
Step 2: Read the Setting. It's not important that you be an expert of the Victorian or Gilded age, so this page will fill you in on what you most need to know. No extra research required unless it's desired.
Step 3: Fill out the handy Application. Note that there are some great resources to help you there, including links to naming sites and a form to help you flesh out your character if you're stuck. Feel free to use them!
Step 4: Mail your application to me, the mod. The email is on the application page. I'll either accept or reject the app. I will always tell you why I rejected your app and how you can turn it into an accept. If however your application is rejected 3 times you will need to start over from scratch and your hold will be removed. Being rejected 3 times doesn't prevent you from trying again, you just have to start the application over.
Step 4 and a Half: In the event that two people apply for the same slot at the exact same time the decision will be made by best application with one edit allowed.
Adds are rolling. I'll add people as they're accepted and you can play right away!
Setting Up Your New Character
Step 1: Create a personal journal for your new character. Username can be anything, with or without underscores. It doesn't matter. Just don't make it something distracting, like sexual references.
Step 2: Paste your application information (minus your personal stuff like age) into your journal's user info. You will not be allowed to join the community until you do so, as it's important for other players to see your character's profile.
Step 3: Put up at least 10 icons of your character's "played by". We only use them in the sense here of someone who represents what your character looks like. It's not a celebrity game so you don't have to worry about playing your pb's personality or anything like that. Only choose one person as your pb. You don't have to pick someone who's in period costume, but their hairstyles or clothes can't be too modern either. Example: a guy in a suit is fine, but not a guy with a mohawk and jeans. No drawings, cartoons, or anime. Also keep modern images like cards, headphones, etc. to ooc icons only.
Hollow Art is a great place to find PBs.
And then you're done! Congratulations! You're now a full member of the game!
Game Play:
I hope everyone can make an effort to include as much historical detail as they know how, but I don't have anything against it if you don't know a lot or need some help now and then. If you don't know something, you don't have to spend hours scouring wikipedia to figure it out. I think that's a bit too much trouble for a game, though any effort to include historical details is appreciated and sometimes rewarded! You can make things up, including locations and historical events, within reason. No inventing space ships out of the blue or killing off Queen Victoria prematurely. Be reasonable. Also, please do not shout or get rude with people who know less about the setting than you do.
If you feel that someone's lack of knowledge is extremely detrimental to the game, please let me know and I will settle the matter. Please do not take such matters into your own hands.
Keep in mind that social codes and standards are extremely strict for this time period, and I consider navigating (and breaking) them part of the fun! The mod totally accepts and encourages yaoi and yuri. See the setting for more information.
Posting:
- AIM or MSN is required, of the two AIM being preferred.
- Threads are okay for group scenes, and acceptable as an alternative to AIM scenes.
- But don't post up a ton of "open to everyone" type threads, please. Just use discretion.
- Don't be afraid to contact people on the contact list! That's what it's there for! It is friends locked and will be open to you upon joining.
- Please use a standard 3rd person past-tense paragraph format.
- Quality is important! The minimum post size is 4 sentences, even over AIM. This will be enforced. One-liners are very difficult for others to respond to. This does not apply to journals or letters.
All logs go in the IC community. They should have the AIM screen names replaced with the character's names (use your word program's find and replace features to do this quickly), be under a cut, and have this form with them above the cut:
Who: (Names of the characters involved)
What: (A brief description of the scene)
Where: (Setting)
When: (Game timeline)
Warnings: (anything you think people should be aware of, especially sexual content! Make sure you mark things that aren't safe for work.)
Summary: (a short summary of what went on, so people who don't have to time to read it all can still be on top of it)
In addition, please put the names of the characters involved and a brief description of the scene in the subject line of the thread in the following format: Post Title (Name and Name)
Example: Fun at the Bakery (Joe and Bob)
Finally, all logs posted in the community need to be tagged with all the character's names. Make sure you use the right tags and don't have three different spellings of the same tag.
Example: Joe White, Bob Green
Logs of things such as diary entries should go into your character's personal journal. There are no length or content requirements for posting things in diaries. Everything that goes into the journals will have a little butt-cover context for the time period:
- Memes are appropriate as paper chain letters. You can use your imagination all you like.
- The usual journal communication will be considered as letters, and all comments will be considered letters back.
- Letters to one specific person can't be known ICly by other characters. You can also post invitations to events.
- If a letter is general to everyone it will be considered like a bulletin or newspaper editorial remark, and people can send you letters back.
- Basically, if it's something you don't want someone else to know, cut it and say who can see it. Otherwise, it's good.
- If you want to post something ooc for fun, go ahead and post it but make sure you tag or subject it ooc.
Rating and Adult Scenes
You are allowed to post explicit scenes. Follow this procedure to post them:
- Under a CUT
- FRIENDS LOCKED
- Posted with a WARNING in the warnings field of the post form
If you forget any of those three things, you get one warning from the mod before you're banned. Sexual material involving any character under the age of 18 may NOT be posted in the community! This is grounds for instant banning.
You must be legal in your area of jurisdiction to view content of a sexual nature in this game. If you are not you click all links at your own risk. The mod assumes no responsibility for your actions.
Keep in mind that I am very serious about having well-developed plots and characters. That means that if you cyber sex to the point where you aren't contributing to the plot or character development in any way at all, I'm not going to be happy about that and I will tell you to stop.
Character Relationships
I want to encourage you to interact with as many other players as possible. In that spirit, this is not necessarily a rule but I have a suggestion for politeness. Please make sure that you rp with others in a diverse manner, not always playing with the same one person. Especially, I want you to be considerate when creating romantic pairings. If you already have more than one or two characters in romantic relationships with one player's characters, please consider having a pairing with someone else. If any player ever does get obsessive about it and only plays with one other player in the entire game ever, I reserve the right to tell you to knock it off.
GMed Plots and Special Events
This RPG will occasionally feature plots and events run by a player (mun). The person running the plot is called the GM (game master) for that plot. A GMed plot is one in which the GM is not necessarily playing a character but is continuously setting a scene for other characters and providing them with npcs to talk to and clues to suggest what they might do next, like a mystery plot. Think Dungeons & Dragons.
You can be a GM! If you would like to run a GMed plot, just contact me with a proposal for your plot and I will let you know if it is approved.
A few short rules:
- GMs are responsible for setting a scene of a plot in such a way that characters are able to react and figure out the problems organically. Don't be difficult about giving clues.
- GMs are not required to disclose any part of their plot out of character. Repeatedly attempting to find out the details of a plot behind the scenes when the GM doesn't want to tell is not allowed.
General RPG Rules
Standard rules apply. No godmodding, killing without permission, taking over NPCs of others, etc. These rules are common RPG courtesies and will be enforced in this game.
These rules are in place because I want Athens Rising to be a fun and drama-free game for everyone to enjoy. Any questions or clarifications of the rules should be directed to the moderator via email or AIM.
