Severus downed his third measure of muggle whiskey, which he'd accio'd from a sleeping homeless tramp on the corner of two equally depressing and horrid streets in muggle London nearby. The streets were shamelessly stood, supporting each other in spoiling the grey and gloomy skyline, brick red tiny houses, with equally shameless people living inside of them. He was glad wizarding architects could at least construct a building that didn't appear as though it would fall down as soon as a gust of wind struck its horrid exterior, although at least Severus' flat wasn't constructed with bright red bricks. What an eye sore in the early morning.
His flat, his perfectly decent-looking if not a little frayed around the edges, so to speak, was where Severus was currently situated. He was waiting for an acquaintance. Rabastan Lestrange. Going off of their recent journal comment exchange in which they had both talked of their restlessness, Severus figured it only natural to invite him as a second should anything happen. Not that he presumed it would, but it was always better to be safe than sorry. At least he could stand Lestrange for more than half an hour, which was a rarity in itself. Severus liked nobody. Everybody, especially the Death Eaters, were egotistical, arrogant and very, very elitist. He supposed they were fair in acting so, he probably would treat a lower class with the same disregard and distaste as they treat him. No matter. Severus was perfectly aware of his own skills and advantages, even more so with the Dark Lord's decision to choose him to carry out this task. Severus wasn't so incapable as Yaxley, who couldn't even kill a harmless woman.
He sat on the worn couch impatiently. It was 11:45 on a Friday night and he was ready for some fun. He'd had a day to calm down from reading that blasted article documenting Lily's death and Lord Voldemort's defeat. He hadn't quite figured out what exactly he was going to, or even supposed to, do with this information but for the moment, he could use some kind of way to vent his anger. Marchwood and his family would be just this.
The assignment was to go in, kill Lyle Marchwood and his wife, along with their two children, and get out. No sparkles, no frills, just a quick in-out job. That was fine. Severus wasn't really one for torture, any how. Sure, perhaps animals and being cruel to children, but not full-on torture. He didn't have time for that, there was no need. Just kill. Serve your purpose. There's no need to show off. That was it. Kill and leave. Obviously, sending the Dark Mark goes without saying.
Rabastan would join him. He didn't even know what he was coming to do, with Snape, but he foresaw pretty damn quickly, what Severus was implying, and he saw correctly. Severus would very briefly explain the plan to Lestrange, before they could both apparate there (Severus had obtained the co-ordinates beforehand) and do their job. Now, he would wait.
Stepping over a filthy Muggle who lay prone in the street with an empty bottle of rum, Rabastan hissed through his teeth and found himself at the entrance to Severus’s flat. Knocking quietly on the door, he reflected for a moment how thrilled he had been to receive an invitation to join Severus on this mission. Even if he did not yet know what he planned for this evening.
He found Severus to be an interesting sort – a halfblood maybe but one with immense possibilities for the pureblood cause. No matter that certain family members had not signed off on that theory, Rabastan had never held with the thoughts of the family establishment. His thoughts on that matter, however, came to a brisk end when the door creaked open.
He slowly rose to his feet in some attempt to be a half-decent host, although he was unaware as to why he was even attempting. It wasn't like he had some sort of reputation to uphold, and as if Rabastan cared. Severus poured another measure of alcohol and thrust it his partner's way.
"I trust you are more than ready." he started, the corners of his lips upturning ever so slightly. He offered a seat before taking one himself. He just wanted to get on with this. "The Dark Lord has entrusted this task to me, and I cannot afford to fuck it up, as you know is the case with any task assigned by the Lord himself." He tucked a strand of loose, suspiciously shiny, hair behind his ear before continuing.
"We take out Marchwood and his family. We go in, kill them all, we go out. We send up the Mark and we're done. He has a wife and two kids." He shoved his hand in his robe pocket to check he had pocketed his wand, before putting on the ensemble and turning to the other, "Ready?"
Rabastan swept into Severus’s flat and looked around at the tasteful furnishings while thinking to himself that the apartment looked fairly good for one of his friend’s social strata. Quickly downing the glass of alcohol handed to him by Severus, he placed the empty cup down on the floor and sat on the indicated seat. Nodding his head in silent agreement as Severus explained the importance of the mission, Rabastan thought about what he would do later this evening. He would probably crash as soon as he arrived back home.
“Ready and able, mate,” Rabastan returned to his feet. “Let’s get this thing over with, yeah?” As Severus made sure of his own readiness to leave the flat, Rabastan also fingered his pocketed wand and ensured he had left all jewelry at home. “Don’t forget to wear gloves, Sev, if you are planning on wearing any rings. We don’t need a mistake like the other night,” Rabastan placed his mask on and turned to face his friend. He couldn’t wait to get out of the flat and follow the Dark Lord’s request.
Severus inwardly scowled at the use of the nickname 'Sev' that was just used, after all, he wasn't really used to being called that any more by anyone other than Lily, let alone a fellow Death Eater, before becoming pre-occupied with thoughts of slight amusement. He couldn't help but snort scornfully in answer to Rabastan's statement.
"Do I really look like the type of man that wears jewelry, Lestrange?" he questioned sardonically, before rolling his eyes and relaying the apparation co-ordinates to him, before he himself apparated. Quite handy that he managed to apparate right in Marchwood's back garden, which wasn't lit at all. He eyed the surroundings warily for any kind of intelligence he hadn't managed to obtain, such as a dog or extremely nosy neighbours. It seemed there was none. He was relieved and began slowly walking toward the back door of the house in preparation for Rabastan's arrival.
As Severus disappeared in a flash of light, Rabastan prepared for his own jump. Unfortunately, his excitement led to a jump into a set of rose bushes behind the house. He leapt into the air and landed awkwardly on his feet close to Severus’s hiding place beside the house. Rabastan knew he probably looked like a complete fool and muttered, “I’m tempted to incendio those fucking bushes when we’re all done inside.”
“I’m almost ready, mate,” Rabastan removed a large piece of shrubbery off his outfit and turned his around twice to make certain he had removed all the wood from his cloak. Apparently satisfied, he nodded towards the house, “Let’s take out the bastard and his family, shall we?”
A rather loud (in comparison to the previous silence, at least) noise broke the silence Severus had been enjoying, and he spun around, before merely raising a brow at the image that greeted him. What on God's Earth was this guy doing... Bemused, he turned back around, shaking his head retiredly, before nodding. This was no time to be amused.
He performed a quick and almost silent alohomora on the back door, beckoning Lestrange with his left hand as he crept into the kitchen. Snape uttered a small lumos as he almost bashed his leg on the corner of the counter unit. "I'll check downstairs first, you go ahead."
