RODOLPHUS LESTRANGE NAMED NEXT MINISTER
Quinley Habbernash - DP London
LONDON - After much speculation over the future of the Minstry of Magic after Millicent Bagnold's murder last month, retiring Minister for Magic, Otis Wilde, called a press conference early this morning to announce a successor: Foreign Diplomat with the Department of International Magical Cooperation, Rodolphus Lestrange.
Wilde stated that he and Lestrange began talks of a transitional government shortly after Bagnold's murder in the ministry at the hands of of a Death Eater. He publicly apologized for the Ministry's "less-than-prudent" means of handling the aftermath of the situation, and of leaving the announcement to "the last minute"; Wilde had announced his intention to retire on April 14 in late February. Wilde did, however, emphasize his belief that Lestrange is the best man for the job, and offered the younger man his unwavering support.
"Rodolphus is an excellent candidate, indeed," Wilde told reporters this morning. "He has received an incredible amount of support from his colleges in the [DIMC], and has an impeccable record of excellent service to the Ministry in his diplomatic position. Ministries abroad sing his praises. In these difficult and often dark times, I doubt the wizarding community could find a more dedicated and passionate young Minister."
At the age of thirty, Lestrange will be the youngest Minister for Magic in history to hold the position. He will also be the first in a line of six ministers who did not hold a position within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement before his appointment to office.
Lestrange began his career as an intern with the Department of Magical Cooperation in the late fall of 1968, and gradually rose to his current diplomatic role, meaning that the soon-to-be Minister is already a known name with other magical ministries across the globe. Lestrange appeared at the press conference with his wife, Bellatrix (the eldest daughter of late politician, Cygnus Black).
"I am deeply honoured by Minister Wilde's choice in appointing me his successor. I look forward to leading this historic ministry out of the war and into a new era," said Lestrange. "It is time for this period of chaos and disarray to come to an end, and to rebuild the ministry as a trusted institution; as a solid, unbreakable foundation for our culture."
Lestrange's inauguration is scheduled for early Wednesday afternoon in the atrium of the Ministry of Magic, at which point he will be expected to announce his cabinet following a personal speech. Refreshments will be served, and members of the general public are encouraged to attend.
