Katie was shrugging and stammering by the time Lucy came up to her. "Oh, hi!" she exclaimed, a little louder than she had intended, and threw her arms around her girlfriend. "She is who I was telling you about!" Katie said loudly as if they louder she spoke the more likely he was to understand.
The Italian man shrugged and gave Lucy a big smile. "I did not know," he said in Italian. "My apologies. But, can you blame me? She is beautiful. It would take a beauty such as yourself to catch her eye, for certain."
"I will be on my way then," the man continued in Italian. "Unless you ladies might both be interested in joining me for a drink." He smile and the look he shot the two of them made his intent unmistakable.
Except to Katie. Trying very hard to figure out what he was saying, she wasn't really watching him as he spoke. She understood the first part but not the second. "That sounds nice. Thank you," Katie said in broken, slow Italian.
Katie took Lucy's hand and smiled brightly. "Not bad, huh? I think I'm learning!" she said excitedly and ultimately ironically. The man grinned from ear to ear.
