Dean wonders if any other kids have to spend Christmas in a dirty hotel room. Everything is dusty, and there are stains on the curtains and bedspreads. There isn't even a Christmas tree. Daddy says it's all they can afford.
"Will Santa be able to find us here?" Sammy asks.
"I don't know," Dean replies.
As disappointed as he is with the situation, he considers telling his little brother that Santa doesn't exist. Sammy's eyes are too wide and hopeful though, and Dean restrains himself.
"No. He'll find us. He's magic, remember?" Dean says.
Daddy returns with a loaded shotgun. "Okay boys, time for bed."
"I want to stay up and wait for Santa," Sammy says.
Dean chimes in. "I'll wait up with him!"
Daddy sighs, and after a moment agrees. "All right. I've got to go out again. I'll be back in an hour. Protect each other. Keep the doors and windows locked."
Daddy leaves, and Dean tells Christmas stories to Sammy until they both fall asleep.
In the morning, there are gifts beneath the window. Daddy sits on a bed, one arm heavily bandaged. Dean has learned not to ask questions. He dives into the presents after Sammy, pretending that this is a normal Christmas.
