"Jack, what do you know about my parents?"
The question took Jack by surprise. Alex had never asked her about his parents before.
She'd been in the kitchen, preparing dinner, when he'd suddenly appeared in the doorway. She should have been happy that at least he was talking instead of sitting for hours and staring at the telly, but she would rather it have been about something that wouldn't reinforce his current depression.
"Um, I only know the little that Ian told me when he hired me," she replied, pausing in her cutting of the vegetables and letting her hands rest on the counter, giving him her full attention. "Why do you ask?"
He was staring at a piece of paper in his hands. Without looking up at her, he said, "I was looking at this picture. Ian gave it to me a few years ago when he was going through some old boxes. It's a picture of him with my mum and dad, and another couple. They're on some kind of sleigh ride, somewhere with lots of snow. I realized that I don't even know where it was taken, or when. I don't know if my mum and dad were married yet or just dating. I don't know who the other two people are in the photo, and I don't know…I don't know anything, about them, and now I never will…"
His voice broke and the hand holding the picture trembled. With the other hand, Alex wiped his eyes. Jack was at a loss as to what to say.
"Alex, I'm sorry. I really don't know anything more than what you do. Ian said they'd died in a plane crash when you were three months old. You would have died too, but right before they left, you'd developed an ear infection and weren't allowed to fly. You were supposed to join them later…." Her voice trailed off into a whisper. Her heart was breaking, seeing Alex so lost like this.
She moved to comfort him, but was taken aback when he suddenly became angry, looking up at her with pain-filled eyes.
"He took them from me," he shouted. "He took everything from me. When he killed Ian, he took my parents too. I'll never know anything about them now! I wish I would have killed him when I had the chance!"
He turned and stormed from the kitchen, dropping the photograph to the floor.
"Alex, wait!" she called. "Please, come back!" But when she heard the door to his room slam shut, she knew it was no use.
