Who: Serena van der Woodsen with a bit of Alec, Faith and Hayley thrown in
What: Against all odds Serena survives the apocalypse
When: Today
Where: The Prison
Warnings: No
"So what are you going to do? Just mope around here? She's not coming back, Alec."
"Don't you think I know that?" he snapped back at her.
Serena had stopped by the cabin where Alec was staying out of sheer concern. She kept expecting him to return home but it had become obvious by now that he had no plans to return. Rebekah's cabin remained empty and it separated Serena from Klaus's. The older vampire seemed to be the only other person on the property these days and he and Serena had never exactly been friends so he intimidated her more than gave her any sense of security. It was strange because Serena didn't think she could be intimidated anymore. It was a clear sign that the life had returned to the New York blonde. She could feel fear again. Now she just need to shake Alec out of whatever this was.
"I'm sorry. I'm not trying to upset you. I only came over here to let you know that I'm moving back into the prison. Hayley's there and my friends are there and I don't really feel safe at Kol's anymore."
Alec quirked an eyebrow at her as if to say did you ever? "Good for you," he said instead.
"I really think you should come. Max and Steve live there now too. They're on The Council even."
"Good for them."
"Alec!" Serena's hands balled into two small fists at her sides. Being Alec's best friend could be a really irritating task. He didn't make it easy, that was for sure but somehow Serena stubbornly stuck by his side. She had already lost Blair, most likely to the zombies and everything had been ruined between her and Damon after Nate had died. She wasn't going to screw things up with Alec and luckily he made that easy on her by being just as screwed up as she was.
"Look, legs. I'm glad you're moving into the prison. Living out here in the woods is fucking stupid for someone like you. So unless you're here to ask me to help you pack, I'm not really interested and I got shit to do."
"You won't even consider moving back in there?"
Alec was quiet for a long moment and then he looked away, his green eyes flitting briefly out the kitchen window into the woods. "No," he said quietly. "I won't."
Serena could be stubborn too but she was a little more subtle about it, so she didn't push him right then and there. Instead she nodded and let him take her back to Kol's but this wasn't the last he would hear from her on the subject. She went inside the lonely house and noticed not for the first time that Kol still hadn't returned. The last time she had seen him was Wednesday she thought. He had walked her to the prison so she could spend the night with her friends there. Friends, of course meant Hayley but she and Kol never had any kind of arrangement or commitment. The only time he had ever expressed interest in one was when he was high on rage and wanted to turn her into a vampire.
Serena had always thought she would be a vampire one day but these days she was feeling the werewolves more or at least one particular werewolf. One brilliantly sexy werewolf with long legs and beautiful dark hair and hazel eyes that sparkled when she smiled. Serena hadn't seen Hayley coming at all. She was just another beautiful girl in a dark vampire bar that had caught Serena's eye for a dance. She knew the two of them together would get attention and so they had. She just hadn't realized how much of her own attention would be captivated by Hayley. They had no secrets either. Hayley had been right there in full view of Serena's downward spiral. She already knew the kind of shit Serena had gotten herself into. And considering how they had sex the first time they met after a few drinks, it wasn't as if Hayley had a lot of room to judge. It was supposed to be a one night stand but they kept doing it over and over again, meeting up and drinking and hooking up. Then one night they had stayed up all night talking. Serena had been high as hell on coke but that didn't make it any less special and having Hayley there when she was coming down wasn't like coming down at all. It had been like a discovery.
Serena had never tried to bury herself in Hayley. It wasn't like Kol who she practically wrapped up in paper and smoked. Kol was a non-stop thrill ride of twists and turns. He kept her adrenaline pumping with his surprises and his unpredictable mood swings. She never knew what he was going to do next and that made him so exciting to her. The closer she got to him, the closer she was to death and the closer she was to death, the closer she was to Nate. It wasn't real and it wasn't right. She still wanted to say goodbye to him. She still wanted to explain to him that she was leaving and that she hoped they could still be friends. She knew they would be. If only he would come home so they could talk.
After awhile she began to pack just to kill time. It took her awhile. She had a tendency to collect things even when she lived at the prison but Kol had spoiled her with all kinds of dresses and jewelry and heels and Serena wasn't one to throw those kinds of things out. Even in the middle of an apocalypses, with flesh eating corpses roaming the forest Serena would be damned if she stepped outside in anything less than three inches of designer footwear. It took her awhile to collect everything but after a few hours she was packed. The only thing she needed to do was get in contact with someone over at the prison and ask to borrow a truck. Maybe Robin and Dean could help her out or something.
She was about to message them on the network but put it off. She couldn't leave without saying goodbye and so she grabbed a piece of paper and a pen from the kitchen drawer.
Kol
it's been fun. i'm going back to the prison now. thanks for the escape & everything else. let's stay friends forever. xo, S
She sighed and left the note on the counter. It was probably a shitty way to leave things but that was Serena van der Woodsen. Long before zombies roamed the earth, she had left a trail of similar notes behind her.
Phone in hand, she was just about to leave a message for Robin on the network when somebody pulled up outside in a truck. Serena narrowed her eyes and walked to the window to see Alec jump out of the driver's side. She noticed his motorcycle was in the bed of the truck. She raced to the door and opened it, staring at Alec expectantly.
"Fine. Let's move back to the prison." His voice was begrudging but his green eyes were smiling. Serena threw her arms around him and hugged him hard.
Serena browsed the network aimlessly as Alec moved her things into the truck. It took him about five minutes with his super speed and strength. He was like a small tornado scurrying in and out of the cabin. The trip to the prison was short, perhaps made a bit longer by Serena's excited babbling. She couldn't believe how happy she was about moving back into the prison when she couldn't claw her way out of there fast enough before. She sobered a bit as they drove past the tree where Nate was buried but Serena didn't dwell on her dead husband. She was moving on with her life these days.
Sentry looked confused as hell as they let her and Alec inside. Everyone was happy to see Serena but Alec was drawing a few suspicious looks. She wondered if he felt it but just one look at his face and she could tell that he was. She took his hand and tugged him inside. Let them look if they wanted to look. They were stupid if they didn't want Alec on their side. Sure, he could be kind of a jerk but he was also built to be a weapon and it wasn't one you wanted pointed at you. Serena was over the whole Alec vs. Faith thing and she was putting a stop to it right here and now.
Faith approached them and gave them a curious look. "Everything cool?" she asked, more surprised than anything else.
"We want to move back in. We can do that, right?" Serena asked.
"Uh... " Faith's dark eyes moved from Serena over to Alec and Serena detected the ghost of a smile there. "Sure?"
"Great! You can put me back on the schedule for the kitchen! I'm going to go pick out my cell. See you later!"
Serena scampered off before either one of them could stop her. She had only opened the door, they would have to do the rest. She had her own relationships to repair inside the prison. Her and Penny hadn't been nearly as close since she moved out and she knew she needed to mend that friendship. She would make that a high priority right after she said hello to her werewolf and then watched Alec move her stuff in.
Hayley was sleeping when Serena got to her cell. Even when she was sleeping, she was so beautiful. Serena admired her from the doorway for a minute before kicking off her heels. She shed her jacket and tossed it on the empty bunk before she crawled into Hayley's. Werewolves tended to be warm and Hayley was no exception, she barely stirred as Serena pressed her cold feet against her warm legs. She put her arm around Hayley and held onto her tightly curled up next to her.
Sleep well, Serena thought. We have the rest of our lives. Soon enough Hayley would be roused from sleep and she would insist on helping Alec move Serena's things inside even though Alec would argue he could do it faster. Serena would go to the kitchen and chat with all of her old friends and make new ones. She would hang the portrait of the New York City skyline that Neal painted for her up in her and Hayley's cell. She would have cocktails with Penny and Robin and they would catch up on gossip and laugh like old times. There would be more dark times but they would also have these little quiet moments that made everything worth it.
