Who: Dimitri and Connor What: Fulfilling a promise When: Friday night Where: The wilderness close to where Connor has been staying Warnings: Um, yeah. Character death.
Nothing was driving Dimitri forward harder than remembering the brief glimpse he'd had of Connor only a few days after he'd been turned. A wooden stake was in his hand and he could have rushed forward to attack. He was sure enough that Connor wouldn't have run from him but towards him. Both men were that confident in their abilities and both had a pull towards one another that wouldn't allow them to turn their backs on each other. Connor's reasons were naturally different than Dimitri's, but he knew before and especially after hearing about the note that was left for him, that it would only be a matter of time before they came face to face. Dimitri preferred it be before there was even more destruction and carnage in his path.
Knowing that he could have stopped this or tried to stop it before anyone was hurt kept Dimitri out at all hours searching for him. He'd gone into town and found an old map of the entire city and surrounding areas that he would study during his breaks. Sometimes he would stop by the inn to eat and to rest but usually he would find an abandoned cabin to get a couple hours sleep and then continue searching. Each move that was made generally happened within the wilderness. It couldn't be terribly far away from the town or the prison because he knew Connor was that cocky. The witches were concealing his location, but he was leaving a trail.
It wasn't only those that stayed in the prison were affected. New survivors coming to Everett for shelter were found drained of blood. Between his feedings and the other sightings or attacks, Dimitri had narrowed down places that he could be staying considerably especially compared to where he had already searched. With so many people searching it was likely someone had walked straight past the spot and not realized it.
Not many people were completely aware of how good a tracker Dimitri was. Rose and Lissa knew because he'd found them once upon a time. They'd evaded being caught for two years, but he knew Connor wouldn't make it nearly that long because he seemed to be refusing to leave town. Dimitri knew he was confident and cocky, but he also wondered if it was more than that. He'd told him during one of their first conversations that he knew how this would end. He had to know but maybe he was counting on it.
Managing only to get an hour of sleep, Dimitri set back out in the wilderness with the map open. He'd circled a section not far from his spot that he was almost sure had to be where Connor was staying. A couple of fresh bodies had been found earlier in the day and even if it hadn't been Connor it could have been those that were staying with him. The witches he'd turned or his sire. So, he tucked the map away and walked through the woods carefully and quietly, taking looks around to ensure that he wasn't being followed. He arrived on the edge of the area where he thought his set up could be and became extra cautious. The wooden stake was in his hand now and his senses were on high alert.
Dimitri walked for a couple of minutes more. The snow that was beginning to melt crunched almost silently underneath his boots. A chill wind moved through the trees and blew some of the loose pieces of hair against his face. Maybe it was the wind, but Dimitri felt a presence nearby so he moved behind a tree and waited. A twig snapped on the ground and Dimitri knew that was no accident. Connor knew he was here and Dimitri knew Connor was here. It was time to end this for good one way or another.
He stepped out from the tree and wasn't surprised to see his friend facing him. Dimitri didn't bother hiding his stake as Connor didn't seem to hide the amusement on his face from seeing it.
"Hello, Connor. You make it hard for friends to find you to catch up."
