There was a new sort of zombie in Everett and the cases of injuries from raiders making quick trips into the town were growing. Most were able to get away with minor injuries, but some were caught on the wrong end of these witches' claws and needing to be admitted into the infirmary. A handful of the doctors had moved away from town in search of their friends, so there was much less medical staff than there was at one time. Adrian and Leo were there to help out with the healings too, but Lissa didn't think she was overextending herself, so she stayed close to the infirmary and kept watch on those that were hurt. She sat with some while they were sleeping and as long as she knew they didn't object to her healing them, she'd occasionally slip in a little spirit while they were asleep. Those that wanted to heal themselves, she simply sat with and tried to keep company. As a spirit user, she knew that her presence was calming and she used that to her advantage.
Her friends were keeping a close eye on her, especially Rose and Christian, but she waved off their concerns and tried to avoid Adrian until they were able to have another feeding at Thor's. She didn't want him analyzing her aura and then Jill peeking in and tattling to Rose. Jill had made a habit of tattling, hadn't she? Lissa remembered well how it could affect things and she wasn't going to allow that to happen again. Not with this new vampire authority she'd somehow drawn the short straw on and was asked to become a part of with Rose. Rose who's most diplomatic answer was a fist to the face if she didn't get her way. Lissa had made it clear to everyone the moment she arrived in Everett that she wanted no part in being elected to the prison council and Christian seemed to understand that he'd already played the nominate your girlfriend for office card already and wasn't allowed to do so again. He better not have found another card or her last reaction would be considered tame.
"There may be more to come in this afternoon," Lissa said to Priya even though it was clear she wanted her to go up to her cell to get some rest. If she was able to look in a mirror, Lissa would understand why. Her hair was unkempt, her eyes were red droopy, and there was a thin layer of sweat on her brow. She'd used the spirit on a particularly bad case this morning for one of the sentry workers who had come in with a gash on their thigh. Kono had resisted being healed at first but eventually was won over although Lissa may have healed her more than she'd originally agreed to and helped her become good as new again.
No matter how much she insisted that she was fine to stay, Priya instructed her to end her shift and go get something to eat and to rest. Lissa scowled at the woman and said nothing as she left the infirmary. She only picked up a glass of water from the cafeteria on her way to the cell that she shared with Natasha. Waiting for her inside was Christian. One look at her and he knew she wasn't feeling well.
"Don't start," she said darkly. Now that she was married to Clint, Natasha didn't stay in their cell every night, so Christian had sometimes camped out with her. If only her roommate would stop making eyes at her husband and stay there so she didn't have to deal with Christian's constant pestering. He may have thought he was being careful, but she could see the worry in his aura. She wasn't stupid.
Christian hadn't even said anything when Lissa turned around quickly and stared straight at him, pointing her index finger right in his face. "She doesn't get to tell me how to use my own ability and before you side with her because I know you will, I'm fine. If these people wouldn't go after these zombies like fucking idiots then I wouldn't have to be using so much, would I?"
"Lissa, they're not doing it on purpose."
"You sure about that? Maybe not consciously, but half of these people have a death wish the minute they step outside the gates." Slumping down on her bunk, Lissa crossed her arms and was half pouting and half pissed off for no good reason. The spirit was clouding her judgment to see that she wasn't thinking or acting rationally. "Now I have this stupid vampire council to worry with. Some of these vampires and their lines have more troubles than the Moroi line could dare to wish for and I'll be damned if I have to solve their problems for them. Who do they even think that they are?"
In reality, Lissa was glad to help out the others and hoped she would be able to do some good. She wanted to learn more about the other lines and see how they could work together to hopefully help humanity gain ground and get back on its feet again. She was mortal, but she was still a vampire. A royal vampire who knew a thing or two about settling disputes. If only she could solve the one happening inside of her own mind at the moment.
"When's the last time you ate or got some sleep?" Christian was looking at her now and she immediately averted her eyes. He didn't say a word but sat down on Natasha's bunk across from her. "Lissa."
"What?" She snapped. "I said I was fine. Go find Adrian or something. I want to be alone."
Back on his feet, Christian gave her a little bow. "Yes, your Majesty." He lingered a moment and Lissa didn't look at him to see the concern still evident in his eyes before he walked out of her cell.
Finally alone. It wasn't long before her dark thoughts began to all run together and she ended up with her head against her pillow and fast asleep. Christian would be sitting back in her room when she woke up.
