Who: Veronica and Archie
What: Ronnie wants to show Archie a magic trick
When: Bendyish
Where: Courtyard of prison
Warnings: MAGIC BUTTERFLIES, YA'LL
Veronica knew that she was nervous but she wasn’t sure what she was this nervous over something that seemed silly. Well, it wasn’t that silly but it was something that Veronica hadn’t planned to do until she knew that she could. After all, what she wanted to do involved magic and she was still a total newbie when it came to the most basics of spells. Bonnie assured her that she would get there but Veronica was pushing herself a little too hard. What was wrong with embracing her new found power? She had been working on charms which were problematic but easier to do. Her necklace was charmed with magic and it helped her focus on the minor spells.
Did Veronica Lodge ever think that she would be here? Studying to become a witch? No. Never. She was daddy’s little girl. The mafia princess of Riverdale. She was never one who wanted to be on the sidelines so why did that have to change here? It didn't. Veronica wanted to prove to her friends that she could muster the strength to be useful. Cooking and cleaning? Yeah, no. She was much more than some simple little prison maid or cook.
“Come on,” Veronica was leading Archie out to the courtyard. It was late but the moonlight above them lit up the yard with a bright glow so it was easy to see. She didn’t tell Archie what they were doing but because they were outside and away from the prison she guessed that what they were going to do was a little more than PG.
And by the way Archie was grabbing at her waist Ronnie knew she hit the nail on the head, her hands pushing his away, laughing a little because she felt awfully ticklish there. “Stop,” she said, her hands pulling against his forearms as they reached the middle. “I didn’t bring you out here to mess around but we definitely can revisit that after I show you something.”
Archie didn’t know what Veronica wanted to show him. He thought it was maybe just an excuse to get away and to be together, although the two of them really didn’t care when it came to wanting that, so he didn’t know why she was pulling him out of the prison and outside. Things had been a little rough between them lately because of the whole magic thing. He didn’t really agree with it, he didn’t know how someone could just learn something overnight but even Archie knew it wasn’t an overnight thing. Ronnie was practicing all the time, when she could and sometimes it cut into their time and Archie just had to deal with it. He was patient, but he wasn’t that patient. Luckily, he had a sentry job to keep up with too so he just turned to that.
“No?” He asked, a small smile on his face when she smacked his hand away. He let go of her and just followed. The nights were getting a lot cooler than they used to be and he could smell the beginning of the end of summer. That and zombies. It was gross but the cooler weather kind of helped block out that stench. It was nice for once.
“Okay, okay,” he sighed when they finally stopped and he looked at her and then up at the sky. There were a million stars out. He couldn’t remember the last time he actually looked up there but Ronnie’s voice brought him back down to earth. His eyes were on her as he looked her over.
He missed her, a lot.
“Okay, what do you want to show me?” He asked, reaching for her dark hair and touching it so he could push it back behind her ear.
It was beautiful and when Ronnie’s eyes averted slightly she saw the stars and how bright they shined. She knew that because the cities were voided of power the night sky could be the way it was supposed to be viewed, shining brightly without the city lights to block out their blazing glory. For a moment she almost forgot why she was here but decided to get back on track. The two of them could always stargaze later.
“I know I’ve been distant,” she started out, not wanting to think that she didn’t know that Archie wasn’t missing her. Of course Veronica knew that her boyfriend worried and wondered about her. She wasn’t doing this to hurt him or push him away. Ronnie loved that in some way, despite not liking it, that Archie understood her plight. “I know things are hard and that you rather me be doing a hundred different things than this because it’s dangerous. Because it makes me a target.”
Veronica felt like she was a target regardless. All of them were. Being magical did make her more noticeable but at the same time learning it was making her more of a danger to others. She could probably even defend herself at this point although Ronnie didn’t want to try unless Bonnie was with her. Anything could go wrong when it came to spells.
“I just...want to show you what I’ve learned. If that’s okay?” She kept magic away from Archie because maybe she was trying to protect him from it. If something went wrong and Archie was inflicted then it would be her fault but at this point Veronica trusted herself. She knew that she could do this.
Archie didn’t know what she was going to say or do, especially when she started off like that. He didn’t think she would break up with him and something in her voice didn’t alert him that she screwed something up. It was just different. They were different. They were changing. Things weren’t the same anymore and everyday it was like a piece of them was just falling away. He had written a lot of new verses over it. How nothing was the same anymore and how they needed to ground themselves. It was his sort of therapy and he was grateful that whoever had brought his guitar here. It probably drove Alec and the others next to his cell nuts, but he appreciated it.
“Ronnie,” he said, his head tilting a little before she actually told him why they were here. She wanted to show him something that she had learned and he felt hesitant for a second. But was it because she would be a target or because it was something new and different and he might have been afraid?
Either way, he was here, with his girl and he wanted to see what she spent so much time on. He wanted to see what she had learned.
“Okay,” he finally said and smiled a little. “I want to see. Show me.”
“Just don’t freak out, okay?” Mostly don’t freak out if something goes wrong but Veronica was confident that she could do this. Magic was just absorbing the elements. There were all kinds of different magic but Ronnie was focusing on the soil itself and nature to provide rather than asking spirits. There were a lot of dead people and from what Bonnie said spirit magic could work but also it couldn’t work if the spirits themselves were being testy. Tradionatal was the way to go for this.
“Give me your hands,” she said, not that she was going to expect Archie to help her but she needed someone to stabilize her. Archie could be her anchor since she didn’t have Bonnie to help her. She didn’t think she would need it. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to turn you into anything. Although be warned that maybe I could?” Veronica shrugged, knowing that she wasn’t that powerful. Yet.
She grounded herself just like Bonnie told her to, her connection to nature, to its power, she couldn’t just take hold of it so she needed about a minute to reach inside of herself to feel that familiar pull at her gut. She guessed that it was like absorbing energy, getting enough of it to make this work, or at least she hoped it did.
“Papiliones. Evenire.” It was basic latin. Nothing too creepy as Veronica spoke her spell that should have been harmless. All she wanted was to invoke some butterflies and the moment she opened her eyes she was shocked to see that dozens of blue butterflies were emerging from the woods, their wings glowing brightly, as if the butterflies themselves were magic.
“Ronnie,” he said, exaggerating her name as he smiled down at her. He didn’t want her to turn him into anything but she was right, she probably could have. He still couldn’t believe this, but he was rolling with it. He wanted to see what his girlfriend could do. What she had learned. He kept his eyes on her, holding onto her hands, his gaze dropping to her full lips that were painted a bold red, just like she was. His fire. He loved her so much.
He watched her lips moved, hearing the words and slowly, he looked up and noticed butterflies flying over their heads, circling. His smile grew much wider, this was stunning. He was mesmerized at what she had done.
“This is you? You did this,” he said, looking at her, confused but he was welcoming it. A butterfly landed on her shoulder and he reached out, holding his finger so the butterfly would come to him. It did, only briefly before flying off and over their heads again.
“I can’t believe you did this.” It was amazing . His girlfriend was amazing.
His eyes met hers and she looked proud of herself and she should have been. Maybe he was all wrong about this. Maybe he was being too hard on the fact that she was learning magic. Maybe she wouldn’t have been a target after all. It was just butterflies. There was nothing bad from this.
“You are amazing,” he said, leaning forward so he could kiss her. He wanted to see more of what she could do.
Really it was like Ronnie opened her eyes and she was in the middle of a Disney Channel movie. She half expected the birds and other woodland creatures to come out of the woods to dance around them but right now the butterflies were putting on a show, their glowing wings creating colors in the air, waves of blue that wandered and floated over their heads. God, it was so beautiful. Ronnie didn't realize that something so problematic could be transformed into something beautiful. She used magic to call out to nature and nature responded, it gave her exactly what she wanted. Butterflies to come forth.
“I can’t believe it,” she said, suddenly amazed at herself, her eyes watching as Archie was able to get a butterfly to perch on his finger before it fluttered away to join the rest. If she could do this then what else could she do? Suddenly the possibilities became endless. Without enough practice could she do more? Summon more? She knew this wasn’t just simple conjuration although the butterflies did begin to disappear, each of them flying back into the woods.
Veronica leaped into Archie’s arms almost, hands pulling his face towards hers so that she could kiss him fully, wanting nothing more than to savor this moment with him. Veronica wanted to show Betty. She wanted to tell everyone what she could do but right now she wanted to celebrate with her boyfriend. .
“I can,” he said, finally. He was so against the magic, he was so against it all, but he never once doubted that Ronnie could actually do it. That she could set her mind to something, want something so badly and go for it. That was just who she was. He admired that about her. It helped him and helped him go for what he wanted. She was his encouragement and his rock and he loved her so much for it. And now, with all of this, with what she could do, it was just -
Amazing.
He held onto her as she came closer, her mouth on his. He kissed her back in return and really wished they were back in his cell. But right now, they weren’t and he pulled back a little.
“I knew that if you wanted something so badly, you would find any way to get it. And you have, once again. It’s one of the things about you that I love so much, Ronnie. It scares me though, all of this. First it’s butterflies, but what’s next?” He asked, his eyes on hers. She was so strong and so persistent so he knew that this wouldn’t end. She’d get so much deeper into it.
That’s what he was afraid of.
“I don’t know,” she said, admitting that she didn’t know what the next step was going to be. Anything was possible but right now she just wanted to indulge in the one thing that was never going to change. Ronnie knew her feelings for Archie were constantly growing. They had been through so much together, Ronnie just wanted to try and live the way they could.
“So, about revisiting what you thought we were going to do?” Ronnie lifted a brow, her body still close to Archie’s. She knew that they could at least make the most out of this. All Archie had to do was say yes although she knew he would.
Tonight was going to be about them. About Veronica’s practice and how much she’d grown. Now it was time to share what she could with her boyfriend, as long as he wanted her to.
