======================
It was just before dawn, and Vlad Tepes was in one of the empty houses in the city. He hadn't yet found a place to really call his own yet. So he would spend time at a residence for a week or so before moving on. And it wasn't like he had many possessions or valuables to carry around. He didn't have attachments to material things like most people often did. No, he just required his clothes, phone, and sword. Anything else? Well, that was always easily obtained and discarded once finished, easily replaced once he found a new abode. And some things he could do without... such as food or beverages. He glanced at his gold watch and saw that he had come here just in time, it seemed, as it was nearly sunrise. Not that he was too worried. He had the power to control weather and could create overcast, cloudy skies if needed. But then that would attract attention. And hey, maybe some people wanted a sunny day.
He made his way into the bedroom, removing his coat. Setting his sword aside. He paused, noting that he suddenly felt odd. There was a slight pounding sensation. He took the knife from his belt, suddenly wincing as he felt it leave a small cut on his palm. And even more surprise as he didn't feel it healing. He looked at it; sure enough, it was still there. "What is this," he uttered, in a slight tone of panic, with confusion amidst as well. Come to think of it, he did feel less, if he were honest. It caught up to him then, that pounding he sensed? Heartbeat! His own! What did this mean. Was he.. wait, was he.. human again? Was he? It seemed so, he thought, as this realization hit him. He thought he should probably feel threatened, angry, or afraid, now that he was faced by mortality once again.
But no. As he thought about his predicament, he was beginning to see it as a blessing. When he had made the deal with the Master Vampire, it was for three days. If he hadn't fed by then, he'd be human. He truly thought his vampire gifts could win the battle in that time. It was only because he hadn't, and as his wife falling to her death, who had even pleaded for him to drink, that he had remained with this curse. And now? Now, he was finally free. "Freedom which comes over 500 years too late," he mused to himself. Had this taken place back then, he could have returned to his son. But alas, it didn't happen that way. So for this to happen to him now after all this time? It was bittersweet, to be sure.
He decided that he might as well take advantage of his new condition. Taking back his sword and slipping his coat on, he made his way outside the house, using a ladder to climb upon the roof, where he stood. And waited. He did not have to wait long. His eyes looking ahead to the horizon, he saw light. He saw the perfect round orb of yellow starting to rise, and as it did -- daylight. Rays of sunlight. He let out a sigh, feeling the warmth from it. It didn't burn his flesh as it normally would have. It was actually soothing to him. And the sight of it was quite beautiful. "It's truly been too long," he spoke softly, closing his eyes as he continued to wait. It was about an hour later when he felt satisfied enough to go out in the city.
He had spent most of the day exploring. He had been caught by surprise when there was a group of ten zombies blocking his path in the road. His instinct was to just either walk between or around them as before, and they would keep milling about, oblivious. Today it would not be so. A few seemed agitated by his presence, then others, and then the hunger took over. He paused, surprised, as well as realizing he should have anticipated this. A look of annoyance on his features, the former Vampire Lord readied his sword, moving around several of them in a circle, slicing, removing heads swiftly, stabbing and decapitating. He moved swiftly, a whirlwind of death, each one being felled after another, keeping himself outside the circle rather than inside, and eventually.. all were dead. permanently, that is.
Vlad could not help but smile. It seemed that he still had it. Even as a human, he was still a formidable opponent. After all, in the old days? Great warriors of courage would flee at the mere sight of him on the battlefield, just from reputation alone, and those who doubted would have it proven to them. He remembered other times when he had been able to take down no less than twelve men in just under a minute. Breathing heavy, he sighed contentedly and sheathed his sword. As he continued on through this day, then another, and another, his thoughts went to his family. Even after all this time, his memory of them was just as clear as he'd been if he had only seen them seconds ago.
He eventually had made his way inside a rather large church, which had the usual; pews, crosses on the walls, windows depicting either Christ or holy angels, the pulpit, and the altar. Vlad sat in the front pew, looking up at the large cross. It didn't shine or glow. It appeared just as a normal symbol made of wood. "Lord, it is Vlad Tepes, Vlad Dracul as was my birth name, servant of the Order of the Dragon. I know, it's been a very long time," he spoke aloud, looking upward toward the holy symbol. "I know that as a creature of the dark, of the night, that they serve your Enemy. Even though that as Dracula, I rejected him. I like to think there were times when my life served your purposes instead. I've abstained from drinking of the innocent, and instead gorge myself on the life juices of the most heinous. My action, cruel as they might seem by modern society? I've punished evil. Stood against others of my kind."
He continued, "Even when my nature compels me to give into the dark side, to yield to my baser, primal instincts? I resist." He sighed. "And yes, I know that maybe impaling those cannibals was a tad extreme, but they would never stop after eating that teenager. They deserved it. But... it's been too long. I know that vampires.. well, I doubt they are welcomed in Paradise. But I am now me again. I repent of any transgressions, O Lord, and request your forgiveness. I think I'm done. Yeah.. yes, I think so. I want to see them again."
There was a slight tear in his eyes, feeling wet. He could see them in his mind. His wife Mirena, blond, beautiful in her white gown. And his son Ingeres, with kind blue eyes, happy, and holding him in his arms. "Please," he said, making the Catholic sign of the cross. "I'm ready. I'm ready now. Bring me to them. I'm ready to go. Lord, you can take me. Please.. bring me home. Bring me home to them. My task is over, my race is complete. My battles are fought. You can take me right now if it is your will. I surrender my life, just let me come home at last.."
But alas, there was silence. Though it wasn't like he didn't know prayer wasn't always a two-way conversation, as earnest as he was, he truly meant every word. he was ready for it to be over and to have his spirit reunited Above with his wife and son. He didn't know if he would have this particular request answered. He guessed it could be. He was human now, so he could 'leave' in any assortment of ways. Someone else could kill him, he could fall from great height. Or zombies could kill him; well, no, he was just too damn good. Who knows, maybe he'd get lucky and he'd have his last sleep tonight. In any case, there was not much else he could do now. One good thing, though? After that 'talk' he had moments ago, it felt as if a great weight was lifted from him. So that was one good thing to come from all this. Now he would just have to try to enjoy the rest of his time here as human. For however long that may last.
