It was kind of sad, Archie couldn’t remember the last conversation he had with Betty. Or with Jughead. He couldn’t remember the last time he had seen them. It was something he was thinking about as he got himself ready to go and find Betty. He had no idea where she was, he was waiting for the GPS coordinates to get in. He planned on leaving by himself. He and Ronnie weren’t really talking these days and he didn’t want her out there with everything going on. Not that he would have been any better going out. He was trained to use a gun. And he was somewhat a good shot with a bow and arrow, but Ronnie had been learning magic. Still, knowing that she would have taken care of herself and probably him in the process, it didn’t make him want to go and tell her that he was leaving. By now, Betty would have probably told her. It would be something she could yell at him about later. In his own way, he was just trying to protect her. He managed to get a truck and he explained what he was doing. It was supposed to be a quick trip. There and back. It shouldn’t take long but with the Darkness out there, he knew that anything could have happened. But the prison wasn’t on lockdown and as long as he signed out and had a weapon, what more could they have said? Archie was about to pull out of the space at the prison when he saw Ronnie standing in front of the truck and he tilted his head, giving her a look. She climbed into the cab and he sighed, looking at her. He didn’t say anything to her. He should have known better than to think that she wouldn’t have wanted to come to get Betty, so he just pulled out the rest of the way and drove off, heading out the gates and down the long road that took them from the prison. The coordinates, Betty’s coordinates came in and Archie noticed that the area she was wasn’t that far from the prison. Probably just a few miles. It was a short enough distance to sit in silence but he knew it would be uncomfortable the entire way. --- Veronica didn’t think that it was going to be odd to travel with Archie but who was she kidding? It was awkward to approach him let alone tell him she was coming with. It wasn’t as if she didn’t think Archie was incapable of helping one of their best friends it was just that Veronica wanted to make sure nothing happened to the two of them while they were out there. Archie needed someone to watch his back and she didn’t want to be at the prison and find out later that something horrible happened. She could have done without the ride, though. Veronica sat there and didn’t know what to say or how to say it. She could tell that Archie wanted to talk but she averted her eyes every time they almost made contact. Now wasn’t the time to speak about possessed demons or the fact that Archie slept with her multiple times while she wasn’t even in control of her own body. Betty’s signal was a beacon to her location and Veronica looked at Archie’s phone to see that they were getting closer. Veronica made sure to look ahead as well, wanting to make sure she kept an eye out for their blond friend, her eyes zeroing in on that unique ponytail when she saw it. “There she is,” Veronica said, letting out a small sigh of relief until she realized that not too far there was a massive horde heading Betty’s direction. She knew that Betty couldn’t see it because they were traveling uphill with the three of them being directly above them. “Archie.” Veronica pulled against the sleeve of Archie’s shirt and pointed, her eyes widening when she saw how many there were. A hundred? Maybe more? What were they all doing out here and so close to the prison? --- Betty still wasn't entirely sure what to make of Everett, Washington. It wasn't Riverdale. Wasn't home. Though, it seemed a bit... greener. Or maybe that was just the area around where she was. The moment that Archie had mentioned coming out to get her, she'd hide. Hiding was something that she was good at. She'd done it a lot in the past. When you're pretty much a detective, it happens. All she wanted was to get somewhere safe. Out of the open. She turns a bit seeing the vehicle but doesn't see the horde of zombies that far away. Why would she? All she needed to do was make it to her best friends, so they could get out of there. --- When the signal went off, Archie breathed a sigh of relief. And a second later, whatever problems with Ronnie were temporarily forgotten as they noticed the horde of zombies. “What the hell?” Archie hit the gas, trying to get to Betty before the horde did. As long as she was in the truck with them, they’d be okay, right? They had to be. Ronnie pointed out Betty and Archie was able to get to her just in time for Betty to run toward the truck and jump in beside Ronnie. When she got in, Archie took off. He turned the truck around and headed back toward the road before they managed to close in on them, nearly putting the truck on two wheels as he sped out of there. As much as Archie killed zombies for a job at the prison, he didn’t want to get into it with a hundred or so of them. There was no way they’d be able to survive that. He smiled as they got back on the road because to him, they had gotten away. “That was a close one,” he said, looking over at Betty. “You okay?” He asked. And just like that, whatever relief he felt was gone as the truck began to sputter. No, no, no. “Shit,” he cursed as the truck began to slow and come to a stop in the middle of the road. --- Veronica could feel how fast her heart was racing and it was mostly because everything was happening so fast. The moment that Betty got into the truck there was no time for happy reunion talk or hugs because Archie was shifting gears to get them the hell out of there. All Veronica wanted in that exhilarating moment was to tell Betty how glad she was to have her best friend back but even that had to wait. There was no time to fill in the blond, not when another problem was surfacing the moment the truck started to literally die on them. “What’s going on? Archie?” Veronica could see the panic in his eyes which then made her panic but Veronica was a survivor at this point. She wasn’t daddy’s little girl anymore and she had the power to prove that now. It wasn’t how Veronica wanted to tell Betty - this Betty didn’t even know what was going on and was probably no way prepared to find out that Veronica was a little bit different now. “Just try starting it,” Veronica said, his eyes closing a second letter as she started to focus all of her energy into her middle, doing what Bonnie had taught her. She was sitting which was good because it meant that she could concentrate. In the background she could hear Archie trying to start the truck to no avail. Behind them the horde had caught up and in seconds they were going to be surrounded - they were going to die here. She was sure that Betty was probably wondering what the hell was going on but Veronica couldn’t begin to explain. “Dabit vitam!” It might not have been necessary to shout the words but when Veronica felt the pull in her gut she spoke her spell clearly and willed what she wanted to happen just as the zombies came at them from all sides. --- The moment that the truck slowed, Betty got in and sat down beside her best friend. It didn't surprised her that Veronica and Archie were there together. Why would it? Veronica had been helping him a bit back home, after all. None of that surprised her. What did? The zombies. Was this some kind of Day of the Dead crap? That's what it had to be, right? Zombies weren't really. This couldn't be real. Not that she had any leg to stand on. They still hadn't figured out who the Gargoyle King was. It made her panic slightly, but she tries to calm down. She couldn't think about that at the moment. Betty hangs onto the truck when those words come out of V's mouth. "What the hell is going on, guys?" Forget whether she was alright or not. No, she wasn't. Not when her mom and a few others were brainwashed by the Farm. "And what did you just do, V?" --- “She just saved us,” Archie said. The truck was able to start and the zombies were thrown back. Archie didn’t wait for anything else to give him a sign to get the hell out of there. He hit the gas once again and they were off. He could practically feel the confusion coming from Betty right now. She had no idea what was even going on and had already had taste of what life was like here. It might have seemed bad, but Archie and Ronnie knew that it could get a lot worse in Everett. He figured that while he drove, he would let Ronnie explain it all. He just knew that he didn’t want to speak for his girlfriend when it came to like, what she was now. Which was a witch. It was crazy how that happened. But it wasn’t as crazy as Toni being a shifter. The prison wasn’t far away luckily and even one of the buildings were coming into view. “So, don’t freak out, but we live in a prison,” Archie said, looking over at Betty. “A lot of us do, it’s okay. It’s not like we’re prisoners or whatever.” As she could see. “Usually when people show up here, the majority of them end up in the prison. But there’s also apartment or cabins but that means you have to fend for yourself.” --- “A lot has changed,” Veronica said, trying not to sound so sad about it although right now their lives were really screwed up in a lot of ways. “Like I said, we’ve been here a while and our friends have come and gone. You were here before even though you don’t remember. This place pulls people from different points in time. It’s annoying, really. The whole forgetting thing but I guess it makes sense. The Betty that was here was a different Betty. Different point in time, I guess?” Veronica didn’t understand fully the whole time-space thing when it came to the whole arriving and disappearing bit. Veronica knew that she would have to tell the story of how she got into magic and it was probably something she would tell Betty later. She knew that Archie didn’t like it although they weren’t exactly on speaking terms she could tell that it was just something he didn’t want to listen to. “But you won’t,” she said quickly, not wanting for Betty to think that she could just live on her own out there. “The prison is safe. We’ve been there for a while and although there have been some...hiccups,” Veronica’s eyes lingered on Archie for a moment before she shook off the feeling, “everything else is fine. The people there are friendly and all we’re trying to do is survive.” --- Saved them. That much she could actively see. Veronica had done something and it had pushed the zombies back. Zombies... that was still blowing her mind. This was worse than the Gargoyle King or her... no, it wasn't worse than her dad. Nor was it worse than the Farm. "That's a bit of an understatement." A lot changing could've signified anything. The changing of someone's clothes or just weird crap in general. This right here? This just made her miss Jughead that much more. He'd probably have a bit more of a handle on this kind of thing. However, two of the most important people in her life were with her. "What kind of hiccups? You know what, don't tell me. Just tell me what needs to be done when we get there." --- Archie looked back in the rearview and for now, they were good. It wasn’t that much longer until the prison and he let the two girls talk. He knew with Betty here, that Ronnie might feel a little better. Or maybe that was Archie. It wasn’t like he was hoping they were all stuck here. Despite everything, he just wanted to go home. The last time he really saw his father was when he was shot at Pops. He had memories since then but it wasn’t the same. Neither was hearing it from anyone else. He wanted to see him himself. “When you get there, they’re going to check you in. You’ll get a room with a roommate, you’ll get a job and then at that point, you just live the best way you can. I’m sure Ronnie will fill you in,” he said as they reached the prison. Archie pulled inside and parked the jeep. He figured he’d talk to Betty later and ask her what was going on at home. How his dad and Jughead were. If anything changed or if things were still crazy there. He wanted to know everything, but for now, he figured the two girls could catch up. “Come on, we’ll show you where to go.” |
