Finn knew how on edge everyone was. You could cut the tension with a knife and Finn felt like if he closed his eyes he’d wake up to someone else gone. Honestly, the guy couldn’t handle anymore loss. It had started with Murphy, and then went down hill and now everything was just cutting too close to home. Never in a million years did he expect to become so close to O and Bell in the way that he had. Jasper was easy to get along with and keep close but Bell and Finn had always butted heads from the beginning. And then Finn had died and there was no changing much. Here it was all different and Finn planned to keep it that way. After they gathered everything they needed the boys headed out in the jeep they had managed to scavenge up and in no time they made it over to the next town. Finn was in the passenger seat and he kept his eyes on the road but Jasper’s question kept replaying over and over in his mind. Did he think Bellamy would snap? Maybe. There was only so much that one person could take, but Bell wasn’t alone. And that was why him and Jasper were with him now. “There should be a mall coming up soon.” He was looking at the map now. One he had made himself. Finn was constantly going out to mark the map and keep a tab on what was where just in case. “It should be one of the ones that are hardly touched. If we’re lucky some of the weapons in the gun shop will be there..” Bell kept his gaze on the road as he drove. “Stop fiddling with stuff,” he said softly to Jasper. The younger boy immediately stopped messing with the brain teaser puzzle. The rings of metal were silenced as he glanced towards Finn. This trip felt like it was going to either go fine or blow up horribly in their faces. “Sooo,” Jasper licked his lips as he set the metal puzzle down on the seat next to him. “Are we going to talk about Harry and Tink moving in? I mean Tink has been helping me with the greenhouse and we do have a lot of empty houses now.” “Do we trust them?” Bellamy took the turn into the parking lot of the mall. Cars were abandoned right and left. If they were lucky they could steal some gas out of some of those cars. The Jeep didn’t run on wishes. “I mean enough to have them move in with us.” He pulled up to the curb of the mall and killed the engine. Bell turned in his seat to fix both Finn and Jasper with a look. “We stick together in here. Don’t go wandering off because you saw something shiny.” “That was one time,” Jasper grumbled. It was moments like this he really felt the absence of Octavia. She would have told Bell to knock it off, but now she had a whole new life to deal with. A life he was trying not to bring up around Bellamy. He knew their leader was hurting, but he didn’t know how to make it any better. Bell was just going to have to figure shit out on his own with Octavia. Jasper rubbed the back of his head slightly as he glanced towards Finn. Finn would have been lying if he said that the trio of delinquents didn’t have trust issues and all for good reason. Finn had gone above and beyond to try and make things work with the grounders back home and that had gone to shit way too quickly, but here? It wasn’t the same and he understood that. Here they had to worry more about the supernatural psychopaths and the walking dead more than they had to worry about strangers. “I think if they were going to try and pull something they would have done it already.” Finn glanced at Jasper and gave him a small nod. Yeah, he knew what was going on inside the kid’s head because it was going on in his too. Everything was fucked up, how could it get any worse? He climbed out of the jeep and adjusted the assault rifle on his shoulder following Bellamy as he glanced around their surroundings. “Tink brings the light to the dark and Harry is...Harry. He’s not so bad. I think he’d plunge a sword into someone for us.” Or for fun in general. “The fairy can help Jasper with the food and fixing things up around the place and Harry can pull his weight at the docks to bring in food. They’ve lost a lot. Almost as much as we did.” Finn stepped past the broken glass as the three made their way inside. It was quiet but Finn still moved with caution. They had lost enough and they weren’t about to lose anymore. “We need to hit storage too. There’s gotta be some food we can round up.” Twinkies? Those things lasted forever. “That is one way to put it,” Bell said dryly. Harry was chaotic. One minute the pirate could be playing with Tink and the next he was violently slaughtering zombies. Unhinged was probably the best term, but he didn’t think the other boy was exactly insane. Damaged, like the rest of them, but there was something else going on as well. “Maybe we should rename ourselves,” Jasper piped up. “I mean since we’ve all lost so much? Like Lost Kids or something…” His words tapered off into nothing as Bell gave him a look. “I’ll allow them to move in, but I am not sure I want to be called a Lost Kid.” “Okay...but I just meant-” Bellamy brought a finger to his lips in the universal shush motion and the young chemist snapped his teeth shut. He gripped the strap of his own assault rifle and looked around with wide eyes. Had Bell heard something? The place sure seemed silent. “I don’t want to draw attention,” the leader finally said in a near whisper. “We don’t know if we are alone. We do this as quietly as possible and we move fast. We will table discussion of Lost Kids until later, understand?” Jasper nodded before reaching up to pull his goggles down over his eyes. Finn shrugged. He never said Harry was all there. In fact anyone who ever claimed that clearly didn't know the kid. The pixie sure seemed to trust him with her life though and Tinkerbell had a strong sense on people. Harry was Harry, they would all learn to live with his chaotic self. He shot Jasper a look and couldn’t help the smirk that formed on his face. “We’re not calling ourselves the Lost Kids.” Finn knew that Jasper was trying to lighten the situation a bit and he was grateful for that, but if that was the case? They might as well have just called him and Jasper the dead boys. He moved down the hall and headed towards the food court. Everything was trashed but there was a few things they could still put to use. Finn had plans to stop at the art supply store in the mall too. “I have another pit stop to make on the floor above us.” He eyed them for a second. “That girl Peyton I found at the train station. She asked for some paints and stuff.” He shrugged off their looks, “Don’t give me those looks. She’s just a friend.” And that’s all it would be. Or at least that was what Finn told himself. He had lost too much already and his heart was in a bad place. Bellamy kicked some discarded bags out of his way as they walked. There was no way to stay mad at Jasper, but there was no way in Hell they were going by Lost Kids. The thought did make his lips quirk slightly into a ghost of a smile. He glanced over his shoulder at Finn and raised an eyebrow in a knowing manner. Jasper was also giving Finn a look as well. A girl? Really? “I didn’t say a word,” he defended himself as he smiled. “So we going to have art to hang on the fridge thanks to Peyton?” Jasper let out a mild yelp when Bell socked him in the shoulder for that teasing. “Fine, we will stop for some gifts for your girl,” Bell couldn’t help smirking as he said those words. He was rewarded by Jasper’s laughter. The trip to the mall was helping distract him from the whole thing with Octavia. “I want to get O some books anyway.” “Hey, look,” Jasper pointed towards a drug store. “We should snag as many of those bottles of waters as possible. I am going to set up a water filtration system so we can use rain water, but until then…” “I hate you both.” Finn huffed as he walked shoving random items into the backpack he had hung over one shoulder. There was a hint of a smile that toyed at the corners of his lips but he was sure to hide it from the other boys. This is what they did. They talked shit so they wouldn’t have to deal with their issues and Finn was incredibly grateful for the both of them. All three of them needed this trip out even if they wouldn’t admit it outloud to each other. “I’ll gather the water jugs and put them by the door. What else is on the list.” He glanced over at Jasper, “We can stop by the herbal store and see what we can gather from there too.” “I was thinking of heading out for a few days. Go more towards where the old farms were. See if we can find some animals that made it out here. There’s got to be some.” They could use milk and meat. Something that wasn’t constantly snake, rabbit, and deer. Bell frowned for a moment. “We should see about getting some warmer clothes. Tink can only craft so many and the last thing we need is for anyone to catch ill.” He wasn’t saying it outloud, but he was pretty much accepting the fact the fairy and the pirate were moving into the gated community. “Oh, yeah. I mean the herbal store bit, not the warm clothes one,” Jasper quickly clarified. “I want to stock up on whatever I can find. Tink and I were experimenting with using her pixie dust to help grow plants, there are some other things I want to try and I don’t want to waste fresh produce.” A faint snort escaped Bellamy as he shook his head slightly. The boy could gush about his projects if no one stopped him. “Fine, but you take extra ammo with you and we will decide if someone should go with you.” Most likely Bell would head out with Finn. Jasper was better suited to his greenhouse and chemistry, plus someone would need to keep Harry and Tink company. “I’d say Harry should go with you, but I am pretty sure Tink will disapprove,” Bell mused. “Jackets, long sleeves, and heavier clothed pants.” Finn could live in jeans and his jacket from back home but there was only so many times that Tink could patch up his jacket before there was nothing really left to it. “Blankets too. We can stock up for when he need it. Heavier socks too.” Finn grinned over at Jasper. “We’ll get you all the herbs you need. Maybe you can start growing something more than just food.” He shot them both a look and shrugged. “What? We could all use a little stress reliever.” Plus, had anyone ever seen a fairy high? Who knows, it might mellow out the pirate too. Finn snorted softly at the thought. The pixie was way too possessive over the pirate. “Tink won’t let Harry go anywhere alone and I’m sure as hell not leaving Jasper home alone..” He left another jug near the door and glanced over at Bellamy. “You’ll come with me. Besides, if we find anything I want to see you chase it while we try to catch it.” He smirked as he moved up the broken escalator and searched out the art supply store. The other two knew damn well that Finn could hold his own so he wasn’t worried. “Look, there’s a bed bath & beyond, you want to pick out anything for Bonnie?” Finn smirked down at Bellamy from above them. “Oh, not funny?” Jasper got an amused look on his face, whereas Bell merely looked disapproving. “I won’t stop you two idiots,” he finally cracked a smile and the youngest member of the group relaxed slightly. Growing something for fun was a good idea. They would just have to make sure not to get high all at once. Someone had to stand watch. See, Jasper could be responsible at times. “Going to be awkward for Harry if he ever wants to hook up with someone,” Jasper joked and received a smack to the back of the head from Bell. “Hey!” He rubbed the back of his head as he glared at their fearless leader. “But, fine, yeah, Harry and Tink can babysit me while you two go on your trip.” Bell flipped Finn off without saying a word. Not funny. Bonnie and he hadn’t talked in awhile and now he was positive they wouldn’t anytime soon. Octavia was a vampire and his concern was her. Talking with Bonnie had always upset O, and well, he didn’t want to do anything to upset her right now. “Hurry it up, I don’t want to be here much longer.” |
