Who: Elena and Stefan
What: Discovering Damon's gone from the lighthouse
Where: The lighthouse and then out in the wilderness
Warnings: None

Elena and Stefan had put aside their plans to track down this Clint vampire and ask him for help, find out what he was really about. It had been at least a month since they'd gone to visit Damon and fed him. They couldn't go too long between feedings or else Damon was going to dessicate and that was something that Elena would never let happen to him. He had... gotten this way trying to save her and Stefan. She hated him for leaving her but she loved him for being a hero. It was a fine line to walk. She was only grateful that she could still communicate with him if she sat next to him. That link between them was unbreakable.

Or was it? Elena had been feeling a strange emptiness inside of her for the past twenty four hours and she wasn't entirely sure why. She just knew that it had something to do with Damon. She was afraid, afraid that he had finally died and that there was nothing she and Stefan could do about it. They had tried everything to wake Damon up, exhausted every option they could think of including the magical ones. But there was nothing. The dreamwalker had Damon right where she wanted him and he was going to spend eternity like this. Sleeping Beauty.

There were a few problems with this fairytale. First of all, since when did the princess fall in love with the prince's brother? That was just one of the complications. The other was that he had woken up and it hadn't been with the princess's kiss. Something else had done it. And that was the best case scenario, someone had woken Damon up. The worst case scenarios ranged somewhere between kidnapping and murder. She could see the dust on the bed right around where Damon had slept and the bare place where he had lain.

She finally lifted her eyes to look at Stefan's. "What could have done this? Do you think he's awake?" she asked him. If he was awake, he was probably disoriented and they needed a wake to track him. And Elena needed to figure out a way to explain a few things.

Stefan focused on anything but her face, at least for the moment. Her hands were on his cheeks and his hands came up, covering hers, holding them before pushing them away softly. He was worried about Damon, his main concern was Damon, but as they walked closer and closer to where he could be, it was tugging at him. The thoughts that were going through his mind, he wondered if Elena was thinking about it to. About them. Stefan wasn't jaded, he knew that he got Elena back because of the dream walker. He knew that if Damon survived, this, their great love would have never happened. They had stuck by eachother through everything since Damon was gone, maybe it was comfort, maybe it was out of some type of duty, maybe they just owed eachother that but none of those reasons seemed justifiable.

He loved Elena. He loved Elena. He never stopped. It was always her and while he spent a great deal with Faith, fought for her, stayed by her side, loved her, cared for her, was loyal to her and her decisions, it never meant he stopped for Elena. He knew they had all the time in the world, he just didn't know it would be this soon, he didn't know it would be because of Damon's misfortune.

His eyes tore away from her and he looked away, his hands on his hips, defeated by his own reasoning, he shook his head.

"I know. I know," was all he said. "I'm sorry, I just ... I mean, we really don't know what happened to him. We don't know who he's with. We sense Lucy, but do we really know that? It's just false hope, I don't know." With a sigh, he turned, looking back at the lighthouse, it was still in somewhat of a view.

"I just can't lose him again," Stefan confessed, biting his cheek, willing whatever emotion that was about to hit him to not. "Let's go," he said, turning his back on Elena and heading again back toward whatever hunch they were getting pulled into.

She hated feeling all of that emotion pouring out from him. She could sense it now that she was a vampire than she had ever been able to as a human. There were so many mixed up feelings in there and Elena had no idea how to make it better. And the desire to make it better was nearly killing her. She was bursting with it.

"It's not false hope, Stefan. Damon is up, he's awake. You're getting your brother back." And that was the most important thing. There was one thing Elena had figured out a long time ago. The Salvatore brothers might have loved Katherine once and they might love Elena now but they would always love each other most. Elena never wanted to stand in the way of that. She hoped she could find a way to make Damon understand the way things were right now. She knew she was going to hurt him either way. So long as the brothers got to reunite, things would be okay.

"We can keep tracking them but I'll bet you anything we end up at one of the farms in Everett. Which means we need to find them before Alec does." Alec was very dangerous. Not just because he was Rebekah's right hand man but because he was a genetically enhanced vampire. Which gave him an edge over all of the other vampires and definitely an edge over his daughter who was mostly human and just part transgenic.

"We should pick up the pace if we want to find them. If they're with Lucy they're not moving as fast as we can and I'm betting they're on Lucy's sleep schedule. She's human." Which meant she slept at night and was up during the day. Would they reach Everett by night fall? Elena had no idea. But she raced ahead of Stefan and stopped only long enough for him to catch up before letting him take the lead and set the pace.
