Who: Elena and Stefan
What: Discovering Damon's gone from the lighthouse
Where: The lighthouse and then out in the wilderness
Warnings: None

Elena and Stefan had put aside their plans to track down this Clint vampire and ask him for help, find out what he was really about. It had been at least a month since they'd gone to visit Damon and fed him. They couldn't go too long between feedings or else Damon was going to dessicate and that was something that Elena would never let happen to him. He had... gotten this way trying to save her and Stefan. She hated him for leaving her but she loved him for being a hero. It was a fine line to walk. She was only grateful that she could still communicate with him if she sat next to him. That link between them was unbreakable.

Or was it? Elena had been feeling a strange emptiness inside of her for the past twenty four hours and she wasn't entirely sure why. She just knew that it had something to do with Damon. She was afraid, afraid that he had finally died and that there was nothing she and Stefan could do about it. They had tried everything to wake Damon up, exhausted every option they could think of including the magical ones. But there was nothing. The dreamwalker had Damon right where she wanted him and he was going to spend eternity like this. Sleeping Beauty.

There were a few problems with this fairytale. First of all, since when did the princess fall in love with the prince's brother? That was just one of the complications. The other was that he had woken up and it hadn't been with the princess's kiss. Something else had done it. And that was the best case scenario, someone had woken Damon up. The worst case scenarios ranged somewhere between kidnapping and murder. She could see the dust on the bed right around where Damon had slept and the bare place where he had lain.

She finally lifted her eyes to look at Stefan's. "What could have done this? Do you think he's awake?" she asked him. If he was awake, he was probably disoriented and they needed a wake to track him. And Elena needed to figure out a way to explain a few things.

"That has to be it," Elena said quickly. It was the only explanation. Somehow Lucy had figured out a way to wake up Damon. Which meant he wasn't scared and alone, maybe just annoyed and confused. But Lucy would have lead him back to camp to find him and Elena. She had to have. She knew the history even if she had been a child when Damon had first fallen victim to the dreamwalker. It was strange. Elena had watched Lucy grow up but the younger girl was the same age now that Elena had been when she'd become a vampire.

"Let's track them' she suggested. Just in case they had gotten into any trouble or had accidentally gotten lost. She thought if anything had happened, it would be the first one. Lucy would know how to get home. By why was she here at the lighthouse anyway? She knew the other girl was going through a hard time now that The McCalls had been taken to one of the human camps. Elena had every intention of breaking them out but she knew it was dangerous when they were so obviously bait. Not for Elena and Stefan, although Elena suspected that Rebekah would like to get her hands on them. The bait had been for Lucy.

Which meant that Elena and Stefan had two people to help. They had been too caught up in their own lives to notice what was happening. Lucy was going after them alone.

"I know where they went," Elena said, stopping suddenly. She turned around and looked up at Stefan. "She's going to save Scott and Allison. Doesn't that sound exactly like the kind of suicide mission that Damon would want in on?"

She had missed his impulsiveness, even if she wouldn't admit it outloud. She just had to come up with a way to explain her and Stefan to him. Despite her best of intentions, she loved both Salvatore brothers and always would. But she couldn't have them both and she knew it. She wasn't Katherine, she wouldn't try to be. Stefan had been there for her but what was more, Elena had never fallen out of love with the younger Salvatore brother. She had loved Damon and still did but it was different.

"Fuck," Stefan cursed in a whisper, low and almost growly. It was just like Damon. Wake up from years upon years of sleep only to throw himself in a fight. A fight that should have already happened. Stefan was never really close to Allison and Scott until they started taking over parental duties with Lucy. It just seemed better that way and the day that Faith died, Stefan went on his own for what seemed like forever before he returned. It was a loss and it was a loss he felt often, if not every day. But he was happy now with Elena. Things were somewhat back to normal with the exception of Damon not being around, but if he were around, that meant that Stefan wouldn't have Elena.

There was nothing that was going to stop him from seeing his brother, so he just shrugged, moving to walk again. "Then I guess we're going," Stefan said.

He felt Elena's small hand in his and he held onto it as they walked. "It would be like him to do this. I just wished it was him trying to find us," he said and Elena went to interject and Stefan nodded, "I know, we don't know what really happened until we find out."

"Better that he's with her than she go alone," Elena pointed out. Sure, it wasn't ideal that Damon had run right off to help a girl with her suicide mission straight after waking up but it was better than Lucy going to her own suicide mission alone. The reason why Damon would go with her was part of the reason Elena loved him. Stefan would have done the same thing too and she knew it.

But she knew at the moment it was hard to see past the pain. Stefan wanted his brother with him now. Wanted to see with his own two eyes that Damon was safe and alive. Elena understood that because it was all she wanted to. So she slipped her hand into his and gave him hand a gentle squeeze. She wanted him to remember that she was there for him. And even though Damon waking up was a good thing, it was also a complicated thing but it wasn't going to change things between them. If she could think of a diplomatic way to say that to Stefan she would.

"They can't have gone too far. How long was it the last time we were here?" she asked him. And how long had it been since she had seen Lucy at camp? Not that long ago. Scott and Allison's disappearance had been recent. The entire camp had been rocked by it. Elena should have been paying more attention to Lucy but it was hard when you were busy trying to save captive humans from the farms in Everett.

And as far as the last time they had seen Damon, it was hard to say. Maybe a month? Maybe just a few weeks? It was hard to keep track of days here.

"I don't know Elena," was all Stefan said as he walked. To where? Back to camp, to Rebekah, he was torn between where to go. He'd like to think that his brother would have insisted on going back to camp, going to see him and Elena, but there was that part of him that would throw himself back into the fight, at whatever costs. Stefan turned slightly, heading west, pulling Elena along - holding onto her for dear life.

Everything that Stefan had been pushing aside for years felt as though it was rushing back to him and he tried his best to keep it all in check, but his voice, the urgency, the frustration, the fear .. it was all there in the way he spoke to Elena. He knew the last time they'd been to see Damon. He always knew, but the thought of him being alive wasn't helping him think clearly.

Mainly because if Damon was with Lucy, and they were going to try to get Scott and Allison back, that meant there was a possibility that Stefan could lose him this time.

For good.

Elena tugged on Stefan's hand and pulled him to a stop. She'd had many years to adjust to being a vampire now and found herself growing stronger every day. Maybe even stronger than Stefan, despite his age his animal diet made him weaker than your average vampire but Elena could only drink from the vein, human blood.

She took his face in her hands and looked up at him imploringly. She could see the haunted horror in those dark eyes, the worry. She wished she could just kiss him and he could wake up in a world that was better somehow. But she couldn't fix everything and daylight, true daylight wouldn't be coming any time soon. Not until Klaus and Rebekah were stopped for good.

"We're going to find him, Stefan," she said seriously. "I promise you, we'll find him."

Despite their own petty dramas and personal relationships, the three of them loved each other in one way or another. And a reunion was long overdue. Elena knew that Stefan wouldn't be able to think clearly, wouldn't be able to breathe until he saw his brother again. And so she was determined to find him.

Stefan focused on anything but her face, at least for the moment. Her hands were on his cheeks and his hands came up, covering hers, holding them before pushing them away softly. He was worried about Damon, his main concern was Damon, but as they walked closer and closer to where he could be, it was tugging at him. The thoughts that were going through his mind, he wondered if Elena was thinking about it to. About them. Stefan wasn't jaded, he knew that he got Elena back because of the dream walker. He knew that if Damon survived, this, their great love would have never happened. They had stuck by eachother through everything since Damon was gone, maybe it was comfort, maybe it was out of some type of duty, maybe they just owed eachother that but none of those reasons seemed justifiable.

He loved Elena. He loved Elena. He never stopped. It was always her and while he spent a great deal with Faith, fought for her, stayed by her side, loved her, cared for her, was loyal to her and her decisions, it never meant he stopped for Elena. He knew they had all the time in the world, he just didn't know it would be this soon, he didn't know it would be because of Damon's misfortune.

His eyes tore away from her and he looked away, his hands on his hips, defeated by his own reasoning, he shook his head.

"I know. I know," was all he said. "I'm sorry, I just ... I mean, we really don't know what happened to him. We don't know who he's with. We sense Lucy, but do we really know that? It's just false hope, I don't know." With a sigh, he turned, looking back at the lighthouse, it was still in somewhat of a view.

"I just can't lose him again," Stefan confessed, biting his cheek, willing whatever emotion that was about to hit him to not. "Let's go," he said, turning his back on Elena and heading again back toward whatever hunch they were getting pulled into.

She hated feeling all of that emotion pouring out from him. She could sense it now that she was a vampire than she had ever been able to as a human. There were so many mixed up feelings in there and Elena had no idea how to make it better. And the desire to make it better was nearly killing her. She was bursting with it.

"It's not false hope, Stefan. Damon is up, he's awake. You're getting your brother back." And that was the most important thing. There was one thing Elena had figured out a long time ago. The Salvatore brothers might have loved Katherine once and they might love Elena now but they would always love each other most. Elena never wanted to stand in the way of that. She hoped she could find a way to make Damon understand the way things were right now. She knew she was going to hurt him either way. So long as the brothers got to reunite, things would be okay.

"We can keep tracking them but I'll bet you anything we end up at one of the farms in Everett. Which means we need to find them before Alec does." Alec was very dangerous. Not just because he was Rebekah's right hand man but because he was a genetically enhanced vampire. Which gave him an edge over all of the other vampires and definitely an edge over his daughter who was mostly human and just part transgenic.

"We should pick up the pace if we want to find them. If they're with Lucy they're not moving as fast as we can and I'm betting they're on Lucy's sleep schedule. She's human." Which meant she slept at night and was up during the day. Would they reach Everett by night fall? Elena had no idea. But she raced ahead of Stefan and stopped only long enough for him to catch up before letting him take the lead and set the pace.
