The smell was familiar, but it had been so long since he ... he couldn't recognize it. Not yet and the more they walked, the more he was losing it. He searched on the trail they were on, both of them moving faster to get to a destination that they had no clue of and then it hit him suddenly. "Lucy," he said, confused, looking over at Elena and she stopped walking.
"It's Lucy. Lucy was there." But if Lucy was there, that meant that Damon ... was alive? Damon knew Lucy, all three of them knew Lucy. Stefan was with her mother, Faith for years. By her side. Stuck by her, loved her and then she became pregnant. It was obvious it wasn't Stefan's, he couldn't ... but he was still by her side through all of it and once she had Lucy, Alec killed Faith. It was a painful memory, something he didn't want to talk about and wouldn't. Ever. But he knew the scent. He knew all too well and Elena's eyes matched Stefan's. She knew it too.
He didn't want to say aloud that Damon could be okay, that maybe she was there with him when he awoke, or maybe Lucy was able to do something to make him wake up, but how?
"Maybe we crossed paths somehow, maybe he's heading to where we are, back to camp. Lucy knows where we are, but ..." He sighed, rubbing the back of his head, then shaking it in defeat.
