Jim wasn't sure if he should cop to knowing some Spanish; with French, Latin, and Italian under his belt he didn't have much trouble with other Romance languages, but reading something on paper was a lot easier than listening. Regardless, it seemed equally rude to announce it, so he decided to let it slide and pretend he hadn't heard anything that wasn't his business. He had a lot of practice with that, anyway.
"I was definitely kidding about weather machines, sorry," he said. "The whole situation is so awful and ridiculous that my imagination just went to a supervillain place. Kidnapping, extra kidnapping, electric shock wall, mass punishment, parties with no music. And yeah, that's a perfect application of Occam's Razor. It's counter-intuitive that a maxim about simplicity is difficult to implement, but it actually is. A lot of people misuse the concept to make it function as an arbiter instead of as an heuristic to help evaluate competing models of—I'm doing it again, sorry," he interrupted himself. "If any of us still had money I'd start something like a swear jar. The 'Jim's talking too much jar.'"
