Okay, obviously he was surprised by her age, but that didn't surprise her. She didn't know what the big deal was about that, though, as the line between minor and adult was very clearly and strictly defined back home. While she didn't understand the reasons for it, it was a way to keep the commune safe and functioning, adhering to Oregon state laws.
"Hmm, I think it's unfortunate to wake up here no matter your age." Madison had made similar comments, though, about how much worse it was for her. "I've been here three days. I'm Willow, and I'm really sorry you've joined us here." Because that meant he'd been torn away from his family and life and she wouldn't wish that on anyone.
