She was trying to be funny. Chase recognized and even appreciated the fact that she seemed to be trying to be nice on some level, but his brain was too busy computing the fact that between the young woman, and the older man on the computer, there were probably quite a few people in the house who hadn't gotten off as lucky as he had attire-wise. Would a more polite person offer her his shoes? There was no way he was doing that, but how did she expect to get all the way into town dressed the way she was?
The name clicked in his head by the time he realized he hadn't actually replied to anything she'd said yet, and he slightly loosened the grip he'd been holding on the stick. "You were the one looking for medicine. Asking about the hospital." It was a statement rather than a question. His mouth moved a few times without any words leaving his lips, and he cleared his throat, turning down the road as if that were any indicator of what was ahead, even if the town couldn't be seen from here.
"It's pretty far down. Some of the buildings are....uh..." He glanced back, shifting on his feet before aiming his gaze at hers. "You could wrap them maybe. Not as good as shoes, but it'd be better. Probably."
