Jack hadn't really noticed Kai had left until he looked up and she was gone. He could hear the faint sounds of the others in the halls, or wandering around to explore, but still managed to feel impossibly alone. Bosley had finally slipped out from under the bed to sniff at the remains of the table, then plopped down on his rearend next to Jack, lightly leaning on him and panting.
"I'm sorry, buddy...." Jack murmured, reaching down to pet him with one hand, his other wiping at his face as new tears appeared. He felt like an idiot, hope draining into anguish so fast it had exhausted him. And he'd scared his own fucking dog. "I'm a shitty dad," he added, and though he'd been aiming it at the dog it just managed to make him feel terrible all over again.
He looked up when Kai returned, trying to focus his gaze on what she'd brought with her. "What's in the bag?"
