Oliver wanted to say that it would be fine if they didn't get around to getting the bonsai set up yet. After all, it had been fine in the box so far, hadn't it? But just that thought made him feel bad. Who knew how long the plant had been in there, in the dark and confined. A little sun would make it feel better, as better as a plant was capable of, and it would make him feel better to know he'd given it that much. He tried not to wonder if Rachel had been the one to take care of it after he'd disappeared, or if something They'd already had it. He didn't like considering the circumstances surrounding either option, so he did his best to leave it as it was.
One more kiss, this time in a silent thank you he hoped would be relayed until he could say it properly, and he headed for the stairs. Edwin's room was further away, but it felt safer somehow, like the more distance they put between the crowd and their precious cargo, the better. After situating the box to lean against his chest, propped up on one hand, he opened Edwin's door like it was his own, holding it so Edwin could pass through. The relative quiet helped to calm his nerves, and he couldn't keep from glancing into the box once more, as if to make sure the bonsai was still there. As if he couldn't tell with the scent lingering almost directly under his nose.
Home, his brain connected, now that the smell was warring less with that of the Christmas tree and other lingering smells from the group dinner. Then, weirdly, his brain went in an entirely different direction, wondering if he could build a small table for Edwin's room rather than pilfering one from someone else. He brightened slightly at that, then realized that during his mulling he hadn't moved from the hallway, and had just been staring into the box. He cleared his throat and stepped inside, nudging the door carefully closed behind him. It was going to be a short trip, he knew, but better secure than sorry. "You know, I could just empty this box out and turn it upside down near the window for now so we don't have to worry about movin' the desk around. I don't think the little guy's gonna fuss to hard about that."
